Am I the only one who thinks controller vibration takes me out of immersion, I don't want to be constantly reminded that I am sitting in a room playing a game.

You're right I forgot it should also be wired.

I'd rather not have those features if the controller dies in 4 hours. It's insane how handhelds like the PSP and Vita can have better battery life than modern controllers, especially when they're actually running the games.

I miss the PS3 days when you didn't have to plug the DS3 in for a week. It's been downhill since then imo.

🤨 uhm, no... not really. it wasn't distracting like in some shooters, but also not noteworthy.

the way that I know it wasn't noteworthy is that I don't even remember how the triggers felt during combat, while I know I didn't turn the effect off.

a good implementation is something that has some actual utility, like the different fire modes in Ratchet and Returnal, or that one climbing section in Astro's Playroom where you have to feel the limit of how far you can press as to not crack the rock you hold on to

Sebile was leaked via the court files and presumably cancelled somewhere down the road. I don’t see the news here like at all. Maybe it’s leftovers of an old code.

I think you’re undervaluing the implementation in Forbidden West. Each weapon had a distinct trigger feel, relaxing the string has a similar feedback in me triggers.

Vibrations were very similar to what you had in the sand/ice levels in Astro.

Keep the Xbox triggers, I think they are comfortable. I don't like the PS5 triggers, not beefy enough for extended trigger playing time.
Add the PS5 rumble, maybe the touch screen.
Rechargeable like the elite series 2, it's got a good battery life but It could always be made to last longer.
All the other features like, force triggers, speaker and motion controls can be added if you want but I'm just going to turn them off.

Oh and while I'm dreaming, add controls/switches to allow for multiple devices on one controller please. That should have been a thing over a decade ago.
And for the love of God do something about the analog controls wearing out so soon. TMR Hall effect? or whatever new tech is available.

a different feel is a nice gimmick. but there's room for actual game mechanics there that is severely underutilized. no game that released after the initial launch period actually uses the triggers in interesting ways.

even from one game to its direct sequel this is true.
Astro's Playroom had that climbing mechanic I mentioned before, where you had to be careful not to break the rock. Astro Bot however didn't have anything similar, and in fact removed this mechanic from the few climbing spots it had.

I feel like developers are afraid to actually use the triggers in interesting ways. for third party multiplatform games that's understandable... but not even exclusives do it anymore.

I wonder if Kojima will do something with them in Death Stranding 2. if someone will do it it's him. although, now with the IP belonging to his studio again, and the probably multiplatform release within 24 months... maybe not just to be save for Keyboard and Xbox controller compatibility

I don't get the people complaining. How is this bad for anyone or are we just shitting on Xbox just to shit on Xbox?

Getting the Xbox controller up to modern standards (modern haptics/gyro/etc) has no downsides.

And I’ll still turn off the trigger effects in every MP game.
100%

Multiplayer I turn off triggers and haptics.
Singleplayer I basically always leave haptics on, but I'm probably 50/50 on the triggers. R&C did the triggers really well but it doesn't feel great in some games.

The haptics and triggers are nothing compared to the worst gimmick PlayStation controllers have given us which is the fucking touchpad. What could have been cool has basically just turned into a giant Select button and I can't really think of any game past 2015 that uses it any other way at least off the top of my head. Worst part? We are stuck with it for as long as we have BC for PS4 so unless Sony drop PS4 support for the PS6 or beyond we are stuck with the big dumb button forever.

Returnal and Ratchet are the only 2 games with well implemented trigger effects. (and Astro's Playroom, but that's not a full game and actually there as a controller demo)

everything else is just awful. Spider-Man just makes them feel spongy for wherever reason... like who came up with that shit? and every shooter just adds some annoying rattle effect when you pull the trigger, which often doesn't work correctly as it doesn't always reset properly if you tap too fast.

this is sadly the fate of most controller features. there will be the launch titles that actually show them off, and then you'll get maybe 1 or 2 games after that initial launch period where they are used in ok-ish ways.
There are several other games where it is brilliantly implemented. Gt 7 for example, both haptics and the adaptive triggers together tell you massive amounts of info that is crucial in order to go fast. The difference in laptimes with having them on or off is massive. Having haptic feedback and adaptive triggers actually bridges the gap between the controller and the racing wheel.

Sixaxis on PS3, the touchpad on PS4, Xbox Impulse triggers, HD rumble. the Wii U gamepad Screen being off the worst of all of them, as Nintendo themselves didn't even bother using it in Breath of the Wild 😬 literally just giving you a black screen... that's insane, especially after Wind Waker HD used it so well that the gamepad addition alone made the game way more enjoyable than the original, even if we ignore all the other gameplay improvements. on-the-fly item switching, ocean map on screen at all times... it was so well implemented... and then to just have a black screen in BOTW was truly shocking
Yeah it is upto the devs on if and how they implement it. Luckily a lot of devs do add atleast basic implementation of haptics and adaptive triggers. Does add a lot in terms of immersion and feel, imo.

Dumb question.

How does someone assume new controllers are coming based on that image of code words? Is there past data that shows similar code data means new gamepads?

Feels great in CP2077 to me. Even saw they created a mod for the pc version.
I have no idea what he is talking about. Most third party games have decent to great dualsense implementation. I just recently played Borderlands 3 and MH Rise on the PS5, both have great haptics and trigger implementation. In MH Rise, using the Heavy Bowgun and pulling the trigger for Wyvernheart makes you feel like a badass as the haptics and the adaptive triggers combine to give the feel of firing a real heavy machine gun.

Then, there are those complaining about the light 'bar' (another poster used this term though it makes no sense for a dualsense controller) reflecting off the TV. The light strip on the dualsense is so subtle that it is difficult to notice when immersed in a game. Since, most of the light is emitted from the top surface around the touchpad, I have no idea how it is reflecting off the TV screen. BL3 has this feature, wherein depending on the element of the gun used, the light bar colour changes (blue for electric, green for corrosive, yellow for radiation, etc), and it is hard to notice due to how subtle the light strip is, especially in a well-lit room. It probably works well on the DS4 that actually has a light bar which can reflect off the TV and other surfaces.

This is my biggest problem with the DS and DS4. That dumb touchpad, I have no idea who came up with it. Since the portal and steam deck do not have the touch pad, you have to map that idiotic input to one of the rear paddles/touch screen. They should have just had start/select and one extra button for screenshots like the switch. As you said, this button will always be included in future iterations due to BC as some games actually used swipes for performing some actions. I suspect the touch pad and the high polling rate are the main culprits behind the DS' mediocre battery life as the rest of the features are standard in all gamepads (it doesn't take much to light an LED and the haptics are more efficient than the previous gen motors).

Speaking of pointless gimmicks, can't wait to add the switch 2 mouse to that list. It might be the best thing since sliced bread, but I am not sacrificing my comfort by laying the controller on the table and dragging it across the table, while looking at the screen with the left joycon in hand. It will be as bad as the Legion Go and used as much as the IR sensor in the current switch.

It's a nice feature for inducing foreplay, though. Worked 2 times I had a girl over.

Whatever people think about Microsoft, this is great news. It means we will finally get a controller that has all the Edge bells and whistles but actually natively supports the PC.
The Dualsense Edge is the best controller on the market, and the Elite 2... is not. Microsoft playing catch up in this area in 2025 is indicative of Microsoft overall.
Not even close. I love my Edge, hell I have 3 of them, but for every positive there is a negative that keeps the Elite being better. The battery life is abysmal for one, I can use my Elite 2 for a month on a single charge, my Edge needs to be charged every session, and often times I'll have to swap them out while playing. They also suck ass on PC because Sony can't bother to support them, so you either have to use them wired or you get none of the benefits.
People with symmetrical hands won the console war. Get over it, mutant.
The console war is for losers. More people use asymmetrical controllers than symmetrical overall and it's not even close.

Microsoft is 5-10 years late to the party. If I'm not mistaken, wasnt the big new feature of this generations new Xbox controller a share button?

Bored The Office GIF
Imagine being Sony, having a 5 year head start and Microsoft takes your lunch money because you refused to support the biggest platform in gaming. Microsoft will be late to the party and still make a killing because Sony refuses to make the controllers 100% PC compatible.

I would rather they come up with something new and it is not a gimmick. During my PS5 time I had most of the features off, because I just found them more distracting than anything. Gyro would be nice though for certain games that could utilise it well.

Just make a controller that feels sturdy and sits well in my hands, like Elite 2 does. Dualsense feels like cheap plastic comparably.

I will immediately turn off haptic, rumble, whatever - its all useless shit.
I am hoping they can correct the ultra clicky dpad.
The sticks, triggers, bumpers, buttons - all already perfect.

Xbox is still the best controller on the market by miles - and is the reason I buy multiplats on Xbox and PC over all others.

Since xbox controller will be like duelsense. Makes me wonder how far sony can go with there controllers can only do so much to them.. makes me wonder if there gonna have lcd screens next that u can customization on the go or like a map for fps games and shows u the end results while the main screen loads to the next

More interested to see what they do with the haptics that makes their controller different from the PS5.

I do like the adaptive triggers on certain games, and if more controllers could adopt that maybe we'd get a new standard.

Just want the battery life to be good, because that's what I want the PS6 controller to improve on.
