Liam Robertson on what happened with MvC:I

I've never said this about any other game before, but seeing how little resources Capcom was willing to give for such a big name title, at least as far as the fighting game genre is concerned, this game deserved to bomb hard. I feel bad for the people who worked on this game and wanted to make something better, but weren't given the opportunity by the higher ups.

Yep, not surprising at all
Pulled the same shit with SFxT
Budgets, how do they work?

Criticizing Capcom for lowballing the budget on the main game is very much deserved. The quality difference between the returnee models vs the newbies is night and day.

Criticizing them for offering up additional DLC characters to buy (something that players actively want!) is not.

- Shoestring budget. Like half of the budget for SFV's DLC plans.

If true this is actually kind of impressive. The game doesn't look great, at all, but there's a lot of stages, lots of long (if mostly bad) cutscenes, a fairly large cast, the online features are pretty solid, there's an arcade mode (!), there's a couple boss characters. The game definitely feels cheap, but it doesn't feel that cheap.

Man, what an embarrassment, fuck off Capcom. I was kinda tempted to get this despite how shitty it looks because I adore Capcom IPs, especially Mega Man, but nah, I'll wait till they decide to improve presentation if that ever happens... DBF looks incredible too, so that will fill the void.

Whar confuses me if how they pull off this nonsense with Marvel being involved, like... How does Marvel not do anything? I'm kinda impressed they even allow themselves to be tied to a product like this.

They screwed this one up for me personally, no buy. This game screams low budget/rushed product. A shame, given Marvels intentions for gaming and the mass appeal of the Avengers.

They reused old assets? What old version of Chun and Dante did these old models before they got changed come from then?

I believe the low budget 100% though

I can sympathize with a shoestring budget, but when you're withholding content for DLC and therefore not putting your best foot forward a bomba is well deserved.

I remember him being fairly on the money about Mass Effect Andromeda, but IIRC he also said that Bioware intentionally designed the female character models be less attractive for purposes of feminism, which was ridiculous (and assumed way too much of Bioware's competence regarding character models).

Who is this guy? He's just making stuff up. None of the character models were lifted from another game.

They used the framework of the models from MvC3 and reskinned them accordingly to adhere to the change in art style. And some of them (Cap/Hawkeye) got fuckin' mangled in the process.

How much DLC are they committed to delivering for the season pass? I wonder if they just write off the loss and stop the dlc.

I don't understand new capcom. I loved old capcom

how could they not realize going low budget and cutting corners on a game, especially considering their past standards, would affect the sales and reception of the game? if you want people to buy your shit, make it as good as you can, and put in the investment it deserves to be done well. MVCI reeks of half-assedness, and is nothing I want to support as a consumer, despite being a huge MVC fan. If they wanted to spend less on it, then reduce scope, and do a smaller amount in better quality.

But knowing new capcom, they will likely write this off as fans not wanting more mvc. To be fair, they'd be right, if it's another low effort toss out

sigh :(

That's what fanboys/girls do. You notice people trying to say graphics or art style don't matter now when it comes to MvCI.

One of my friends is big into the MvC FGC and posted exactly this today. His post boiled down to "If you want a different roster then wait until they add him or her, if you want visuals go play DB FighterZ, and if you want X-Men tough 'cuz there's already enough interesting characters. Stop complaining, we don't want you in our community, you would've dropped the game two weeks after launch anyway."

That is how an iceberg shrinks.

But Ryce said the opposite about the budget.

Hmm.

Wow. How the hell can Capcom fucked up so badly like this?

Because their management follows a completely insane business model of simultaneously reducing production value of their products (in highly visible ways) while expecting higher returns, in a genre where their competition is growing.

I honestly feel nothing but empathy for their teams who have to suffer under this complete bullshit.

What else is Capcom spending money on exactly?

Hmm.

Oh shit, what if Capcom is pulling a Gearbox/Pitchford and using Disney's MvC:I money mostly on MHW?!

What did he say about the switch?

One thing was a comprehensive insider thing he leaked that involved the ability to use a browser and video calling, 4K streaming, and a max tv output of 900p for video games.

Obviously none of that happened. Non-Switch insider stuff is Liam's skillset.

Pretty impressive for a low budget title the stages look really good, gameplay is good, full story, some of the characters look good and pretty amazing that Capcom gives SFV such a high budget for DLC going off its initial sales.

yeah i knew something was up after i saw the trailer. Im glad that i didnt pick this up, i dont want to support a company that doesnt care.

the only reason i can imagine they sunk this low is because they fucking know it's going to sell (and be relevant) because of the FGC.

If Arc System Works doesn't come out the gate and completely blow them away in sales, and also steal a good portion of the FGC attention with its FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR superior work ethic, then nothing will ever stop Capcom from doing this

Dragon Ball Fighter Z, Tomoko...you're our last hope.

Are you talking about the SFxT DLC? Because those were 100% cut and sold back.
Screwing up by putting the DLC on the day 1 disc (necessary for playing vs players who've purchased the DLC) does not mean that those characters were originally budgeted and developed with the expectation of being on the base roster!

Lol I knew monster hunter and black panther were finished, makes sense considering they show up in story mode.

Capcom went as low budget as possible so they could try and profit off it.

Yep, that's everything we feared, check check and check

The tournaments will be hype
once people move on from Reality Stone
but whew lad, this one's gonna be a hard pass for me

Capcom is so depressing anymore. I’m not sure what else to even say. I keep hoping they somehow turn the ship around, but I know it’s a long shot :(

Edit: maybe it would be best if they merged with another company if the issue is resources/budgets, which it honestly seems to be considering their low output, needing Sony to help fund SFV, and the low budget of MvC:I (if true).

Well that all plays a role in why it's scummy. All the other fighters got dlc, I'm mainly giving Capcom shit in this instance because of their low-budget nature.

MvC:I is the first game this generation that I bought digitally and desperately want a refund for. I haven’t worked up the desire to touch it since finishing the campaign and I really bothering with it.

Meanwhile, I’ve had plenty of time on Injustice 2 since.
