[Taul Passi] What Happened With PS5 Exclusives This Generation?

Any list with games like Pokemon Arceus on it immediately become a joke...

If Sony had either of these companies' production they would got torched...
Pokemon Arceus is rated an 84, which is as much as Ghost of Tsushima, and higher than Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin, both part of your lists

If you are unable to separate your personal opinion from objective fact, then yes, of course, no other company has managed to put out a lineup of games that you enjoy as much as your favorite company. No shit.

Bitter critters. The narrative early on the generation was that Sony was focusing way too much on AAA action-adventures, and now that the likes of Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, Astro Bot and Fighting Souls started gaining traction, people want those AAA action-adventures back (not that they went away, but fuck me if DS2 isn't considered first-party now, when Sony has repeatedly called it 'first-party').
I was never on that wave, and always said people who were were salty af and lying through their teeth. That Sony Template shit always pissed me off.

Nobody was or ever will buy consoles for peewee software. Give me expensive AAA games with high production values, or I'm out of the medium.

I think TLOU being hailed as the greatest game ever (way overrated IMO) broke gaming journalists (and many gamers) brains.

Too much "prestige" handed to it, and they'll never top that amount of fart huffing praise (for a game I never hear anyone actually talk about the gameplay of, which is pretty good to terrible *cough stealth cough*.

They've point out plenty of "quality" games this gen.

What happened to Xbox console exclusives this generation?

Can anyone name a company that has produced more quality titles in the last 5 years than Sony?

Since June 2020

Last of Us Part 2
Ghost of Tsushima
Spider-Man Miles Morales
Demon's Souls
Returnal
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart
Gran Turismo 7
Horizon Forbidden West
God of War Ragnarok
Spider-Man 2
Stellar Blade
Rise of the Ronin
Helldivers 2
Astro Bot

Upcoming titles
Death Stranding 2
Ghost of Yotei
Saros
Intergalactic
Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls

It's laughable that people give this company so much shit while they produce way more games of note than anyone else.

Some choice excerpts

Quite right

Sony, Nintendo and Capcom stand far about any other publisher my a fucking mile.

No. Exclusivity isn't good for gamers.
The only positive I can think of is exclusives may use the hardware more to its max potential.
I agree it's bad for gamers overall, but if you're a Sony only gamer, there's relatively little you can't play on PlayStation this gen.

But that's only good for bragging about exclusives. Personally I got nothing out of the fact that FF XVI was exclusive to PS5 until recently.
Yeah at this rate it's more a marketing tool than anything.

It's more about how they have operated the past 6-7 years. They invested heavily in live service, it blew up in their face, and it is showing in their game output.

I still like my PS5 and think it's the best platform but it could have been way better than it turned out to be.
Definitely lots of missed opportunities

I have zero interest in either Stellar Blade or Rise of the Ronin but anyone with eyes can tell that more effort and quality went into both of those games compared to Pokemon Arceus.

Nope. I've always preferred PlayStation. Disagreeing on game output doesn't mean those you disagree with automatically must be fanboys of other platforms.

I'm not calling all criticism that of fanboys and console warring.

There are PlayStation fans and fanboys who are just as delusional about the production levels here as well.

Games take longer to develop. Tell me what companies are producing more AAA bangers than Sony... go on...

Well, what do even expect, then? You already know those expensive AAA games take a lot of time to make.
What's exactly the difference of having God of War and Spider-Man in 2018 versus having Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2 in 2025?

That looks like a okay 1st & 2nd wave of titles.
Sadly 2 waves are usually done within a year and half onto launch.
This is 5 years

I'm not engaging in list wars. Just a useless exercise where folks end up arguing more about what should and should not be on the list. If you think I'm delusional then that's fine by me.

PS2 having an equal lineup to that by September 2001, or PS3 by May 2008, or PS4 by May 2015, is certainly a take.

Refuses to back their arguments because their arguments have no legs to stand on, but still says they aren't delusional.

No company comes close to the production Sony has put out this gen. Not even close... And it's the primary reason why they distanced themselves from Xbox who has struggled to put out anything of quality.

T2 hasn't put out anything of note this generation and won't until MAYBE Mafia the Old Country.

CDPR released Cyberpunk the same year as TLOUP2 and it was a buggy mess out of the gate.

FromSoftware keeps releasing the same game and DLC.

Capcom also releases the same game over and over and games like Wilds which are tech disasters.

Square Enix has put out FF16 and FF7 Rebirth... 2 games...

Who are these companies putting out bangers year in and year out that makes Sony look like they're resting on their laurels...

Because 2018 is GOATed and Ghost of Yotei and DS2 look and sound mid af, just like the first games in both franchises.

They didn't have the big strong developer & publishing power you rave about back then so they relied on real exclusives.
So today's Playstation doesn't get that slack because they are bigger and got more studios than nearly every publisher out there, but those studio's are way behind even smaller studios.
Every recent article you ignore and every recent comments from even Sony indicates they know like everyone else does that they are slacking.
You're working defence for someone that's already pleaded guilty.

Sadly my PS5 hasn't played an actual exclusive in quite awhile and can't remember the last one that stood out to me besides Astro which was great but still, its Astro

If the broad market is happy with the games Sony has been producing thats cool with me, I can't tell people what to like

Seems a decent chunk of people here haven't been thrilled with their output this gen though
Holy shit, I had to look at my trophy list on psnprofiles and the last trophy I have for a ps5 exclusive is on June 2nd last year for helldivers 2. I thought Moss was exclusive but nope it's on a bunch of vr but that was the 2nd closest "exclusive" I have in the last year.

Thats really grim and by far the longest gap in Sony trophies for me

Not only should he not compare it to previous generations, but he shouldn't expect the PS6 to change this if he does not consider cross gen games "true exclusives". Cross gen is here to stay. And that's a good thing.

This is true. Weird when people act like Cross Gen games can't be counted. As if people on the PS5 didn't have access to Spider Man Miles Morales.

I wouldn't normally use the argument, but there are a couple things I'm looking for here

Impartiality and a clear and obvious answer.

Sony has been clearing the board the last 5 years and as much as people want to lambast them on forums, they continue to clear.

They didn't have the big strong developer & publishing power you rave about back then so they relied on real exclusives.
In 2015 they already had as many studios as they do now, and the question still comes in: what other console had a lineup like that 1.5 years in?

"b-but...", answer the damn question.
And lol, what recent comments from Sony are you even talking about?

Question for you – as much as I dislike the direction Sony went this gen, don't sales numbers conclusively prove that the broader market has no issues? It obviously wouldn't continue doing as well as it has if it wasn't a continually appealing product, surely.
That's only because Nintendo went their own way and didn't got much third party support and Xbox shot itself in both feet, getting the same TP support but losing market share during all these years, leaving Sony to coast this whole gen

If things weren't that easy, they would be pumping quality content out of need and not wasting time and resources chasing trends like GAAS trash

They went after GAAS and hopefully they will course correct

In before "but the sales numbers mean everyone loves what they are doing"

This.

They lost money on the GaaS goose.
Concord + the cancelled games are money down the drain and i am convinced that a Days Gone 2 could have released by now and would have made at least 1$ of profit.

A day in the life of Taul Passi:

  1. browse NeoGAF to see what people are talking about at that moment
  2. write some fluff piece / hit piece about it
  3. submit "article"
  4. restart if you haven't reached your daily quota

It's a you problem, then?
It's a problem that most of the base is feeling. Do you really see people being excited for Ghost 2 or Death Stranding 2? To anywhere of the same level?

When the critical response and sales for both are somewhat muted, don't be surprised. There's a reason they're behind the PS4 when they should be ahead.

ProtoByte ProtoByte Also, curious to hear you opinion on 2019 and 2020 for the GOATStation 4 if you thought both GOT and DS were mid and don't even like AA games.
2019 was mediocre. Days Gone wasn't terrible but it just doesn't measure up even to Ghost. Death Stranding is just... ugh.

2020 was pretty great, actually. Part II's story was extremely flawed imo, but the gameplay was close to flawless. Ghost was fine, but didn't take itself high enough for my tastes. Even then I could see how tough it was going to be to make a compelling "franchise" out of it. I will count Miles Morales since it was cross gen. Pretty good game.

2018 > 2020 > 2017 >> 2019.
