Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Opening Cinematic

I was referring to the same thing that happens in every trailer or video released on this game. People seem stunned by the campiness of JRPG dialogue and harp on it for pages. The dialogue is no where worse than most western dialogue nowadays.

When did this become an East vs. West thing for most people? Exactly one person in this entire thread made a "JRPG bull" post and I'm sure if you went through previous threads, you'll find that people aren't claiming "JRPG" bull but "Toriyama and Wantanabe bull". I have also yet to see anyone champion western writing over eastern. People bitch just as much about Western games (especially Diablo 3, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed... all very high profile games) as they do about Eastern games. Shit, what happened with Mass Effect 3 was a million times worse than what is happening with LR. Several people just don't like Toriyama and Watanabe's writing. Not liking the writing of two men does not equal "I hate all JRPG writing". And even if that isn't the case, JRPG writing isn't for everyone. Grow up and deal with it.

You make a good point Crimson, but then why does everyone single out FFXIII and the sequels for bad writing if it is so systemic in the industry?

Because they're an easy target. Just like crapping on DmC as the worst thing to ever come out of the gaming industry (it's not) is easy. Not many people are going to push back against you.

My guess is because Final Fantasy is supposed to be the 'flagship' JRPG, at least in Western markets. Also, somehow a lot of fans got a bad taste in their mouths and they refuse to let it go.

Honestly, XIII's writing may be on the campy side, but I've actually seen worse this gen. It's just all about perspective really. Final Fantasy is a big budget title so people have incredibly high expectations.

Also, I missed Crimson's original comment so I may be missing something here.

That's true. I would rather praise SE for the impressive CG (for a supposedly 'cheap' game) than hear more about dialogue.

Watched this earlier. I genuinely cannot believe how bad it is. It's just... nonsense. None of what happens makes any sense whatsoever. Complete gibberish.

What I want to praise SE about is making a battle system that looks very intriguing. However, I haven't played it yet so I can't comment on that end but it looks very promising, and word around is that it's pretty good.

I'm starting to love these new battle systems that mix old design with more action/reflex tactics.

Talking about timing I loved that footage of the japanese girl playing the game and timing the defense so that the enemy got exposed/staggered. The priceless reactions helped too. :lol

Man the dialogue is so cheesy...I would be embarrassed to play this with others in the same room.

Those hypothetical people probably watch CSI or some bullshit equivalent of cheese in another form of media. It's always worth pointing that out if people make fun of something you're doing.

Edit: I do realize now though that I have no idea if you're interested in playing this game at all. But it's important to me to not be shy anymore about videogames. I say this as I'm about to start playing Shin Megami Tensei IV in the coffee shop with my aqua blue 3DS. :)

On all the talk of the writing, yeah, the XIII series' writing isn't good by any means. It's true that it's not the worst of this generation, let alone in the context of this generation's RPGs. As bad as XIII can get, didn't pull something as bad as Mass Effect 3's ending, nor does it even approach the badness of the likes of 3rd Birthday or Star Ocean 4. But it's still not good and still is equally deserving of criticism as any other story out there (and if SE is going to keep putting these trailers out there with dialog that are just easy targets, then it deserves to be criticized every step of the way).

Square are kings of CG alongside Blizzard why wouldn't they do CG?

1.) Because the transition between in game graphics and CGI is rarely seamless and frequently jarring. Deus ex was a prime example of this

2.) Because its a giant waste of money, and slows down development?

I agree CG is best saved for opening and/or ending.

Not to derail or anything, but personally I feel that it's not the writing that's bad with Star Ocean 4, it's actually the execution and strange character designs. There are some moments of course that dip but overall, the game has better writing than a lot of other JRPGs I've played lately.

You must have been playing some seriously shitty JRPGs lately then.

Or rather, JRPGs with seriously shitty writing. I guess the gameplay could be wonderful.

Either way, it's some of the worst writing I've seen in a big-budget game. Worse than Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect and everything else people are mentioning. By a large margin, no less.

No, no I haven't. Most have been pretty good actually. I just happen to look at the bigger picture with games instead of jumping on hate bandwagons. Did you play the game with Japanese VA? If not, then I can see why you feel that way.

EDIT: I actually recently replayed through Star Ocean 4 a second time, that's why I'm pretty rock solid about my opinion of it. My statement stands. If you played the game with English VA then you're falling prey to the bad execution.

Visual Works are still superb at creating CG. It was a beautiful opening. That writing though. It is so bad. I think I would enjoy and actually pick up the game if they weren't so serious about it and made it a self parody or something.

Hell the writing in this parody trailer is better than the game we are ending up with.

Okay, this made me laugh. The sheer outrageousness is hilarious.

I can't stop laughing. That parody is AAA stuff.

Now I wish someone would patch dialogue like this into the Japanese version.

You'd think after three games they would have paid attention to complaints about the writing/story but in XIII-2 it actually got worse.

What the fuck is this nonsense.

Also, I just came to a realization: Ali Hillis is a bad actress.

Also also: I can totally see Laura Bailey as Stella in Versus.

Lol if you guys liked that one then you'll really like these ones. This guy is pretty good.

XIII Parody

XIII-2 Parody

You would think but I don't believe they even care anymore. I think Watanabe and Toriyama are just winging it at the moment.

Won't the Hong Kong version of this game not have English subtitles? I like the JP cast so much more. Troy Baker and especially Reno Wilson pretty much carry the dub. Caius has a pretty sweet English voice too, though.

This game looks amazing. I'm one of the minority that loves the XIII mythos, and this game looks better and better the more I see of it.

Can't say I could fault the dialogue and voice acting in that intro in any way.

It is what it is, style-wise. Every aspect of the presentation is over-the-top so expecting sober, low-key, dialogue seems kinda ludicrous to me.

I do wish the people who have already decided they hate Toriyama & co's approach would just back off a bit though. Hearing the same complaints recycled over and over again is entirely unproductive and unenlightening (no pun inteded).

I have played Final Fantasy XIII

I forced myself through Final Fantasy XIII-2

I have absolutely no idea what is happening in this cinematic. Like, at all. I've seen bad fanfiction with more coherent story.

I enjoyed that trailer. I'm excited for this game. My only worry is that I may not have my ps3 by the time this game comes out. Hopefully I can borrow one or something.

This is terrible. What the fuck is going on? They have a trilogy for this busted series, and none of them connect in any way. It's like the writers got bored and decided to do something else with the same assets each game.

They probably got stories from other games that got canned and grafted them onto the FFXIII lore just to sell a few more games.
