Tell that to the people who paid big money to watch actual matches.

And, well, no. Stuff like this isn't "smart" anything. It's just a way of crapping all over everything the Olympics are supposed to represent.
When I attended Beijing, I witnessed several instances of poor sportsmanship, and the crowd immediately retaliated with boos and remarks.

Nobody wants to see that stuff. It empirically sucks.

Pretty great match between the Austrians & Americans there. Misty May and Walsh are pretty fantastic but I was rooting for the Schwaiger sisters :(

Yeah so much drama. Really glad M/W stayed strong though. I was afraid (foolishly) that they would collapse under unfamiliar pressure.

I'm catching up with the weightlifting event now... his elbow... bent backwards.... ahhhhhhhhhh~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I seldom tune into weightlifting, but right when I did that happened. :x

lol at the flimsy poster they use to cover the accident though.

I can't take NBC jacking off to Michael Phelps anymore. It's just too much bullshit.

But he is da olympian of all time...

Umm, the man who has the most EVER Olympic medals. Kind of a big deal.

Besides playing an interview with him instead of the 7/7 tribute during the opening ceremonies they're choosing to play clip packages of him instead of events during prime time. We already know who the ugly bastard is, I don't need to see him winning all his medals again.

HBO's sports program did a profile on that weightlifter (as well as a runner from southern Sudan that runs for the US). She's the sister of a NY Jets player and played football through high school (I think nose tackle?) before the game passed her by (college being a whole other level size / speed-wise). She came across as very vivacious and I'm looking forward to cheering her on.

Yeah its lame. It is a big deal though imo.

Though I don't see most of the BS because I have been watching BBC streams.

She was also on an episode of MTV True Life.

Holley Mangold.

One can imagine how North Korea alone managed to get 3 golds just from weightlifting.

I guess KJI really do look out after his comrades even after his death.

Actually, Kim Jong Il just took over their bodies and made all the lifts himself. They are just his vessels.

Can anyone explain this? I'm a bit confused. So did the IOC acknowledge there was a malfunction in the clock and tried to give her a consolation medal thats not even an Olympic medal?

I might be wrong but I think the fencing body admitted there was a mistake and attempted to save face with this medal thing. If they did admit they made a mistake than that is the worst thing they could have done as she appealed and they said she was wrong but turns out she wasn't but too late for that.

I know it may be unprecedented, but... I'd just have her fence the gold medal winner. She wins, they award an additional gold. She loses, they award an additional silver. But some kind of "sorry you can't have a real medal" medal seems a bit hollow.

It's pretty bullshit that they know they messed up and screwed her out of a medal but aren't willing to actually fix the problem. Give her a second bronze at the very least.

Actually this is the best solution.

What they should have done was just have another overtime period but that can't happen because of the fencing rules where one person has advantage and doesn't need to score to win.

If it was intentional that they denyed her the medal it would happen. In 2002 they awarded a co gold medal to a figure skating team who a judge cheated out of gold.

Ah, that's right -- a Canadian couple, right?

Edit: Yup, Sale and Pelletier. Insert the accent aigu as needed, I don't know how to do it on this keyboard. =)

Yep, the Canadian pair were clearly the best and the Russian pair actually fell and somehow still won Gold. Later it was revealed that some judges traded fixed results, the Russians win Gold in this event and the French win Gold in another event.

This pommel horse commentor is ace. I would have no idea what I'm supposed to be looking for in this event if it weren't for him.

Are Americans only interested in swimming and gymnastics? Almost there is zero hype or media coverage on other sports compared to swimming and gymnastics.

Hell, I don't even think basketball doesn't get enough coverage.
