Are Americans only interested in swimming and gymnastics? Almost there is zero hype or media coverage on other sports compared to swimming and gymnastics.

Hell, I don't even think basketball doesn't get enough coverage.

The ball team is eviscerating every country that they go up against, and everyone expects that. It won't get its shine until the gold medal game, providing they don't get dramatically upset on the way there.

.01 seconds, wow.

I was thinking some, and... If Usain Bolt is overwhelmingly in the lead in a heat and suddenly starts to show off, slows down so he can make poses etc. (he has done it)....

Isn't that technically in the same grey area as the badminton players in terms of "not doing your best"? Just a thought.

I've seen a lot of volleyball, cycling, and tennis coverage too. But thats during the day. I'm sure track and field will get a ton of coverage.

No.

Just watched the end of the men's 77kg weightlifting. The Chinese dude that won clean and jerked 204kg (448lbs!) on the last lift. Amazing.

Track and field will probably get a lot of coverage.

TONS of volleyball coverage. Normal and Beach. Basketball is killing everyone so nobody cares. There has also been a fair amount of diving coverage as well.

The rest of the sports we care about haven't started yet.

Do explain.

He wouldn't be trying to lose. He'd just be winning in style.

The badminton players were intentionally trying to lose.

Had the Badminton players been a few points from a win and then started playing crazy shots to show off then it would compare to Bolt.

I swear, gymnastics is the most depressing thing to watch during the Olympics. No matter what country the person is from, you always feel horrible once they screw up and they try not to break down as soon as they're finished. Then the announcer adds enough negativity to add to the picture of the guy hiding his face and it's like it's time to watch something else. Luckily, swimming came on and saved the day.

First, it was the U.S. men's gymnastics, then the Russian female gymnastics last night that was sad to see (little girls crying is sad period) and then again tonight.

Swimming is more a celebration of the person who swam the fastest instead of watching other people make mistakes...lol

Yeah, gymnastics has the highest highs and lowest lows.

gymnastics depresses me because these super athletes will be cripples just a few years after puberty. all athlete's bodies takes a beating to some extent, but not many sports are as harsh as gymnastics.

Ha, yeah. He really went for it.

That he did. But it served the purpose. He's absolutely right, explaining why were ass at weightlifting is not a simple one-fix thing. There was some things I disagreed about (but that could just be me taking certain things too seriously, when clearly he's trying to inject humor into the articles), but it was on the mark overall. I did choke and spit my coffee out when I saw the heading "Will Crossfit Save Olympic Lifting?".

I read that Lyle McDonald article some time ago. It's a pretty good introduction, but it's not particularly well written and he seems to play into stereotypes a bit too much (even when he admits one of his sources has corrected him). But the crux of the argument is spot on. The best part of the article are the plugs he provides. If you're at all interested in any of the subjects he brings up (and how couldn't you be?), you owe it to yourself to read a few of the books he cites.

Could you give us a summery of what he said?

Yeah, I went off and read a few things afterwards. What surprised me though is that I learnt a ton about things I wasn't expecting to learn anything about... like track cycling, sprinting and long distance running. :)

Can Microsoft please Tell Comcast next time that they MUST use Silverlight next Olympics games? WHO THE FUCK USES YOUTUBE, Google Servers with TERRIBAD Latency? WHO? I dont care if they got fiberwires ready in the midwest, There is a reason Comcast USES Silverlight for Xfinty. There is a reason why everybody is moving away from FLASH. UGH. UGH. UGH.

Not enough people have silverlight installed in their browser and even MS is moving away from it to HTML 5. Bad latency is better than people struggling to get silverlight to work.

Hooooly fucking shit. I think that's actually the longest series of articles I have EVER seen on the internet! It took me about an 1+ hours just to SKIM through it....

Any way some sort of summary could be made? Or just a main point or two? I don't really have specific interest in even skimming it but I'd like to know what the reasons are.

Nevermind, decided to skim the later articles.

why did the korean team in badminton get the DQ? I know the chinese team got the DQ because they threw the match but what does that have to do with the korean team that won?

Do you really, really want to know, and have about a week to find out why?

Why the US Sucks at Olympic Lifting

Fantastic set of articles... but holy shit does it go on. :D
Thanks. Actually went through the whole thing, while skimming much of it. It doesn't even finish! It stops at article 22, then ... nothing. There's no dates on the articles, so I don't even know if the last one is current, and there's more to come, or he just stopped. There's a 2008 copyright at the bottom of the page. The author's closing says he'll have more on Monday, but which Monday is that? I feel unfulfilled, like when I hit the abrupt end of the Initial D anime on Netflix.

Yeah, he got it. 165kg.
Wow. Judges must have been feeling particularly generous.

There's a link at the bottom, you may have got confused because it says part 1... but it's part 1 of his summary. :)

both teams were trying to lose.

chinese lifter manages to lock it out despite having a fucked up elbow. coaches pulled him after this lift, which was 10kg below his PB. he still got silver.

gold lift. 205 kg aka 450 lbs.

Wow. Judges must have been feeling particularly generous.

I don't understand the judging. Sometimes they are really harsh. Othertimes they give 3 all clears to guys who clearly straightened their arms out at the top of their lift. makes no sense to me.

Definitely the most exciting weight class yet. The gold medalists technique just blew my mind, when everyone else would do a lunge to press the weight up, he does an overhead squat with both feet planted.

Also the judges suck because they are judges :P

I call fucking bullshit on NBC not airing the 2nd set of the US beach volleyball game. I know they can't show all events on TV, but at least show the events that are chosen in full.

Did they expect to actually get away with that nonsense?

I agree with you. I really hate the snippets. It doesn't feel right.
