Yes. Exactly what I said. They don't change the decisions made by the timekeeper/referee. Tha'st it right there. Question of fact, that was the term I was looking for, stupid dictionary let me down once more.

Should've appealed (to the referee) before the match was over, she didn't, but instead appealed after she had lost, because apparently either this situation has never occured before or because they tried whatever they could.

They were in the winning position. They expected the clock to have gone to 0 in the very next moment. If it had gone to 0 like they expected it to, they would have won, there was no reason to appeal at 1 second because they were expecting that they were literally going to win the very next moment.

These 100m preliminary rounds are amazing.

Was it Bejiing or the World Champs that Samoa (I think) Sent the like 250lbs guy for the 100m?

still world record. she could have just entered a heptathlon and fail all the other disciplines. what are you calling this? world record for athletes who are not dedicated to one event?

Call it a world record time in the heptathlon, which is what it is.

And Ennis is a favourite to win the heptathlon, not fail all the other events.

Look how that turned out for her. I'm sorry - she didn't appeal the decision because she was certain she was going to win and lost instead. Now she's in all media, complaining about how it is unfair, how she should've won etc. and I have a hard time feeling sorry for her.
Are you German or something? Everyone, including the IOC and FIE are on her side, offering her a consolation medal.

That's the point though, a consolation medal, which - by the way - she's already refused. They're currently trying to get a joint silver medal.

It might've been a sad story initially, but at this point I have a hard time feeling sorry for her.

Err...why exactly? She lost because of an official's error.

Heptathalon has its own world record and it is 7291 points. The fact that Ennis ran the best a heptathlete has done in a heptathalon is a great achievement but not a record. One of Russia's high jumpers did a decathalon for fun last year and did the best any decathlete ever did in high jump but his overall score was expectedly average.

Rules, how do they work ?
They didn't work. And neither did the timekeeper.
I don't know why you don't see how the decision is wrong. Are you German?

She lost because the timekeeper/referee made a mistake that she could (and should) have appealed during the match but didn't. You could say she lost because she didn't appeal early enough."

lol you even admit that it was a mistake by the refs. your argument is logistical and not of actual reason. good job on your incredible logical fallacy.

The FIE (International Fencing Federation) and Korean Olympic Committee have signed a letter asking the IOC to award Shin a silver medal.

The Korean Olympic Committee is seeking a joint silver medal for fencer Shin A-lam after her defeat in the epee semifinal to Germany's Britta Heidemann due to a hugely controversial timekeeping glitch.

The KOC on Thursday said it will send an official letter, signed by its chairman Park Yong-sung and the International Fencing Federation (FIE), to the International Olympic Committee to that effect.
...
Park has already signed the letter and forwarded it to the FIE, whose president, Alisher Usmanov, also signed it. Park now plans to meet with IOC President Jacques Rogge to discuss the issue.

It wasn't a mistake. The timekeeper deliberately didn't do anything for 4-5 seconds.

It's the fastest recorded time in the heptathlon 100m hurdles. Call it a HB, heptathlon best.

"Referee or timekeeper made a mistake ? Not going to appeal it, I'm going to win anyway. Whoops, I lost, time to appeal."

1) Provide me a link or two that says that the reason the appeal was thrown out was because it wasn't made at the correct time. I haven't heard this at all.

2) It's possible...probable even, that she, her coach, and people in the audience had no idea what was going on when it happened. They're not the timekeepers. The whole incident went down very quickly, and it happened to be the last second of the match. This is far from a competitor complaining about the results after the match ended, and you know it.

Fencing isn't even a subjective sport, from what I can tell. So for you to say that you have no sympathy for someone who trained years for this moment, rightfully won the match, but didn't because they didn't contest an official's error (intentional or not), that's just insanely heartless and you should feel bad as a person.

Here's the entire incident from an audience member's view who recorded it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7QENF5Uf7k

Did you watch the match?
This is like saying you can appeal whether or not a shot left a basketball player's hand before the time goes off, but only before the time goes off.

When it comes to the fencing issue I can understand if they officially measure it in tenths of a second and the clock doesn't show that, but it potentially invalidates the match if they then reset the clock from 0.[whatever] to 1.0.

They don't measure it in fractions. Its seconds only.
The 15-year old British boy didn't start the clock.
