Quit being a dick. He clearly commented about the Kazakhstan / Japan medal rankings.

See? You guys take this thing too seriously, all jumping on me for a little (dickish ok) comment. This is the same reason why when other nations win it's because they dope (according to the US media) and you can't seem to give them credits. But I'll drop it here, I'm just here to enjoy the Olympics (I'm probably on the wall of shame of the first Topic), I'm just tired to see the same discussion around petty things (like the medal table).

I can't believe this is a sport lol.

AhFm+

Ok man. I guess you didn't make a retarded "American Salt" comment. I don't give a shit about how many more medals China has than the US or how many more medals the US has over Ghana.

Broad sweeping comments are stupid. There is your salt.

And yes, Equestrian is ridiculous.

I wonder if more people agree gold is the only way to rank things after USA over take china once more swimming is done and track and field starts :p

We top the overhyped table by miles anyway

GB GB GB GB GB

first time watching fencing now for me the arena thingy is badass
Just wait for the track cycling.

Which is better, 1 gold or five 5th places? A bronze or two 4th place finishes?
Ummm.......you do realize that most people do put value on 2nd and 3rd place. The gold/silver/bronze mentality is pretty ingrained. After than the prestige drops significantly. Fact is if you win ANY medal you will be remembered forever in most records. Can't say the same for 4th downward.

Just rewatch the Eventing Competition, especially the cross country ride! It's clearly a sport.

Yeah I haven't really watched much of it. May have to tune in to a few events to get some more perspective on it.

Better to just not compare. I see them as individual and national achievements. For example, GB getting a Bronze in mens gymnastics yesterday was an achievement for their country and athletes.

The BBC are just repeating the equestrian event from this morning. I'm confused though. They showed the show jumping where Germany won the gold, but then showed them jumping again for the individual medals (where the UK women dropped out of the medals). I thought they took the score they did during the event as their individual score? I don't remember them doing the dressage or cross country twice.

Edit:eventing not a sport? Smh. Maybe you'd have an argument for chess not being a sport, but there is clearly physical skill, agility and mastering of your equipment (your horse). These guys have longer relationships with their horses than most people do with each other.

I remember in highschool when I did track for a year. I thought I was a pretty fast runner. I went to a tournament and got 4th place in the 100m dash. I was like "fuck this"

Gold is the best.

By example, 45 bronze medals do not have the same importance of a single gold medal.

I am pretty sure anyone can remember more a gold winner than a bronce one. No one remembers silver and bronze winners.

fencing is insane, not only does the stage look really cool. Kind of tron like. But the back and forth between them looks really cool.

the only gold medals that matter are the ones won in sports people give a fuck about.

lol pretty much.

100 meter dash, Hockey, Woman's Figure Skating, Woman's Gymnastics, and a few swimming events are all that most people care about (most casual olympics watchers). May have missed a couple.

Show jumping involves two rounds and calculates from both. So they take the score from the team event and then those individuals with the best show jumps "qualify" to do the second round and go for a medal.

Haha! I felt this way running Invitationals and States in Virginia during high school. You run your races and see what's going on and you're like, "fuck this noise." lol

No one huh?

I think people who come from a background interest in team sports where its championship or bust have this attitude. Most general Olympics watchers I have met though do place importance on the lesser medals. I know I do. Maybe I am a freak though :P

Most records remember everyone who competed, so that's not really true. But with that logic we also have to rank the sports based on which is the most prestigious. A gold in 100 meter dash is definitely more prestigious than one for one of those horse shows. It doesn't matter when we are tallying the numbers, objectively, and then the only logical choice is to rank countries by Gold, or assign a point value to all finishes, so all finalists, the top 8, get points. In fact, I think they do that, but nobody cares. Ranking is done by Gold, as it should be. The rest are tiebreakers. The "bu bu what about 46 bronzes vs. a gold" argument is pretty silly.

What? Pretty much all track and field events are more important than Hockey, and why not Men's Gymnastics?

Even qualifying to get to the Olympics is a fantastic achievement. Getting any medal, even making it through the qualifier is an intense battle for any sport.

People sitting on the sidelines can't put down a team for getting third in the OLYMPICS. They're going against the cream of the cream, the best of the world, and still placed.

Damn it. Lisicki / Kerber are in the process of crashing out against the Williams sisters in the doubles. Things arent looking good for the Radwanska sisters either :(

So if a team won a silver medal in every single event in the Olympics, but no golds, they would be worse than a team which won a gold medal in dressage and no other medals?

Damn two French weightlifters out not able to do a Snatch.

Edit: Seems the second guy has upped his weight to buy him more time.

Couldn't disagree more. Not going to get too much into it though since people obviously insist on thinking only gold matters. Luckily the vast majority of common watchers disagree so.....whatever. (hell I have never talked to anyone outside of gaf with that attitude).

So due to NBC delaying broadcasts, how can someone in the US see things live? What about getting the less popular events live?
