Track and Field is the only thing that really matters. I love watching every Olympic event but this is a fact.

This is insane and not true. There was a time when it was true.....that time is not now. Phelps is easily a match hype and fame wise for Bolt.

Gymnastics is probably watched more on average than both.

Was reading something and flipped back to fencing. Saw a guy intentionally poking himself in the butt with the other guy's foil. Laughter ensued before I realized they were testing the hitzone on the suit.

To assess overall scores, they should just weight the value of the medals. So a gold scores 3 points, silver 2 and bronze 1.

So due to NBC delaying broadcasts, how can someone in the US see things live? What about getting the less popular events live?

They have them on different channels and online... Not all stuff is delayed the US vs. GER mens volleyball earlier was live, it should say in the top right hand corner if it's live or not.

Or just stop doing that.

It's dosen't relate at all to the olympic spirit and it's also not official and recognised by the IOC.

So why care.

Couldn't disagree more. Not going to get too much into it though since people obviously insist on thinking only gold matters. Luckily the vast majority of common watchers disagree so.....whatever. (hell I have never talked to anyone outside of gaf with that attitude).

I never said they doesn't matter. They matter a lot, as do 4th places, and 5th and 6th. Especially if it's a sport you personally care about. But when it comes to actually ranking countries on a medal list, since a lot of people care about that stuff, Gold is the logical way to go. Limiting it to top 3 is arbitrary and silly, even if they are the ones who get some hardware for their troubles.

But I agree, no need to get into it any more. All the official ranking is done by Gold anyway, so I don't need to complain about weird opinions on a forum. :p

I wonder what the ability to stream events that weren't deemed 'cool enough' for television will do for the popularity of lesser known events. There is a lot more hype for weightlifting and fencing than I ever recall.

Could cause some fantastic athletes that are up and coming to try new things.

You must be quite a whiner to be a good fencer :D
Yeah, acting like you are in control of the bout is an important part of fencing, unfortunately. It allows you to maintain a psychological edge over the opponent and the referee.

That, and fencing tends to attract and/or promote egotistic, bombastic personalities for whatever reasons.

It's fun, though. I love having personalities on the piste much more than, for example, in tennis where you're expected to be collected and sportsmanlike at all times. "I played a great game, I took my shots when I had them..." Yeah, ok, I don't need to hear that for the 100th time.

No shortage of drama or other BS in fencing. Fucking ridiculous

That's why I'm loving the BBC coverage. 24 channels so every event gets live coverage. So now I can use something like the great official Olympic results iPad app (free and fantastic) to choose what to watch without worrying about whether my broadcaster has deemed it suitable for following or not.
