The Olympics are a nice distraction but they only come around once every 4 years, they're a sideshow. An Olympic gold medal would rank higher than a masters event but its the Slams that every tennis player wants to win.

Weird match, Federer wasn't into it at any point.

No reason to risk getting hurt when he has the US Open in 3 weeks, he wasn't getting paid either for the Olympics so there was no motivation. Millions of dollars always over an injury without getting paid.

If he honestly wants a gold medal over a slam, he's crazy.

A medal makes a nice ADDITION to a tennis career to complement slams; it shouldn't be the crowning achievement for a top player.

I'd say it's definitely up there. To be crowned Olympic champion and compete against the best players in the sport is a very worthy achievement.

Holu shit you got to see this Chinese woman's weight lifter. She broke that Oympic record like is nothing. Zhou lulu is the name.

edit: and the Russian 1 up her with 2 more kg.

He has a gold medal at a home Olympics, a once in a lifetime event.

While that may be true, the Single's Gold has always eluded him. He has been talking about how he has wanted the gold, and said that with it being at Wimbledon this year, it was prime for him to take.

not in tennis. it's only the 2nd time not a total mug won the tournament, it has no history in the sport and history is really important. a gold is the icing on the cake not a part of it.

he's got seven and the career gs since 2009, i don't understand.

He means the golden slam.

Anyone trying to diminish this achievement for Andy Murray just ends up looking silly.

He beat Roger Federer in a best of 5 set championship match on grass. There are no qualifiers needed.

It should be, and I'm not just saying that because I'm British.

The Olympics come around once every four years. A Grand Slam comes around four times every year. Everything the Olympics stands for means that a Gold Medal should be the ulitimate crowning achievement in any sport or event. I know that isn't the case in reality, but it should be.

Winning Wimbledon meant record breaking and going back to number 1 for Federer; it's all about context.

beating federer in straights is fantastic, winning gold is to and at this stage of his career i believe this is his favorite win so far but i doubt he would take the gold over any slam.

Yeah, I don't like pulling the "expert" card but anyone saying the Olympics are anywhere close to important as Grand Slams for tennis is talking out of ignorance.

You think winning an Olympic gold isn't worth serious money in improving his profile and sponsorships?

And it affects the rankings

this is all i am saying and i said multiple times how happy i am for murray (even before the match). but gold is not that important in the sport of tennis and i stand by that.

it's not as important but it might have been to Fed. He's won the others loads of times, but he's never won this. He's never been the Olympic champion

I'm even enjoying Murray's win now and I'm not even British.

Pretty much. For a home athlete to win the gold in one of the most hallowed places in sport, against those odds and what he's recently gone through, it's super inspiring and a great thing to experience.

Good on ya, Murray and Team GB!
