God people. Swimming is WAY WAY bigger internationally than any of the other sports you've compared it to. Of course it should be better represented

Football (soccer) is the biggest sport in the world. Yet I don't see over a hundred medals to be earned in football.

I don't know about the rest of you but I think I'd rather there just be a seperate thread for discussion of which sports should and shouldn't be represented. Seems very driven by which ones your own country is good at.

Just noticed that Chinese 20km walkers have improved massively in the last 4 years. In Beijing their walkers finished 4th, 10th and 30th. Now it was 1st, 3rd and 4th.

Or maybe everyone else did worse. Don't know about the times.

Beach football is fucking dreadful. There's the odd moment of exceptional skill, but the beach part of it takes all of the entertainment out of it for me

You could create a ton of football events
- Top goalscorer (in olympic tournament)
- Ball skills (scored like gymnastics)
- 5-a-side
- Beach
- Dribbling race (who can dribble through a course the quickest)
- Target (aim to hit a target or set of targets)
- Free kicks (score as many free kicks from various positions around difficult sets of obstacles)
etc

Just for fun :P

6 total in Beijing. Compared to over 100 in swimming.

It doesn't take a genius to see how each sport suits itself differently to medals. The knockout tournament team sports all have low medal counts, who gives a shit?

This kind of Olympic skills tournament would actually be quite fun, I wouldn't mind this at all.

The problem is that in all other sports, there is just 1 material goal to be fulfilled.

Get to 100 m. as fast as possible.

Jump with a pole over a bar. (Pole Vault)

Jump with your body over a bar. (High jump)

Throw a ball as far as possible. (Shot put)

Even though, through times, all these sports (the latter 3) have been going through several technical improvements. We do not scissor jump over the bar, we do the fosbury flip. Yet, we do not see any gold medal being hand out in Scissor Jump.

Same thing with Shot put etc.

Meanwhile, in Swimming, we have had new techniques developed, but yet kept the old techniques as different events.

The winner set an Olympic record (not world record though).

Are they the only team to have their colors on their helmets? Looks tacky as hell.

No, a few others had their flags or colours on their masks (Romania's was yellow, GBR had the Union Flag on theirs).

As a fencer myself I don't like them and also think they're pretty tacky, but a part of me actually thinks they're appropriate for the olympics. For people watching on TV/in the arena who aren't familiar with the sport it's a good way to differentiate the fencers.

But that's ridiculous. Football is a team sport. Those aren't actual competitions. And I'm not saying swimming should be better represented to affect medal count, I'm saying it should be represented according to the major competitive races that these athletes strive their whole life to compete in. It's not about the sport as a whole, as much as the events within the sport.
