only thing I don't like is the character. so tired of angry bald white guys. long for character creation.
Indeed. Huge turn off for me, especially after seeing that cut scene video where he's surrounded by babes Kratos-style. I was actually interested in the game despite the cheesy art style until they showed this.

Steam sale or Xmas gift for me, I think, if the reviews are good.

There was a thread a while back questioning WHY this game would be targeting this date for release this fall, especially with Shadow of Mordor and Dragon Age coming out all within a few weeks. Different styles of games of course but its like, how many 20+ hour fantasy-setting games do you think people are going to buy within 6 weeks?

I tweeted the developers that they were crazy to release it now instead of say, March 2015 when nothing is out and they gave me a reply about being so confident and loving a challenge.

I admire their moxie but jesus, sometimes you gotta pick your battles a little better I think. The game looks neat but like so many have said, I'm not getting anywhere near this game until 2015 at the earliest and by then it'll be 17.99 on GameFly.

Eh, I think the release date is fine. It's coming out on 10/28. That's almost a month after Shadow of Mordor (09/30) and Dragon Age isn't coming out until 11/18. If anything it fits right in a nice little gap. The closest games to it are The Evil Within on 10/14, Legend of Korra on 10/21, Bayonetta 2 on 10/24 and Tales of Hearts R & AC: Unity on 11/11. I'm certainly grateful for it to be fitting in that window between other games for me.

boss fights look pretty detailed. we see a ton of dark souls here, obviously, but I have no problem with that if it's a well done game, and by all indication this is. Nice dodging, resource management, weapon switching, break the armor off the boss, etc.

Wait, so it's just like Dark Souls 2 aside from being mashy is what you're saying?

Hah, I haven't played DSII yet, but I'll take your word for it. It's no Demon's or Dark Souls, but I think Deck13 are right to aim for a slightly different market.

In on this hype. I never played any of the Souls game as my PS3 is retired to workout room status for the girlfriend. This will prepare me for Bloodborne.

You guys realize that some of your favorite genres started out as clones of other clones right? Not really sure if you specifically were using this as a negative, but I know many have.
It was in positive, i said that it is a new ip so i want to give it a chance, the fact that is Souls inspired is a big plus for me.

Buying this day 1. Love to support a new IP from unproven developer when the game looks this good and takes inspiration from one my favorite series. Couldn't care less about the hype, all the hyped up games this year have been ass anyway.

I remember seeing some early gameplay on IGN with a dev, IIRC. It had honestly fallen off my radar until I saw this post. I was intrigued how the dev said the game was similar to Zelda (and I suppose Darksiders as well) in that having certain items would allow you to progress into different areas of the game. I'm going to wait for reviews, but I think this could really be something special.

Same here.. It was on my radar then it went out of the media and it felt of my radar.
Hope they plan on making a last media push or at least a stream with the gold build so we can judge game performance last time it had massive tearing problems.

yeah, really. what does hype ever get us? it gets us titanfall, watch dogs, and destiny, each one equating to shit times twenty. fuck hype.

The screen tearing was absolutely atrocious in the last video I saw. I hope they fix this.

For quite some time I was looking forward to the game. But then the more and more I saw of it, the more and more I became uninterested. I'm still willing to purchase it depending on feedback. But I'm definitely in caution mode.

Awesome art style and looks like there are a lot of potential.
I really hope this game will turned out good.

Right now it's a day one, we will see.

They did enemy front and the sniper: ghost warrior games?

This game would have to get amazing reviews for me to even bother checking it out

This actually looks like what Darksiders should have been.

Anyone picking up this bad boy?

Impress your artsy-fartsy friends with this gigantic bust of a bald viking!

Didn't realize Vikings wore armor like that.

considering this character design encompasses everything I hate about video game characters, pretty much, no. If I buy the game it's entirely in spite of this horrendous design.

I'm hyped. Traded in my Destiny towards it. Bring on the 28th! This and Inquisition are the only remaining games I want this year.

I still don't understand why they expect people to spend money on a bust of a character they know nothing about. The statue's the sort of thing that comes with a Lords of the Fallen 3 CE, if it ever becomes a franchise.

I'm interested in this. I'm all for a new take on the Souls like gameplay.
The Souls games never really clicked for me, they just felt a little too janky.
The main character looks pretty boring and generic though.

I played this at PAX and really enjoyed it. There was like no line for it, so I got to play it at two different times of the day on Saturday.

Its Dark Souls under a different name. I am not sure if it will be of the same quality as the Souls games, but what I played was fun, looked great, handled well, and had great environments.

From my writeup at VGEvo.com:

"Much to my dismay, the enemy didn't always react to my strikes either. I could land a clean hit and the enemy was able to start its own attack, rather than be stunned momentarily."

This has been my thought from the first video they showed of actual gameplay.

I have brought it up subsequently, but the defense force has always come out to insist I was wrong.

It's a bummer that was I suspected was true, because I would love more souls. This unfortunately looks like a C-grade clone.

To be fair this is a common issue in the Souls series as well.

I think this fits the bill for that type of game than say Bound by Flame on PS4 and PC, this looks way better. Just an unfortunate release date. Also Bloodborne is entirely different than Dark Souls, or so I thought, I think people will be in for a rude awakening with that one.

BB plays exactly like Souls. So nope.

Anyway, I'm mildly excited for Lords of the Fallen. The biggest concern I have atm is that many enemies don't seem to react to getting hit at all.

I've had my eye on this game for a while. Looks like it could be good, and after beating Shadow of Mordor I'm itching for more fantasy RPG action. This and Dragon Age should hold me over until Bloodborne and Witcher 3 roll around.

That being said the box art is flat-out terrible. Laughably bad, really. Companies really need to start having box art that reflects more about what the game is like rather than just plaster the protagonist on the cover. I agree with poster who said they should have used the image of the warrior facing one of the bosses.

I think a large reason for the lack of hype is

1. Very little marketing, even when we are so close to release.

2. Game just looks GENERIC AS FUCK.

3. Every time I hear someone talking about the game, they mostly say it's like "X" Game + "Y" Game. It doesn't sound unique. EDIT: Heck, even you said it's like Dark Souls X Darksiders :D

4. That main character just looks bad.

5. They haven't shown anything that's genuinely extra-ordinary or great to get the hype going.

Ouch, so true.

It depends on the weapon. Luckily Dark Souls II added the "poise damage" stat on weapons, which is helpful (it was there in the previous games, just invisible or transparent). The higher it is, the quicker it will stun, stagger, or even knockback the enemy. With smaller weapons you need two or even three quick hits to stagger them, with bigger weapon one is usually enough.

It of course depends on the enemies. Some of the non-boss enemies, especially the DLC, have such absurd poise that they're really hard to stagger. There's even one enemy that I'm sure has infinite poise (the lion warriors in the Shaded Ruins) because even with the biggest, meanest club I couldn't ever stagger them. -_-

So yeah, in principle the concept is sound, it just needs to be implemented correctly.

Turned away by the Blizzard/ Warhammer art direction. I find huge pauldrons ala space marine and the over the top muscle mass to be un-enjoyable to look at.

Souls game while crazy and fantastical still have class and grace. IE they give female characters appropriate armor while having a goddess with massive assets and a topless spider lady in the same game. Not to mention many armor sets from all of the Souls game are full of swag combining both form and function.

When I look at Lord of the Fallen art direction, all I feel is bleh.

The balling style of Bloodborne doesn't help hype me for Lord of Fallen one bit either.

In short, not hyped by a game that may copy Souls mechanic, but none of its grace in art design.

If this gives me the fast-rolling, precision-based movement of DeS and DS1 that was absent in DS2, then I'll be very happy with this. Not a huge fan of the clunky, heavy looking art style, but it's a long way until Bloodborne so I'll likely grab this day 1.

I'm fairly excited. There were a few interesting combat features shown in the Videogamer video:

- While dual-wielding (and with some other weapons, I think), hitting attack button again the moment when stamina bar flashes, turns the next attack into a faster/stronger combo move. Think Witcher 1 (might be better examples out there)

- Even just the personalized "totem" spells that you pick on character creation seem to be more interesting than a lot of Souls spells, imo

- Your "gauntlet" spells are sorta crafted a la Lichdom: Battlemage. You have a spell type, then you add a rune of sorts for a specific attribute.

I'm really excited for this game. Shadow of Mordor, Dragon Age: Inquisition and Lords of the Fallen are my big three for this year. Hopefully this one far exceeds my expectations like Shadow of Mordor did.

Wait, so it's just like Dark Souls 2 aside from being mashy is what you're saying? Sounds like it would still be pretty decent for action adventure fans at least.

And why the hell didn't they at least use something like this for the box art?

The bottom one even evokes Castlevania.

These wallpapers are pretty sick, see I love the artwork.

I really wish this had kept with its original vision, right now it looks like something most people would have no problem missing..this needed more ambition and more time..I watched the video and waited for something to happen that would make me feel like "okay, this is why this game exists!" and I see nothing..

First post nails it. I tried not to think of the souls games when watching gameplay, but hot damn it looks so similar (gameplay wise)

I feel this game could be a pleasant surprise, but as others have said I don't like the look for the main character. It's easily ignored if the rest of the game is amazing. I'm still unsure as to whether I'll buy or not (have a nice backlog of games currently).

I remember a lot of people saying similar things to what is being said in this thread about Dragons Dogma. And they were completely wrong, with it being for me the best RPG of last gen which I don't say lightly. A lot of people owned up to making a mistake on that game. A game without media hype or a shit ton of money advertising it can do well off word of mouth.

I hope for similar results. :)

As for the timing, when else could this game be released? Next year it'd be dead on arrival with all the other releases. This year has sod all releases and a crazy hunger for games from the consumer (well, me anyway). A lot of people may have been burned by Dragon Age and want to try something else. Otherwise there is not much competition in terms of RPG's.
