Can somebody explain to me the appeal in Monster Musume? Out of morbid curiosity I checked a bit of it out and all I saw was:

  • Milquetoast, everyman male protagonist who is interchangeable with a million other limp dick protagonists in anime/manga
  • Girls with little in the way of personality who fall head over heels for the MC when his only redeeming character trait is literally that he is a nice guy
  • Some of the most unoriginal, bland takes on Monster Girls I've ever see. I could find more interesting and original takes on Harpies, Centaurs, Nagas, etc. if I closed my eyes and randomly selected an artist from Deviantart, Tumblr and/or Pivix.
  • An artsyle that does nothing to standout amongst a sea of manga/comics/whatever in similar genres
Is it just the boobs? Because plenty of other manga do a better job at providing fanservice. I mean if the manga looked like Prison School that would be one thing but it looks so stereotypical! Mediocre characters & bland art - what a "winning" combination!

Its because of the lewdness man.

this is why i love manga, so many unique concepts:

Shiori Experience

"What happens when a regular female japanese teacher gets taken over by the ghost of JIMMY HENDRIX!?"

What the living fuck, you say Jimmy Hendrix.

Shieldbro is pretty weird, and apparently it gets worse. Feels like that and Mushoku Tensei got hyped a while back and both are terrible. Light novels, web novels, all are cancer.

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha is pretty good tho. JSDF Gate is fun as well.

I like Shieldbro from what I've read. Not great, but worth a read.

To be fair to LNs, there are some pretty good ones out there like Maoyuu or Spice & Wolf.

Instantly added to my backlog.

The protagonist doesn't have a persecution complex until he's persecuted, though. And the accusation was just the cherry on top of his get fucked sundae.

Well, the series sets it up from the start that he's downtrodden, the underdog, etc. What I'm saying isn't that the rape accusation stuff started it, but rather that it exacerbates it and does so in a way that bugs the hell out of me.

And a smaller quibble I have with shieldbro is Raph's transition from daughter to wifely companion with a level up. Fucking mmos, man. That's before we get to the fucked up power dynamics where she willingly assumes slavery for him again, to be his property.

I received the fifth volumeof Natsu no Zenjitsu without realizing it was the last one. I don't have the courage to start reading. I feel like I'll cry.

Missed this post, can you tell which chapter was the last one when you are done? Anyway, I bet the ending is where Akira decides to quietly withdraw from Tetsuo's life.

2ykravc.png

RIP Akira.

They should make another season of Seirei no Moribito.

T_________T

Maternal bond shared by two characters. Still the best scene in Moribito

Won't mind Kemono no Souja Erin getting another season too.

These series are never about the guy, they are about the girls. For characters, that's pretty typical too, each chapter usually focuses on one of the girls in some scenario, next chapter a different one in a different scenario. Look at Jitsu wa Watashi wa and Dr. Hitomi's Infirmary, they do pretty much the same thing. They have one or two character traits or running jokes to go along with them. For designs I don't really know what you want? They are what they are, centaurs, lamias, harpies.
The art is good tho, I'd say it's one of the main draws. Expressive faces, lots of background details, and well drawn.

It's a smut series through and through, if you don't like others you probably won't like this. The appeal is in the title. Also if you compare almost any series to Prison School it looks worse, art or otherwise.

I remember my friend mentioning Shiori Experience to me way back. It sounded really interesting. I don't think it was translated back when he told me, so I'm definitely checking it out now.

still regret plowing through Log Horizon's terrible fanslations before the official localization got announced.

Has Prison School become the 'War and Peace' of manga?

It's better!

Monster Musume looks pretty generic to me. Like any number of other smutty near-hentai. Doesn't begin to approach the refinement of the art of Centaur's Worries.

That's fine. I mostly like it because of the facial expressions and little background details. Centaur's Worries is good too, probably better.

I've checked around and there's still no translation, sadly. :(

Aw, I actually thought someone would've picked it up by now.

Kono Shima ni wa Midara de Jaaku na Mono ga Sumu 11

You know, I actually forgot there's one more survivor on that night. Looks like more plot on the island next chapter.

"plot"...

:p

Started losing interest in Kono Shima as soon as the protagonist started getting comfortable with those psychopaths. It's hilarious that it took that many chapters for the other girl to even be brought up.

Yeah, it's not very good lol. I like the art, but that's about it.

I just needed something to read while I'm procrastinating on school work. lol

I might drop it. I also dropped that weird Tower of whatever manga because it was just too weird.

He's downtrodden at the beginning in the MMO world, but from the hints of his past that have come up, he was actually pretty satisfied with his former life. His brother was the family favorite, but he he didn't seem to mind. Despite the fact that he's managed to rise from persona non grata to powerful, influential nobleman, he still has no interest in staying once the waves are done with. And the rape accusation intentionally exacerbated his hatred because that's what activates the Curse series on his shield. It's a plot point that when a hero becomes emotionally traumatized enough, his weapon becomes tainted with a Curse series of abilities. This becomes a plot point for the heroes in general, not just Shieldbro.

And like I said in a previous post, Shieldbro sees Raph as a daughter, to the point that he somehow didn't even notice that her body had "leveled up" with her until it was pointed out to him. I don't know how far you got into it before dropping it, but he also reclaimed her abandoned hometown village and bought a bunch of her childhood friends just so she'll have a place to belong to after he returns to Earth. He also trains and levels all of them so they can fight against the waves if they so choose, because he's a utilitarian antihero on the whole, doing whatever he thinks is required to beat the waves. He constantly acknowledges as much.

I'm just saying that he's a more complex character than some guy who gets betrayed by a girl and goes full wharrgarbl.

We're all evil assholes, at least judging by the tone shoujo beat uses http://officialshojobeat.tumblr.com/post/113315759344/about-manga-acquisitions-part-2

  • uploaded illegally
  • pirate site
  • many people who read illegal scanlations
  • people who steal manga by reading pirated scans

Their editor is such a great person:

Except ANN pulls the same crap with stealing magazine content early for profit. *sigh*

Listing views something gets online as though that is somehow relevant to 'lost sales' always seems confusing to me. I mean, that stupid korean song has a billion views on youtube but that doesn't mean a billion unique people watched it, or that the viewers enjoyed it or that the song should sell a billion copies or something. Always just seems like a pointless metric.

If they want manga to sell better, they need more retail presence, and more advertising. Also, it hurts that manga in the west is much more expensive than in Japan. 12 dollars~ recommended retail price for say Yotsubato, meanwhile in Japan it is like 650 yen. Or you could pick up the weekly Shounen Jump for just 255 yen.

As it is I think the only people that are going to buy a lot of the manga, are people that are already big fans of the series via scanlations/anime/etc.

Yeah. I've rarely ever just picked up manga in the US off of whim. The prices make it hard to do that unless I'm already a fan of the series.

Any time I did, it was probably because of Borders and their coupons back in the day.

I really want to buy all of Ah My Goddess someday, but the price is a lot for me to consider right now.

Any long series is pretty daunting especially at American prices.

I wanted to get Ah My Goddess or Detective Conan but always get reminded how much it would actually cost and how much room it'll take.

Detective Conan was another one that I really wanted to get too. I almost did during that rightstuf sale, but refrained.

As for Shiori Experience, I find it interesting that the summary actually mentions she's 27. That's the year that's known for a lot of musicians dying. I haven't read it, so I'm not sure if that's a foreshadowing plot point or if it's just to make her match Hendrix.

It's like how FOX complained that no one watched "Wolverine: Origins" because they all watched it online, people didn't watch the movie because it sucked, word of mouth a reviews all said it sucked. Like you point out, it's not really a relevant metric. Just because you'd consume something for free doesn't mean you'd pay money for it. There's movies I've seen on TV that I'd never spend any actual money on, I just watched them because I was bored.

Not only retail presence and a better price point, but in more formats. Like, I'd buy all of the Spice and Wolf novels if they had e-book versions, I don't have room for the physical books, but they don't offer it so I don't buy them. I'd spend the money if they'd gimme the damn product. Not that I'm saying I've read them illegally, I honestly would have no idea where to even look.

Assassination Classroom 129-130

Another thing is that, whether they like it or not, they need to realise they are competing with scanlations.
If you release volume 1 of Manga B, like 2 years after said volume has already been scanlated into English, then what are you doing? Even if your service was free, it is still a worse service because you are translating what is already translated, and releasing it at a much slower pace. Any body who might've been interested in buying the volume, have already read it. And unless they were huge fans, they are not going to buy what they've already consumed.
Take services like Crunchyroll. I don't use it myself so I may be wrong, but I believe they release subtitled shows like, the same day as they air in Japan, and at good quality. That's what these manga localisation groups need to be doing.
Maybe they should try more manga that hasn't been scanlated already (there are lots) or they should try releasing volumes/chapters within days of their Japanese release.

they should try releasing volumes/chapters within days of their Japanese release.

Crunchyroll and Viz are doing this to a certain extent, but it's an unproven service and the realities of DRM basically being needed to get any kind of licensing deal done has left both CR's manga service and Viz's English WSJ services kind of in a weird position. Flash-based reading in a browser is unwieldy. I put up with it, but plenty of people refuse to.

I also have a sinking suspicion that CR's service isn't doing well because they stopped trying to charge extra for it on top of the anime membership, meaning it wasn't driving subscriptions so they're making it cheaper to try and induce more hits. Part of this from my perspective is a lack of content I care about but they have a few and I do read them on their service. Same with Viz; I don't read a lot of Jump manga, but I'm fine with reading what I do on their service.

It can work, but it takes time to build up licensing relationships and finding a working market model. No one flipped a switch and made almost every anime being broadcast in Japan available legally in English in short order overnight. It took years of Crunchyroll and other companies building relationships to get those licenses before we got to where we are today.

Well having an uninteresting, non-character main character I don't think is a good thing even if they aren't the draw so to speak. With regards to the Prison School comparison, I only bring that up because its a manga that is lauded for its art. Like with any visual media like comics, animation, games, film, etc. we all have and likely will continue to consume products we can all admit are critically flawed (bad writing, bad characterization, etc.) but still like because the art/animation is amazing. For as shitty a game as the Order 1886 may be, it still looks great. Monster Musume, IMO of course, doesn't even have that. As I said before, nothing about the art style stands out amongst the sea of similar titles. The art and designs are all super boring/"safe". 10 minutes on Deviantart/Tumblr return stuff like:

Obviously if these were for a monthly manga you'd have to lose the color and maybe simplify all these designs a bit more but those are all WAY more interesting and have more personality than what you actually get in Monster Musume - I'd probably actually read that hypothetical manga just for the art from any of the examples I posted.

Note, I'm not trying to throw shade on those who do like it. People can like things that I don't like. I personally don't think the manga has that many redeeming properties after taking a bit of time to look into it - the fact that it seems popular is just weird to me.

A LOT of Monster Girl art , even very good art, is NSFW. Made getting examples a bit of a pain :/

Monster Musume is just a vehicle for people to get access to their monster girl tits. The protagonist is literally self-insert the character and there's the fact that the last few chapters about how badly some of the girls + their moms totally want to do him. I don't think there's much else to say.

I don't get what's different about the examples you posted, they just have more accessories. The first harpy one is cool though. I don't think any of those designs would fit the series or any other harem-smut series any better except for the second lamia.

The plain and standard designs work fine.
