Well having an uninteresting, non-character main character I don't think is a good thing even if they aren't the draw so to speak. With regards to the Prison School comparison, I only bring that up because its a manga that is lauded for its art. Like with any visual media like comics, animation, games, film, etc. we all have and likely will continue to consume products we can all admit are critically flawed (bad writing, bad characterization, etc.) but still like because the art/animation is amazing. For as shitty a game as the Order 1886 may be, it still looks great. Monster Musume, IMO of course, doesn't even have that. As I said before, nothing about the art style stands out amongst the sea of similar titles. The art and designs are all super boring/"safe". 10 minutes on Deviantart/Tumblr return stuff like:

Obviously if these were for a monthly manga you'd have to lose the color and maybe simplify all these designs a bit more but those are all WAY more interesting and have more personality than what you actually get in Monster Musume - I'd probably actually read that hypothetical manga just for the art from any of the examples I posted.

Note, I'm not trying to throw shade on those who do like it. People can like things that I don't like. I personally don't think the manga has that many redeeming properties after taking a bit of time to look into it - the fact that it seems popular is just weird to me.

A LOT of Monster Girl art , even very good art, is NSFW. Made getting examples a bit of a pain :/

Actually, I am a... (aka Jitsu wa Watashi wa)

Alrighty, let's start reading this. Been hearing good things and seem some damn funny pictures linked in this thread so far. Thoughts so far:

  • I like the premise: the boy who can't keep a secret must keep one, while the girl who is nothing but secrets loses her biggest (to said boy).
  • The boy's posse are great and his friend with glasses might be the best romcom support character yet. I always prefer when main characters have actually friends outside of his harem.
  • The volume art doesn't really match the chapter art so far so I'm expecting an art shift pretty soon.
  • The comedic take on vampires is great. I'm hoping they keep playing all the vampire issues as minor hinderences at worst.
  • The main girl was initially being portrayed as a lonely stoic girl but they seem to be dropping the stoic part pretty fast. Not sure how she was getting away with her reputation for so long with THAT personality laying underneath it all.

I don't get what's different about the examples you posted, they just have more accessories. The first harpy one is cool though. I don't think any of those designs would fit the series or any other harem-smut series any better except for the second lamia.

The plain and standard designs work fine.

I mean some of them are certainly more complex (the Harpies more so than the Nagas which I don't think are that much more complex) but stylistically its like night and day as far as I'm concerned. I especially like the first Naga. I think the premise - a romantic comedy with a one dude and a bunch of monster girls inherently has potential but MM is aimed so squarely at.....teenagers? (or just generally someone way younger than me?) that it's hard to get on board. If all the characters acted like reasonably intelligent, interesting, actual adults (and again the art was less "plain") I could find it appealing but alas I guess. Again, just my opinion.

No you :p

I actually like all but the very first on. Especially the Lamia one.

this is why i love manga, so many unique concepts:

Shiori Experience

"What happens when a regular female japanese teacher gets taken over by the ghost of JIMMY HENDRIX!?"

last one don't wanna overwhelm with to many images

in it's 3rd volume!
I think recognize this art style.
Can somebody explain to me the appeal in Monster Musume? Out of morbid curiosity I checked a bit of it out and all I saw was:

  • Milquetoast, everyman male protagonist who is interchangeable with a million other limp dick protagonists in anime/manga
  • Girls with little in the way of personality who fall head over heels for the MC when his only redeeming character trait is literally that he is a nice guy
  • Some of the most unoriginal, bland takes on Monster Girls I've ever see. I could find more interesting and original takes on Harpies, Centaurs, Nagas, etc. if I closed my eyes and randomly selected an artist from Deviantart, Tumblr and/or Pivix.
  • An artsyle that does nothing to standout amongst a sea of manga/comics/whatever in similar genres
Is it just the boobs? Because plenty of other manga do a better job at providing fanservice. I mean if the manga looked like Prison School that would be one thing but it looks so stereotypical! Mediocre characters & bland art - what a "winning" combination!

The lack of competition, that's why.
Your bulleted list pretty much what makes me still only read Centaur's Worries as my monster girl fix (perhaps someday I'll read Monster Musume). But honestly, Centaur's Worries is a cute (monster) girl doing cute thing (except the snakes), so it might be not too different in that regard. I think the relationship between monster races (not just girl) could be very interesting, but rarely any fiction tackle that on satisfyingly even on video games where in Japan fantasy tropes is pretty much everywhere.

ur bant 4eva from my tumblr ;___;

it's really not hard to understand why people like monster musume, it's your standard harem romcom with even pervier shit going on and monster girls out the wazoo all with hilarious yet cliched personalities. it's great, if you know what you want out of it

Asahi and the other characters changed a lot as well, it's more about the art style getting better than making her moe.

WOW. Guess I wasn't wrong about the art shift. It's hard to tell that's the same artist, let alone the same characters. Even the main dude looks completely different (that's the main dude, right?)

Yea, the art style drastically improved as the series went on.

I was kidding about the title, but he did made everything cuter. I like the art change though.

Worst art development is in Ah My Goddess!

I loved the art 3/4 of the manga. Hated his artstyle near the end.

Not only cuter, some characters were made more evil.

Everyone's a lot more expressive in general after the art shift.

If I remember right he wasn't even drawing it anymore at the end, only writing it. The art takes a nosedive after this happens.

I want to assume that's just a really bad shot lol. I can't imagine him making that eyes that small for all of his panels.

I do agree about liking the art 3/4th's of the manga. It's what I remember most at least.
Can't say about the last fourth since I haven't finished it yet.

still regret plowing through Log Horizon's terrible fanslations before the official localization got announced.

The only thing I regret is now the fan translations have stopped, or at least ones I have access to. Now I have to wait years for yen to catch up.

But thats emblematic of my feelings on official light novels. They are too slow, and with basically one publisher doing them all its only going to get slower. Thank god I'm not reading the Index saga with its 40 volumes. it will take a decade for yen to catch up if the ever do.

Honestly, going back and jumping chapter to chapter, while he keeps improving, the general shift does happen really quickly. Asahi is the slowest to change, in part because his change is almost as drastic as Youko's, but Youko's eyes start getting bigger by the end of the first volume. By the time volume two ends, the general art style is there even if he continues to iterate and improve upon it, with the bolder lines and more drastic expressions coming after that point.

It's managed well, though; subtle enough changes that I had honestly forgotten that the series started out looking that much different. (And again, to be fair, the shift starts so quickly that you don't get enough time to get used to the lankier, more realistic designs.)

Always interesting to see when a mangaka changes their style a lot over the manga.

Shaman King early on looks way different than the later stuff.

The Circumstances Leading to a Certain Magical Heavy Zashiki Warashi’s Simple Killer Princess's Marriage 1

A crossover manga of Kamachi Kazuma's various works. Should be at least slightly amusing. I'll probably miss out on some jokes/references from not knowing anything about A Simple Survey or A Simple Monitoring and from my very limited knowledge of The Circumstances Leading to Waltraute's Marriage but I'll mangage. Looks like Touma is going to be the main character to the suprise of no one. First chapter was just showing all the characters from the different series appearing in some mysterious place. Also that's a fucking ridiculous title.

iM@S Million Live 1-2

First iM@S manga that I'm actually reading since I usually stick to the games or anime. The art's actually very good, I like it. Captures the style while having that manga look at the same time too. Mirai joins and gets introduced to everyone else, and you can see some of the envy/jealousy that Shizuka has over Mirai.

You might want to check out the iM@S manga by Mana. It follows the same canon/continuity as the anime, and is pretty much a bunch of short stories for each character.

You have no idea, the series is more insane that anything you can imagine. Come, bask is the glory of the great god-troll.

What are you up to anyways?
Aizen is in this?!

Mostly working, chilling and, at the moment, reading manga when I should be sleeping. So you know, the normal lol.

Looking at it, the art looks pretty good. Following that continuity makes it easier to start too.
Guess I'll check it out later this week.

Looks like Asahi's coming back right after that yandere arc. Not the best girl (I actually don't have one in this) but her arc was memorable. Such a crazy first target that the Aunt chose.

...that is a ridiculous title, I guess I"ll read it.

Haven't read A Simple Monitoring, but A Simple Survey was basically some college students doing a survey by watching movies(each chapter was a different one). And then a choose-your-own-ending revealing a different mystery that different students focused on.
Waltraute's Marriage...probably all you need to know is a little boy falls in love with a Valkyrie and everyone gushes about how cute he is.

EDIT: I guess I've read it now. Not sure, at all, about how it'll turn out.
Also, while I've read a little of all the series involved, I'm not sure I've even heard of Killer Queen and Deep End.
I also realize I, totally, didn't remember the name of the pilot in Heavy Object.

Lol that's pretty much all I knew about it. At least I know I'm not going to be missing out on much from A Simple Survey.

Voynich Hotel 66

GraxFmS.jpg

Wondrously bittersweet. I don't think I'd call the last six or so chapters of this series Voynich Hotel at its' most zany - far from it, but all the same, these past few chapters have been some of the best yet, and really exemplifies Voynich's greatest strength - its' characters, a carefully tended investment that pays off in full as this series reaches the end. From the heroic, in Leader and Vixen's sudden dilemma, to the more bitter end of the spectrum with Snark and Alice. How even the most reprehensible character in the entire series had something sincerely human about her - even if she needed to borrow something to help her admit it. And just seeing how much Alice has grown is... it's nice, no asterisk needed.

And of course, Taizou's past finally catching up with him. That was... rough. Like holy shit. But a fantastic point of punctuation to the love that Taizou and Elena share. Even when she's not there, Taizou's connection with Elena still managed to keep him alive (realizing that his now rightmost heart was an actual plot point as opposed to just some quick gag was amazing), and of course, while she's there... well, those Yakuza got what was coming to them. Their relationship is just... comforting. This fundamentally stable thing. Oh, and I have to mention, this one of my favourite pages of the entire series.

There's an encouraging kind of optimism at the heart of the Voynich Hotel. I don't think I'd ever call this a healing experience or anything like that, but in spite of everything, I'd feel comfortable saying it's ultimately... kind of feel good.

I'm saving the last(?) chapter for tomorrow. I don't want this series to end. :(

One thing that's certain is that Dowman Sayman really solidified himself as one of my favourite mangaka. I'm glad there's a decent body of work of his I can read once Voynich is over.

You know that there's not an Italian or Spanish in his mid-late 20s around when no one wants wants to talks some good old Saint Seiya :/

...

oh wait!

:D
It's Kuramada aka it's exactly like the first series, it depends on you how you want to classify it.
I was raised on French dub with an awful Polish voice over. :p

Hah, I suppose I wouldn't recommend OG Saint Seiya as an honestly good work (though I've only seen it in the anime format) but my nostalgia goggles are strong. It can't be worse than Omega anyway and I've watched that atrocity till the very end.
