Mario Kart World |OT| See that mountain? You can drive to it.

Let all listen to IGN.

Or lets just carry on ignoring their bullshit.
To be fair, a lot of the previews have said the same thing about the free roam.

I just hope it's because they played a few hours and not more.

If they literally called this Mario Kart World just for the world to disappoint then that would most definitely be a huge fuck up.

Its Mario Kart but more. Im not worried in the slightest. Gameplay was perfected many iterations ago.

We all know exactly what to expect.

My copy just shipped from Walmart!

It was originally scheduled to arrive on Friday, now it's coming on release day. Pretty pumped.

Yeah. For some reason, my Walmart order is doing nothing. I think it is going to be delivered straight from the store. So, hopefully that doesn't screw up.

My Nintendo order with the bundle is coming straight from the source way over in WA. It is going to have to travel all the way to the Midwest.

I assume it will be by plane. Pretty amazing for free shipping.

I think I'm just going to drive around and do missions for the first couple of hours and take in/try to find all the new music. Crazy to think they've included +200 tracks in this.

I will be exploring the world to death...

MK8 was the best in the series and it's not even close. Like prior to that I'd say I liked Mario Kart, but even the best would be maybe what, an 8/10, objectively? But MK8 (and Deluxe) is magnificent, it's one of the best games Nintendo has ever made.
Totally agree I played 8 to death on both the Wii U and Switch. I just wanted something a little different this time and I used to love the hub worlds in Diddy Kong racing. So an open world Mario Kart game was a dream come true for me.

There's a bunch of new footage, I just don't see myself ever liking it, it all looks too empty, too flat and it's not because the textures are flat or lack any normal mapping but because there are many tracks which large areas covered by a single texture mostly which in the grand scheme of things makes it look like a large uniformed colored flat section from the distance (you have to look close to see detail).

Then the lighting is way flatter than even MK8 with shadows too bright, like the dev team had some kind of phobia to contrast for whatever reason... And everything IMO is mostly because they have to make tracks way wider to space for 24 racers.

There are some tracks with way more detail density that are basically proof of my assumptions on why the game looks so bland to me. The game looks great in close ups and in some sections like water but in general I feel the whole art direction is a regression from MK8, save for close ups of characters new models.

Oh and the new cars design is also bland af, I preferred the more aerodynamic and aggressive approach of MK8 rather than the "cheerful and safe racing" style of this one...
I think this needs to be seen in person on the actual console. As HDR conversion to SDR can look pretty bad. It's funny because I have thought the same watching some YouTube videos and wondered where the colour has gone. But some videos look as vibrant as ever. In particular the Nintendo Switch direct trailer. Again this will be a little compressed on YouTube but at least it's 4K. This looks pretty awesome on my LG OLED telly and JVC 4K projector. :)

Skill Up said the same thing and his hands-on impressions video showed that firsthand. If anything, I hope they didn't waste developing an uninteresting world when they could have used that time and resources to make more and better tracks. It seems the trade off didn't pay off based on some reviews.

I think it looks like it's the other way around and that the open world is more a result of what they wanted to accomplish with the track designs and how everything is interconnected.

There'll be 100+ track variations/combinations in this game thanks to that design.

That said 'free roam' should definitely be criticized if it's underwhelming, of course.

I always construed free roam to be more akin to something like "free flight" in Pilotwings. Just a way to see the world without the constraints of having to race. More of a bonus than the primary draw.

I do think Nintendo is banking on Knockout Tour being the big hit so it'll be interesting to see if most players just stick to vanilla Grand Prix. If that doesn't take off then the "World" concept might be a one and done.
