Mass Effect 3 Face Import Bug ME1 > ME2 > Nope ME3

oYU6j.jpg

Bioware this is unacceptable.
WHY, why does he look kind of like Brad Pitt in the ME3 pic.

My custom face from ME1 imported perfectly except the wrong hair and eye color, was pleasantly surprised. I didn't customize it in ME2 at all.

That said, I went with default Femshep this time since it's a unique face that IMO looks leagues better than what can (still) be done with the generator.

Playing on 360.

It all feels like those movie sequels where you couldn't hire the original actor, so you got someone who looks pretty much like him, but he's clearly someone else...

It's just so jarring.

Meet Tony Stark's sidekick Jim Rhodes, now played by Don Cheadle!

I am so pissed over this. I guess I have to put a few hours into the character generator because that fan fix seems a bit much for me. I can't play this without MY shep. It's like George Lucas going back 30 years later and adding new scene to Star Wars. Oh, wait...

Mine (from 1) came over from 2 with the right face code, but both the hair and the beard were wrong, but that's easy enough to fix.

Damn! I missed this thread until after I ended up making a new face because I couldn't import the damn face and got fed up trying to make it work. Somehow, my ME3 Shepard unfortunately looks pretty different from my ME2 Shepard and it bugs the shit out of me. Pretty ridiculous for Bioware to screw that up...

I've put about 10 hours into the game so far (work is keeping me from really digging into it), so I'm tempted to start over with my real, proper face Shepard.

Anyway, I tried this out and it works pretty well. Everything looked pretty similar, but I just changed a small number of things. It was pretty much my Shepard..

At a workaround is available for people.

I too had this problem. I had to start the game over a couple times to get the face right--the character creation screen does not give a good preview of what the face will look like in-game--but I eventually got the character to look pretty similar to the previous two games.

I feel pity for those who haven't started playing the game yet (or at least those who are claiming such on the internet) over this face issue. It really wasn't that big of a hassle to redesign the character face. I don't like that the feature is broken, and I'm not approving of shipping a game that is broken, but not playing the game when a suitable workaround exists seems pointless to me.

It looked okay in the editor but like crap in the game. The facial animation of the imported face really started to put me off. Used gibbed new savegame editor to import a newly made face (made from the custom default face, like I did in ME2) into my existing savegame.

it's not suitable enough for me. I'll wait for the official fix and if it is not better MAY BE I'll try playing this.

Kaidan and Ashley look different too, I can pretend that it is a next-gen jump, the number of polygons has increased, so faces are different, lol.

I tried this fan-made tool on the demo.

it looks HORRIBLE. No way I'm playing with that.

edit: may be it's better with the full game? I have uninstalled it already...

Just saw the second post on this thread and found out how to fix imported face from ME1 and facepalmed so hard. I can't believe Bioware made an import function that won't let you bring in your ME1 face. Wasn't the whole point of importing faces is to see the same character in all three games? Bioware seriously dropped the ball in this regard.

You should definitely check out the parts the fan made tool couldn't decipher. For me it was hairstyle, haircolor, beard, nose shape and eyebrows. It's quite alot that it can't decipher, but in the end all of the other facial information was obtained properly and as such my Shepard now looks the way he should. Hair and such are pretty easy to set to the correct thing.

eyes and brows are totally different even though they are deciphered correctly. Also the general shape is slightly off.

I think there is a reason why we couldn't get the code of ME1 face in ME2. They managed to import raw data in ME2 so they should do the same here.

I've been playing around with the demo and my xbox save while waiting for my game to arrive and the skin tone seems hard to replicate too. Essentially because the character customization screen darkens the skin a lot compared to the first scenes and no matter what I do, my Shepard seems either too pale or too dark.

So I switched over to my house mate's PC, downloaded Modio and extracted the save file to the desktop. Tried to upload it to the ME2 Save Editor website and im getting a "invalid save version" error. So now what the fuck.

it seems that it is better to do this manually instead of YAML fix (if you don't want to wait for the patch).

*sigh* was hoping this would be sorted while I was away for the weekend. Funnily enough, I spoke to a friend who works at Bioware on my way out... I LOL at the notion of this being treated with the importance stated in the press... the bug is actually outsourced to EA for them to fix as it was considered "low priority" in terms of the game.

See that I can understand. It's not a gamebreaker, and I can see why they wouldn't treat it as a massive priority (even though on a personal note, it's killing me not being able to use my Shep) just don't smuggle me a suitcase nuke and tell me that slight uranium leak is all in hand...

If this is truth (and I think it is), fuck Bioware. This the last game I bought from them unless they make a timeless masterpiece.

This was really annoying when I wanted to continue the game with my first Shepard that had a pretty unique look I've never been able to re-create.

Though I guess I never imported my NG+ character to ME2 that I used to change some choices in ME1 like I thought I had, so I dealt with it.

Here is mine... ME2 shep had definition in her face, looked almost photo-realistic at times... ME3 shep looks like a 3D animated version of her former self.

Maybe Bioware will fix this issue by the time I re-beat (save filed VANISHED from my Xbox) ME2.

Though if they do I hope I can tweak my face... my failed take on Liev Schreiber in ME1 is starting bother me more and more as I re-play ME2. I tried to make myself and he turned out to look like a bad clone of Liev Schreiber.

I didn't expect anything of this magnitude to happen to my beloved ME series, but I did expect things to go somewhat downhill for BW since being aquired by EA. I absolutely hate that EA is associated with the ME brand. It makes me feel dirty.

PS: Suprised that there is no specific thread about BW charging actual money for the recruit, veteran and spectre packs in MP. That is down right criminal and smells like EA all the way.

That's one I don't get, why did they remove facial features in this version of the character creator? My ME1/ME2 Shepard doesn't have his scar in ME3 like yours.

Why would they do that?
Because they fully regenerated his body in the start of ME2? Scars weren't kept in that, just look at those screens again, and I distinctly remember losing my scar in ME2. Seriously, it'd make no sense to recreate scars when regenerating from a lump of charcoal.

For anyone who's still reeling at their uglified new generic Shepard, I really do recommend doing the elaborate face import process in the OP, even though it's a huge pain in the ass. Once I finally got it going my wife and I both managed to piece together pretty reasonable facsimiles of our classic Shepards even with the changes in hairstyle options and such. I'll probably try to post pictures tonight.

I feel like those most successful at recreating their Shepard or importing using the PC save tools are all male shepard's. Mine is a female Shepard and the eyes, nose, and hair textures are either radically different or not in there at all. I do think this disproportionately affects female Shepards.

Used the whole upload -> export method, and mine came out pretty close

I might tweak the face size a little bit, but she's close enough to where it doesn't bother me.

Just bring me the head of he who took dark brown eyes out of the game.

Is there really still no official fix? WTF BioWare?!! Using the same character through all 3 games has been a hyped aspect of the ME series -- how could you drop the ball on this?

You don't get one if you imported a face from ME1, and you can't tweak the imported face directly, just accept it as-is (and get no code) or start over from scratch.

Oh really? That insanely sucks. I'm pretty sure you can get the code from ME2 though, just not sure if it works.

IF that's the case, then holy shit why they taking so long

Well, most of the custom characters shown here look like ass anyway. As far as I can tell it either made the characters more hilarious or just as weird looking. No offense to the frankenstein's out there, I messed around with the character creator in Mass Effect and I could only create monsters too.

Also I realize you probably can only take offense to what I said. But for reals we cool.

Yeah them not giving a code for import face pissed me off to no end when I tried that.

What I ended up doing was running ME2 and since it shows your import face just switch between that and the custom until I got them to pretty much match. Then I copied the code and used it in ME3. I got a face pretty damn close a few tweaks here and there and i was off. Was simpler in my opinion then following that fan fix and probably quicker. Took me maybe 15 minutes.

All i know is fuck Bioware this is something that shouldn't be a problem.

The face code of an ME2 character from an ME1 import is very different even if copied/pasted to another ME2 save. It's very strange.

This... was much smarter than the way the rest of us did it. (-_-)

I mostly stumbled on that by a mix of luck and laziness from not wanting to go though what looked like the hassle of the fan fix.

I didn't know that ME2 didn't generate a face code for imported faces. I thought it did so I loaded it up got to the face creation and yelled when I found out it didn't. Noticed that it does show the import and custom one and lets you switch in and out of your custom face while keeping the changes so decided to try that.

Wow, glad I haven't even booted up ME3 yet. This is what I'll be doing whenever I decide to jump in.
