Max Payne 3 Review Thread

Kotaku review "Should you play this game? Yes" - http://kotaku.com/5910100/max-payne-3-the-kotaku-review/

WHY: Because this unrelentingly grim thrill boasts great storytelling, sharply implemented mechanics and inventive multiplayer. It's the total package.

What I played: Finished the Story mode in about 11 hours. Played about five hours of multiplayer modes before the game's release.

Two Things I Loved

Thanks to the stylishly directed cutscenes, I never stopped emotional component to Max's story .
The Kill Panel cutaway sequences when you kill or get killed.

Two Things I Hated

The spacing of save points can be brutal and you'll often have to grind back through rogher sections to get back to where you died.
I got tired of being put in situations where ammo feels artificially scarce. Evevrybody had guns, I should, too.

I just watched the gametrailers review... yikes man yikes.

That was very off-putting. I was interested but I no longer am.

Maybe I'll grab from redbox.

The checkpoints bothered me to no end in GTA IV. Without spoilers -- how do the achievements/trophies look for this game? Difficult?

I love how the human brain works; it's fascinating.

They managed to make it look like it had some pretty glaring problems. Especially eye opening since they seemed to get a video exclusive review.

I have the right to not buy the game.

To each their own.

Stunned that it's as good as it is by reviews. Totally flew under the radar on this game, and now I'll probably pick it up after the strong endorsement from polygon.

The checkpoint issue keeps popping. I have a huge pet peeve when it comes to checkpoint. I think that's the dealbreaker right there. I'm hoping the GB QL goes up soon.

Too bad the checkpoint system can't be patched. I'm thinking along the lines of Burnout Paradise getting a restart button.

why do people watch GameSpoiler's reviews?

I don't watch. I listen.

No -- I believe you. It's just that our brains naturally tend to give more wait to negativity and threat than we do to positiveness and praise. It's an evolved mechanism; rampant here as it is every review thread.

What would you say their biggest complaints are?

(this is not a boycott clicks thing, trying to avoid any and all spoilers)

I'd like to know too - I didn't realise how often they do that so stopped watching.

If it is indeed scathing, then they should not give it a 7.6 or completely overhaul their review scale.

I love the sound of the checkpoint system, love the feeling of having to take good care or you will get thrown way back. Hate these new-age checkpoint system where it saves every time you blink.

About the whole GameTrailers thing.. and their reviews in general. Did anyone ever take their reviews seriously? You can call it a boycott or whatever, but why waste time checking out their reviews? From the one's I've seen they usually list a lot of complaints, then still give the game a high score, or the opposite and praise the game for nearly the whole review, then give the game like a 7.

I wanted to see a review overlayed with video.

I'd like to see the GB quicklook if possible.

Funny how this GT hate is coming out when they JUST gave a game certain users are looking forward to a less-then-spectacular score.

I'm sure that's all coincidental, though.

From my experience, GT has been no more or less "reliable" with their reviews than any other site; meaning if I were to apply the same viewing standards elsewhere, I'd never watch reviews.

MP is the reason to play. They loved it. Loved the maps, loved the perks, just hated the massive level grind to unlock stuff.

SP they were pretty down on. Writing didn't evoke much motivational empathy towards Max Payne, his new situation, setting, etc... The action sequences had a lot of rough issues, such as bullet-time hitching on and off unreliably(shooting out windows showed as an example). Enemies become greater bullet-sponges as the game wears on, to the point of absurdity and frustration. Fine-aiming can be rough for head shots. Collectibles often got in the way of the pacing and progression for those that care.

I can deal with this in the Souls games.. I don't want to deal with it in my shooters.

And another negative from kotaku:

I got tired of being put in situations where ammo feels artificially scarce. Evevrybody had guns, I should, too.

Sounds cheap.. This isn't a survival horror.. Ammo scarcity in a shooter? In this day in age. Come on!

I remember playing the original Max Payne with an itchy finger on the "Quick Save" key. I would often quick save right as a bullet was coming towards me, and I would die. Then I would spend like a minute quick loading that exact save to attempt to shoot dodge out of the bullet's way to survive. Fun times. Haha.

I hate that many cutscnenes. But for this game, i decided to realy sit them out and listen to open myself up to the story. If this should fail, i can still shoot people in the head in bullet time and watch them fall in glorious euphoria.

Didn't seem to like much of anything about the campaign. "Distracting" cut-scene style, tiresome story, repetitive action sequences, bla bla.

The multiplayer definitely carried that score, because that's where most of the positive comments in that video were based on. I mean, one dude not digging it isn't going to deter me from playing this game, but they still seem like valid complaints.

Yeah, I really don't have that big a problem with GT. It's nowhere near as bad as something like Kotaku or something in my eyes.

That's funny, because I expected the SP to be amazing, and the MP to be fun, but mediocre, like previous Rockstar games. (I enjoyed RDR's multiplayer, but I don't think I would have called it great.)

gonna watch GT review in a minute but just read IGN's and I am not sure how they score it a 9/10.

From reading the review I wouldnt think it is a 9/10 game at all.

What's the difference, why does one warrant it while the other one doesn't? Just because a game features guns doesn't mean it has to be a Call of Duty speed run fest.

Guess it's just the good ole' matter of opinion.

Thanks. Very interesting. A few reviews praising the story and not the multiplayer, others doing the reverse.

It's cool that they liked the multiplayer. I think it looks pretty fun. Hopefully I enjoy the single-player more than they did, but we'll see.

R* reverse tax.

We all want something to tide us over until the next GTA.

What platform are you getting it on?

Watching it now, some of the complaints seem like similar situations from Max Payne 2, and about the controls...well I never played a console version of Max Payne, so I cant comment on whether or not they are better.

NeoGaf is seriously a weird place. People pick the lowest scoring reviews out of a ton of positive reviews, focus on the negatives and multiply it by 50 - Then make the game sound like a 2/10 game made by a 3 man crew in Poland.

If a game is not unanimously loved, it CANNOT be good! I don't understand how normal variation works!

Lol watch IGN's UK video review if you dont want to be spoilered to hell and back before you've played the game, and want a good review :).

Any word on the difference in quality between 360 and ps3?
I'm thinking it will probably be better on the 360, but i do have more friends on ps3....

The game might suck for all I know, I'm still not sold on the bald in Brazil aspect. Regardless I don't go to reviewers at all to form an opinion, I've listened to enough podcasts to know that I can't put much stock in the way they have to play games out of necessity.

Wait, what am I doing in a reviews thread then? Guess the "Max Payne" part of the title drew me in.

Bullet time is more risk than reward, enemies become bullet sponges later in the game, the story isn't very good, and the cut-scene style sucks balls. That is all according to GT. Pretty clear.

If you didn't use it properly, this was also true for the old Max Paynes, i remember getting killed a lot for that reason.
The other complaint sucks though. :(

I'll still buy it D1, as i'm more interested in the shooting than the story, but i've always said that this smelled more of R* than Max Payne, narrative-wise.. oh well.

Even if it got straight 10's, it still has Bald Bro Max and not enough Noir York. I think people are trying to convince themselves the game is not worth getting, since they spend too much money on games in general.

haha yeah probably. Did you guys hear about "Old School" mode yet? It's basically hard mode and they take out the ability to take cover. You only unlock it after beating the game on hard.

HOT DAMN :D.

Lower reviews are better in the long run GAF game. Super high review scores lead to tons of bashing/game is overrated threads in the next year. Realistic review scores like these will cause to game to be viewed in a better light in the future.
