Max Payne 3 Review Thread

I'm really pumped that this game isn't another 4 hour shooter and is actually challenging. I'm really hoping for some replayability. I loved that mode you unlocked once you beat MP2. Was it New York Minute? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But you could shoot down a endless supply of enemies until you die. When I was a kid that awesome to me. I loved the combat.

Dead Man Walking. Don't think it's in this one, sadly. Payne Killer is probably the replacement for it. An offline survival mode would've been awesome.

That is a shame. I probably won't be jumping into multiplayer right away but hopefully the story can keep me coming back then. Rockstar usually delivers on my "cravings" if you will.

Odd that the reviews are slightly low. Reviewers lap AAA stuff up.

Waiting for gaf impressions as always.

With your avatar, they fucking better.
I'll just say this; if RDR and MP3 are any indication of how the combat gameplay will be in GTA V will be I'm going to splooge. I'm a huge Rockstar fan and they always deliver quality in my opinion. I'm still hoping for a Manhunt 3.

Not that my post will make an iota of difference or even get read amongst the hundreds of posts here, but these days I tend to avoid games that get flat 9-10 scores across the board, because it almost always means they're superficial ratings.

Give me a game that gets 6-7s, with the very rare 9 which, more often than not, echoes how I would eventually feel.

...aaaaand now Im starting to think about Manhunt with RAGE and Euphoria....fuuuuuuuuuuuu

I think that Manhunt is dead for good, but if The Warriors was anything to go by, dead IPs with small cult followings aren't necessarily the end when Rockstar is involved.

This is why you get the game day 1 before people go insane over the content. I still have version 1 of San Andreas for PS2. Got it day 1. Rating changed to AO.

Unless a force patch is issued or something crazy like that.

But hey, Manhunt 3 would be awesome. The previous two were pretty neat games. And Manhunt 3 would also probably linear, so we're talking visuals on the level of Max Payne 3. That'd be awesome.

BANNED IN EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.

Dude from everything I've seen from Payne and even the reviews have stated that this is pretty fucking violent. I mean slowed down point blank shots to the eye socket to see the brains splatter from behind in slow motion? Can't be much worse than suffocating someone with a plastic bag and then beating the shit out of them.

This is the worst review thread ever — and by that I mean the first post is terrible. Stick around next time and update it and shit, dude!

I prefer the first game. The second is definitely more brutal and is still fun but the story is
just a giant mindfuck (in reality Danny could have just went his own way at anytime after escaping the hospital)
. I liked it better in the first game when your character was put in the situation to kill or be killed.

Also, Bryan Cox.

I don't think that either Manhunt title would qualify as a good game, but the atmosphere in the first one is nigh-untouchable.

I never played 2 and I really need to. I loved the original to pieces and it got so fucking good (like slightly evolved gunplay from San Andreas good) for that final 1/3. Sorry to de-rail.

Back on topic....

Yes. He made "exploding in your pants after watching someone die brutally" cool.

Edit/Addition: I think they're good games. Maybe the stories could be a bit better but I liked the stealth gameplay. But gunplay did kind of take over in the last half of the first game. Manhunt 1 on the PC is the best just for the controls alone.

Yeah, these are about what I expected from reviews based on what I've played. It's not perfect, but no Max Payne game has ever been.
What Max Payne 3 does is merges the old school gameplay with the new (Uncharted), and it does it quite well. The only faults in comparison to the originals that I can think of are that there is less strategy to painkillers and that the writing isn't nearly as good, in my opinion. The story is pretty much standard MP fare, but I'm not going to get into that because I don't like to spoil people.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you're a Max Payne fan, you can't possibly be disappointed with Max Payne 3.

Also, Rockstars Manhunt did Pop n Cover before Gears

Fact.
So did Kill.Switch before that I believe. I think some of the guys who made that game went over to Epic.

And they recently just pulled Manhunt 2 from PC which is a shame. I wanted it. It was download only, though. It was uncensored and AO of course.

THANK FUCK they don't have those stupid screen effects when low on health. Fucking hated that in Red Dead. Yes, I know I'm low on health, don't fucking make it worse by limiting my vision with this red FUCKING screen.

Yes. I hate that more than just about anything. I end up dying sooner because I can't see shit. No, that doesn't make it more realistic, it makes it more annoying. Obvious that some feel different in here, but I never thought I would see supporters of that mechanic.

Man, who knew Max Payne of all series could bring out such ugliness.

Anyways, the reviews are about in line with what I've expected. A Rockstar-quality™ shooter that's competently designed, but lacking Remedy's unique touch, which was what made Max Payne 1 and 2 so weird and special. It's something you can't replicate, although I'm not sure if Rockstar had any intentions of doing so in the first place. I might buy it when it comes out for PC, but now I'm feeling like playing the original Max Payne games again more than anything else.

Watched Gametrailers review and I can see where they are coming from. Was surprised it was below an 8 but won't hold it against them. They has very solid and logical reasoning behind their positions. Parts of the game do look really annoying and poorly planned out.

Good for them for not getting caught up in the hype while also not being overly malicious with the score. (below a 7.5 or 7 and I would be upset)

Hahahahaha, yeah, like jessica chobot, am I right?

LOLOLOL, we have the movies and series here dubbed by great dubbing actors that some of the time even superpass the original voices, and that is THE actor you are watching in screen, not a shitty 3D model suppose to be him, thats most of the time when they try to do that in videogames.
Things are dubbed here ALWAYS (apart from videogames, and those are dubbed also a lot), all media. We have great dubbing actors that are as capable as normal ones, and in my country some of them have their famous voices so linked to famous american actors, and are so good, people LOVE them.
Even like that, videogames are more like and cartoon and it doesnt mean shit theyve get someone to recreate mildly their face for a character, most of the time they dont evn look the same, so having a different voice makes your point moot.

If you dont want to hear voices in the shitty dubs done by you contries play with the original, theres other countries were we have great dubbing actors and we would prefer if the game came dubbed in our language with the option to change it, thank you very much.

As people will allways cry when other people talk about the option of dubbing a game im outta here. You can continue to hate options.

I read this kind of bullshit all the time and no, dubbing is not good.
There are instances where it can be ok, for example cartoons with no complex facial animations, but for the most part, it's just shit.
First of all, the attention to balance of sound is always different (dubbing is often louder and less naturally integrated with the rest of the sounds), lip synch is always off (for obvious reasons) and the actors, however good, are bound to be less well-directed, both for a matter of time (they have less time to study the part and act it out) and logistics (they can't speak with the original director 24/7 while they work, they have to follow another actor's performance etc etc) even in the best case scenario.
I agree that there are some voice actors (i'm from Italy, but i assume it's the same in Spain) that are very good at their job, but dubbing itself is a retarded practice that should die.

There are limited examples i can think of, where the dubbing was better than the original acting (case of particulary terrible actors) but still, there was a terrible disconnect between sound and image, for the reasons above.
This happens less with products (as i said) like say Futurama or The Simpsons, if the voice acting direction is very good, because the facial animations are less complex and the lack of lip synch is less obvious, still, jokes get lost, and you have a direction that however good, it's not the original one, the one closer to the product creatively.

I'd say Max Payne and videogames in general fall in the middle, as they have fairly complex performances and facial animations, but not as complex as movies; that is why dubbing videogames is shit.

Still, i agree that having a choice is always good.. too bad that, often, there are no options due to space limit on the disc, or outright incompetence (GFWL selecting the language for you).

It's the reason why i can't go to the cinema anymore, here 100% of the films get dubbed, it's fucking disgusting.

So the main complaints are that it isn't like Max Payne 1 and 2 right? If that's the case, then it is still a possible buy for me. I never played the first two, so I'll be able to enjoy the game based on its own merits.

Still undecided if it's this or Diablo III though. Which is weird because I've never played the first games in either series.

Oni 2 first I hope.

I want Oni 2 to be an open world cyberpunk game.

Ouch, those gametrailers combat critiques make me sad.

* No seamless taking of cover after a signature jump or roll. Cue slow animation to stand up and expose yourself to fire before then settling back into cover.

* Cut-scenes interrupting play and then putting you back into the action with a different weapon.

* Large scale areas that drive you to play the game as a stop and pop cover based shooter rather than as a Max Payne super action god.

* Later enemies shrugging off bullets like they're nothing. (This is a huge disappointment for me.)

Story stuff is subjective, and I still want to get the game but I may hold off a bit, especially as I have zero interest in the versus modes.

Ok, so I thought this wasn't supposed to happen. I read that the weapon you have equipped will be featured in the cutscene, but they change it afterwards? That makes no sense and breaks immersion for sure.

Also, I hope R* doesn't over do it with the cutscenes. That doesn't make the game more cinematic or better in my opinion. The charm of the original max paynes is world itself and the random things/people in it. We don't need a cutscence to walk up on a dude in the toilet or to walk through doors and find gangsters behind it. Id rather that play out in front of me and leave the cutscenes strictly to the main story elements.

No, you have the same weapons as when you went into the cutscene. The difference is that after the cutscene, it defaults to your right handgun every damn time. It gets annoying for sure, but it's not a case of entirely different weapons. You'll still have your rifle available if you went into the cutscene with one.

As for the enemies shrugging off bullets comment in the post you quoted, it's because they have body armor. Extremely effective body armor.. but they can still be taken down with one well placed shot to the face.

Unfavorable review, more or less.
But all this polish can only sustain your enjoyment for so long when it's punctuated by such repetitive and increasingly frustrating combat. Even on the regular difficulty setting, using Shoot Dodge - the most entertaining thing about being Max Payne - soon becomes impractical due to the weight of enemy numbers and their pinpoint accuracy. We've learned to cope with the occasional balancing issue in a vast Grand Theft Auto game, but the difficulty spikes and checkpointing mistakes in Max Payne 3 betray Rockstar's lack of experience in pure third-person shooters

Honestly, going through MP2 again in anticipation, I was reminded of a time before checkpoints and how some of the things they criticize were present in the older games. I also think they assumed bullet time = shoot-dodge and didn't use the normal bullet time in most situations were you are out numbered, but I maybe wrong.

I hate to admit, but in Max Payne 1, I never used standard bullet time, instead I just shoot-dodged everywhere.

From Eurogamer:
Little niggles quickly start to pile up, too. When cut-scenes finish, the game switches you back to a single pistol, forcing you to fumble with the inventory every time you retake control.

The Gametrailers one mentioned this too. Didn't one of those slick marketing videos promise that the cutscenes would always reflect what kind on gun Max was holding in gameplay?

And enemies take far too many bullets to go down. You can understand them getting back to their feet in body armour - however annoying it is - but when they're wearing shorts and a T-shirt?
welp.

Fumble with the inventory? You hold L1 and tap the stick.

It also doesn't do it every time, I don't think. It's a bit silly, but most of the time during a cut-scene Max gets blown up or thrown through something. Not hard to imagine he's lost his fucking rifle during the chaos.

It's interesting that people have forgotten that MP1 was punishingly difficult in places, certainly compared to MP2. From sifting through all the reviews, common enough complaints seem to be the checkpoints and the overuse of cutscenes to some people. The bullet-sponge thing has been contradicted in reviews.

Can't wait to play this and find all the mistakes they made with the use of Portuguese

It's OK, some of the English is a bit naff too. Some horrible typos in the subtitles - hear/here for example.

Really? Damn.

Do you know if they got actual actors from brasil or did they get american ones and try to make them sound like they're from brasil?
