So, impressions from about 10 hours of gameplay (6% completion I think...)
It's very fucking good.
I think I overhyped the intro for myself. It was really good, a great intro in terms of being a thriller. But it is more a crazy action intro than anything super meaningful (bar a couple of great highlights). It's more Terminator 2 than Inception. Really great though, look forward to playing it again on PC.
The full gameplay thouogh? Wow. I stealthed through the first two proper mission swiftly and unseen, basically skimming the surface. The level of detail and intricacy is amazing. Every area > every valley > every town > every street > every building > every object, from top to bottom it's all fully 3-dimensional and fully realised. The AI and your moveset can interact with all of it.
The Mother Base stuff is flawlessly built in over many hours, so you never feel overwhelmed. I was playing with a friend in the room, who had never played MGS and never seen any of the games. His mind was blown by all of it.
The graphics are wack diddly. The textures still aren't amazing for a lot of the gameworld, especially the ground in middle distance, but the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts, mainly thanks to the lighting. The lighting is unbelievable (bar occasional moments where dynamic shadows are missing).
Personally I'd prefer 30FPS with better simulation – but tbh once you get used to the simulation and normalise to it (like you do in any game), the gameplay is always what's most important. So sure enough the 60FPS gameplay is bloody glorious. I've only had 3-4 moments of slow down and funnily enough they were due to the HUD (the floating 'pick up item' box appearing and disappearing while 6 guys all walk about on-screen). In general gameplay there is no slowdown as far as I can tell.
The stealth is amazing. Best it's ever been.
- camo index simplified and purified- no on-screen arbitrary number, just your colour vs the environment
- light/dark makes an impact but again, no contrived on-screen indicator
- the verticality is unbelievable. I've had guards walk less than 5 feet past me without alert because I was flat to the ground (hold Stance button while prone) and just beneath them under the lip of a ridge
- CQC is great but I still don't love how Snake drags enemies. Makes sense, though
- cover is almost perfect, works all the time, except a certain variety of box (like pallets of boxes covered in dark tarpaulin. Snake does not like sticking to that)
- dynamic events like sandstorms are so fucking cool and totally random
FYI a guard seeing you is NOT instant alert. A guard seeing you and shouting alerts all guards in the vicinity. The vicinity might be a base of 50 guards. It might be a township of 7 guards. It might be a patrol of 2 guards. Vicinity does not mean 'the whole world'. I was spotted in the wilderness by two guards, and the alarm didn't go off. I tranq'd one, and the other crouched down, whipped out his radio, and began shouting for command. I scrambled and got a tranq on him, too, and that was it. No radio call. No alert. I interrogated them both and left them lying face down in a ditch.
But anyway. Story seems really good. Writing is really good. Potentially best in the series - certainly best in terms of pacing. Ocelot is great. Kaz is great. Everything is bloody grand. The side ops are fantastic. Playing Kids of America from your chopper blasting at guys is fantastic. Already had countless classic moments, like:
holding a guy in a choke hold while his teammate patrols 3 feet away, unaware
watching the chopper coming in for landing after you've trekked through a valley, over a mountain, into the middle of a town, and all the way out again, without being seen
popping on Ride of the Valkyries just for a laugh, then being spotted by some random douche and the music turning into a sort of majestic horse-back getaway.
Also the first time you see what happens to your horse when you leave by chopper
Also to those saying there's nothing to do on Mother Base... wat? Once you have a couple more platforms, try exploring a little. You can find side ops, really interesting conversations, diamonds... It's fucking awesome
