Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain |OT2| A Franchise Robbed Of Its Future

As someone who plays MGS mainly for the story. I have the strong sense I'm going to be disappointed :(.

Yeah, well, maybe. It's a phenomenal game though, it is the next big MGS game we wanted... It's just, different I guess, it's not MGS2.5 that's for sure.

I like to knock out bases in side ops, Fulton the high ranks, and execute everyone else with my bolt action sniper.

(I know, I'm probably a bad person.)

Honestly, it's not that phenomenal if what you're used to and expecting is the old games. I think looking back people will really have a problem with this one.

You kinda said it yourself. MGS has always been story AND gameplay. This game seems to stumble pretty hard on stuff that isn't gameplay, while doing the gameplay really well, so I'd say it's definitely a very non MGS like game overall. I'm only about 26 missions in so far, but while I'm enjoying the game I'm definitely somewhat disappointed in the whole package. It'll probably get worse if the ending impressions I've seen in this thread are anything to go by.

Mabey I'm wrong but I feel like there is a lot of story here. It is just presented differently. It is more spread out and the tapes are a must, to get everything out of it. The game wouldn't work if it was presented like past games. This is the first one where I truly feel like Big Boss. It takes time to build an army. Flying into the battlefield and building my army and becoming a legendary soldier works for me in this game. It is PW fully realized. Mgs3 was a great game but Jack felt too much like Dave it was fine for the missions in that game but it wouldn't work for this part of the story and this timeline. I want BB to feel unique, like the ultimate badass and in this game he does. The player has so much agency and it feels great.

I'm liking the story so far and it is definitely the same wacky MG with supernatural characters, political and philosophical undertones, great visuals and awesome gameplay.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.

The problem isn't the story itself, but how sparse it is and how many filler missions there are that aren't side-ops.

Considering how much rose-tinted glasses and nostalgia influence people's opinions on previous MGS games I highly doubt that.

MGS 2's story was atrocious. People are bashing Ocelot in this game, but the very fact that Rose isn't in this game makes it so it isn't a MGS game with the worst characters.

I also don't get the bland enviroments argument. The entirety of MGS 2 takes place on an oil rig(basically motherbase) and 3 mostly in jungles with a single big base and 2 mountain levels. Hell, MGS 1 is probably the MGS game with the most diversity, even though it takes place in one giant base.

Exactly, I see no reason to use any other weapon other than my tranq pistol, a silenced assault rifle, and maybe a sniper, lethal or non-. Always silenced.

If the mission dictates I will bring a fucking rocket launcher. The whole thing seems inconsequential. It's clear the mother base stuff and open-world aspect was more important than the narrative.

As others have suggested I'm gonna try to fuck around a little more in the side ops. But there's very clearly a best way to go about things and it kinda sucks that it's so easy.

Does anyone know what the requirements for an S-rank actually are? I feel like I get most of my s-ranks when I die on a mission or when things go horribly wrong, I never feel like i actually accomplished something super well.

So I just
Rescued the child soldiers
. It was fairly easy. parachute in a vehicle, fill it up, and then fulton it out. Do this twice. No more
escort mission

Got Metal Gear S. down to one hit and then it killed me with its one shot rail gun. I was a little upset needless to say. Also that Jeep ride with Skull Face was amazing, Words that Kill indeed.

Someone else has probably done that before you did but this is the first time I have seen that method. Wow. Well done and I'm not being sarcastic.

If I deploy my combat unit to say, destroy the helmet storage facilities, does that make the enemies in game have less helmets?

I have all yellow side ops done that are available to me. Trying to check the emblem thing but I haven't fiddled with that stuff at all.

Do another mission or 2. Or go to Mother Base. 45 should unlock for you by now.

The order doesn't matter so rest assured you didn't ruin anything. Its just a question now of when the mission unlocks.

It makes jeeps e.t.c spin out. Like the old mario banana peels

D-Horse's poop is surprisingly practical in certain missions, such as Backup Back Down where you must take out as many vehicles as possible. In one instance you have to rescue a prisoner in the back of a jeep and the poop just does wonders for that since the EMP mine doesn't work on jeeps.

that wasn't Rose, and I will not accept a complaint of MGS2 being teh worst oen if you don't understand the characters at this level. sometimes.......

Yeah it's weird it shows up as a grenade throw zone, barely caught it in time to evade.

Should I do more missions or side ops? Also, do you think it's because of the fact I haven't maxed out my bond with Quiet?

Who cares if she is the real one or not, she's the one you spend the entirety of the game with, it's also really great that she's the save lady so you can't completely ignore her, and the exposition dump at the end is one of the worst story pacing issues in the history of video games. And people complain that this game has pace issues.

MGS2 is amazing and the story is the best part

MGS 2 is like the ending of Stephen King's it, throw everything you can think of into the story until you can make the plot work.

I joke a bit, MGS 2 had its cool parts but also its bad parts, just like MGS V, it's just that people tend to ignore them a lot

Sub Zero

his body's cold as ice, but he's got a heart of gold
Not a big fan of the Hand of Jehuty, the range is so small that it becomes useless. Hopefully there will be some upgrades for it that will increase its range. Rocket arm is extremely OP though, cleared a pretty much all of the extreme and perfect stealth missions with S ranks by using it with DD

There is one, but you need to have R&D at lvl 46, so pretty much end game stuff.

Happened to me.
Twice. Because I was waiting on a resupply.
I felt like the Cobra unit rolled into one. The pain, the fury, the sorrow...

That's the reason. Make sure at least once per mission you select you hold L1 and select the Quiet option. It raises Bond.

You can skip any Rose conversation with two presses of triangle. You cannot skip fucking Ocelot or Miller talking.

BOSS. BOSS. BOSS. BOSS. BOSS. BOSS. BOSS.
