Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain |OT2| A Franchise Robbed Of Its Future

I feel like that's more a numbers game though? Like having 30 e rank guys is just as formidable as 30 S rank guys as odds are your going to trigger an alarm against that many guards and have to take them down.

I now understand the grief over mission 16 :(

My two tries last night failed miserably, going in D-Horse I think for the third attempt. Died the first time for stupid reasons, couldn't catch up to the convoy in time the second time with a jeep.

Completing all these mission tasks would be way more fun if I didn't have to worry about sequence breaking and stuff :\ As it is, I basically have to run the mission with the normal stealthy gear that I use and just wait around in boxes for ages.

I just made sure I was on time to catch
the convoy
in the
airport
, used Quiet to tranq/kill everyone with the "Cover Me" command and managed to fulton everything, including
the tanks
..

the most difficult part was to slip through
the skulls
, it was sure death when they saw me, in the end I managed to distract them and fultoned
the convoy
without alerting them.. is was quite difficult

I have kinda been avoiding this thread for fear of casual spoilers and have some very basic/stupid questions if someone wouldn't mind?

Is there a reason why some side-ops are repeatable? There are some extract the skilled soldier missions don't disappear. Also if I repeat these at a higher level will I get a better grade soldier?

Roughly how many main missions are there? I'm over 20 hours in and have only done 15 as I have been doing every side-op that was available. I'm wondering if I should focus on the main missions for a bit, just incase I get burned out.

Should I develop the
walker gear
as a buddy? It looks expensive and loud, but I'm sure it will make missions easier later on if I put the resources into it. I have a maxed out quiet, and I usually bring her.

I have heard some stuff about secret endings, is that something I need to be aware of now or can I worry about that later?

Thanks.

I ranked it with S and did in 3 minutes. If you wanna know how, PM me.

Honestly one of the easiest missions so far as long as you can
Fulton the truck.

Just
approach the airport from behind and hop over the fence right next to the truck. The Skulls will appear but just run up and fulton the truck then sprint right while whistling for d-horse. Jump on while running and gallop to safety
.

Total time around 4 minutes, S rank and not a shot fired.

they are there just as another mean to get more GMP and sometimes to get high skilled soldiers/prisoners

I think people said
50
main missions, but the main story finishes on
30
with the ending of chapter 1, with more complementary additions on the later mission which are chapter 2

if you use her with the tranq gun and like stealthy missions, then no, walker gear is more towards pure brute force

right now, as I heard, no, you need to worry until you finish everything in the main missions, later you can worry about that

Thanks. I think I'll give it a couple more tries and will see how things pan out naturally but if things get frustrating I'll resort to fulton abuse. That was sort of my plan anyway if I could ever catch up to the thing.

what WITHE1982 said was also very smart, but I also used my tactic to break havoc in the airport and destroy their power supplies, the anti-air radar and all the communications, also to get the
Gloria
tape hidden inside one of the buildings, that way I'll have it a lot easier next time I come back there

EDIT: and I even fultoned their anti-air gun

not about where, but about when...

you can do it when you make the upgrade to the fulton device, then you can fulton all tanks/other vehicles you see
Yeah i got that upgrade, i mean where i can find tanks and stuff in the map to steal.

One of the Dispatch missions requires a tank to be completed and i dont have any.

Make sure to just run right to the airport and fulton the truck before it moves out. I'd also bring along a rocket launcher of some sort to make killing the Skulls easy.

Yeah i got that upgrade, i mean where i can find tanks and stuff in the map to steal.

One of the Forward Operating missions requires a tank to be completed and i dont have any.

Just do the side missions that require you to take out a tank crew.

depends in which mission you are, but they start appearing very early on, like on mission
9 or 10

and even then, there are several side ops to eliminate tanked forces, you can fulton them too

My security team is constantly hovering around level 20. I can't get them higher because the Combat team takes up all the good people. Any suggestions? Auto-assign will just kick people that are on security over to combat anyway haha.

I do prefer the 80s action movie "hostage situation" (Die Hard, Under Siege, Sudden Death etc) of MGS 1 over this open world/base management approach.

The 10 side missions in the game being repeated like 15 times each is just fucking padding.

edit: ^^ Yes, the core Gameplay is very strong. I think it's the best Metal Gear game in the last ~20 years and much better than I thought it would be (based on the last couple games), but I can't imagine putting it in goty contention, which is almost always decided by critical thinking and analysis for me. Story, writing, pacing, structure... nothing really holds up under scrutiny.

Without even bringing up past MGS games, I have to agree with your last paragraph.

They took a core nugget of incredible gameplay and stretched it over a game that's too long for it's own good and wrapped it in some really questionable design choices. It's a game that wastes a lot of time. I'd even argue that some of the story beats in Chapter 2 should have happened in Chapter 1 and they should have eliminated about half of the missions in chapter 1. They were pointless filler in a game that already has built in padding with Side Ops.

Should I be selling guns I've fultoned? I know some appear on MB and I think they end up on your FOB too but how do I know which are being used and which are extra? Is there a magic number you should refrain from selling?

Every damn mission S ranked. Not as tough as I had feared it would have been overall, toughest mission was probably 4
2 Extreme Metallic Archea
but even that becomes simple and routine when you have the right equipment and strategy -
camping on the hangar roof with the brennan

I'd be pleased if it weren't for that annoying blueprint glitch locking me out of the platinum.

iDroid -> Motherbase -> Resources. It will list all the materials you own, both processed and unprocessed, vehicles (including Walker Gears), weapons installations, plants, etc. You can sell any of that for GMP.

Yes. Its a tab in the area where you can view your raw/processed resources.

Just don't want to sell them if I can use them. It was also my understanding that only your FOB can be attacked, not MB, so guns on MB seems pointless?

I'm seriously fed up with people going on about the story. Some of the Steam reviews are embarrassing to say the least. The story doesn't matter.

I'm 60 hours in and still don't give two shits about the story, I'm making my own ones up every time I go out to do something. There's tension, hilarity and straight up action hero coolness almost every time. It's more about the sheer joy of playing this game, that's what makes it so good. Just forget the story guys.

You may be fed up with it, but for a series that has historically been so story heavy it could sink a cruise ship from the weight of printed manuscripts of the dialog, MGSV's lack of focus on the story is a massive departure. There's lots of missing links (heh), opportunities to cover characters and events that should be happening around this time completely squandered, and so on.

There is story there, but it's not nearly as detailed as people were led to believe it would be, understandably upset at the results. Polished gameplay is only one piece of the Metal Gear puzzle, the rest happened to be left on the cutting room floor this time. Especially coming from MGS4, which was both a fan's worst nightmare and wet dream for all of the plot elements it tried to tie together.

i stealthier passed the first group of soldiers, then doubled back and killed them all. Then I shot down the chopper with a missile launcher before heading to the next group. Once I got to the next group, I knew from previous attempts that it would be scripted that the guards would detect the kids missing and instant spawn guys in back of me, so I stayed back picking off soldiers until that happened, then turned around and murdered everyone
. Rest was easy

This was after dying 50 times. I still don't know what the better way to do it is

thats nice and all, and im totally with you, there are things here better than the story and enough fun to get over it.

but you gotta think of the series. this is an extremely story driven series, with each and every trailer showing more cutscene than gameplay precisely because its such a story heavy series. plus, this was build as like, the connective tissue that kicks off MGS proper.

to people who were excited about that, its a colossal disappointment. i still LOVE parts of this game, but def not the story.

i took out the group of soliders who are stationed there, sprinted ahead to trigger the soliders in the back spawning, and killed them while looking for the chopper to shoot down.

had to call in a supply drop for a rocket first.

Thanks bud will give it a try, the scripted instant spawn is ruining it everytime at the moment. Maybe staying back will work for me too.

Nice, looks like triggering the spawn first is key to making this easier then. Cheers.

if it makes it any easier, i just gave up on stealth at one point.

you know they are coming, its not like you could of been super sneaky and not alerted the guards the prisonors escaped, so i thought, screw it, im going loud.

I still have the
butterfly
equipped on my emblem. I know that keeps
Quiet's ending
from triggering, but does it halt anything else?
It prevents the final story-oriented Side-Ops
150
from triggering which spills over immediately into Mission
45
. Preventing her departure additionally locks out the ability to unlock the
Raiden costume
which comes from completing all main/story missions with any rank according to the Internet.

By the way, how amazing is the Original Score for this game?

Casette 1 has a bunch of custom-made eighties tracks. "Behind the Drapery" is incredible, haha. Can't stop listening to it, and it blows my mind that those tracks weren't released on the soundtrack.

You must go scout too, but leave the
kids
behind until you're sure that there are no more soldiers waiting for you. Use "cover me" on Quiet ahead of your current location so she can just remove other threats.

Also take your time. Rushing will always get someone killed.

Imagine MGS fans giving a fuck about the story in one of the most prominently story-focused video game franchises in history

The game is a good example of the difficulty of having a set narrative when set in a non-linear open world. Most games of this genre have this problem, and it will probably continue to be a problem.

Obviously there is an audience out there that prioritizes one thing over another and opinions and all, but I don't think you can overlook the issues present (in any open world game, not just MGSV) just because the gameplay is awesome.

For me personally the game is not a 10/10 because of the story. I don't think the game is immune from criticism in this area just because the gameplay is so good. 30+ hours in I'm kinda surprised it didn't impact the score for others more than it did.

olde metal gear died under mgs4's insane hubris

mgsv's story direction is basically a tacit admittance by kojima that the series lore is a byzantine clownshow

It would've been nice if they actually tried to incorporate those tracks into the actual narrative. I was deeply disappointed that "A Phantom Pain" never played once outside of being cycled in Quiet's cell playlist. Not even as an ending credit theme!

Do they really not serve any purpose? I fultoned every single truck I saw.

Unrelated to that, is my mother base supposed to feel so empty? The thing is getting gigantic but it feels like there's about 5 people on the entire thing.

Can someone clarify something with Major Zero that's driving me nuts? When did he become American? Did I miss something in MGS3? I always thought he was clearly British but in an early MGSV tape Oceleot refers to
"David O, an American
. And the whole Chapter 1 plot
has Skullface getting revenge on America when he evidently worked in the CIA with Zero. And Cipher is presented as a Black Ops US Intelligence operation.

So did MGS3 present Major Zero as a Brit who became a US Citizen or is there some kind of weird (even by the series' standards) retcon here?
