Microsoft Conference: Will they Bring It Like Sony Did?

Some of you have this silly idea that MS cares about who gets the better ports, or who wins the technical edge. The reality is they want enough power to get by, and want to be the dominant machine in your living room. Hardcore gamers are only a fragment of their overall message. The conference will be equal Kinnect, services, hardcore games, and connectivity.

You have the silly idea that you're not posting on a gaming forum where gamers care about games and gaming and machines that can play games and facilitate gaming when the games are in them so you can game... game.

Thread isn't called "will MS bring it for shareholders and mass media press and Ellen unlike Sony did?"

Summary of this thread:

OP: "Is Microsoft going to bring it like Sony did?"

Sony fans: "Nah, all they got is Kinect!"

Microsoft fans: "What!? Sony was bad. MS will be better!"

Everyone else: "Where are the Ballmer gifs?"

They better bring it, 2 months + after Sony's event, would mean that Sony would have 2 months+ to organize new content to show (timing whenever they want to) and also mean that whatever MS has to show has to be that much better, otherwise the effect of their unveiling can be easily mitigated/tossed aside by a new Sony unveiling within a short time frame.

And convenience. And they'll bring out someone famous. They're nothing if not predictable. But then again I also think Sony's goals are the same, they're just not willing to say it outright.

How many console reveals do you expect there's going to be?

You might think it's a brilliant tactic to be snide and make awful comparisons, then just claim you were joking when people point out how silly you're being... but you'd be wrong.

Ballmer's words of wisdom.

I hope so, I'd love to be jazzed about all three next gen systems. I have this fear that Microsoft's approach will largely be the opposite to Sony's though, with just a couple of bones thrown to us.

Its a tough and loaded question? I dont believe that they will compete with Sony on this one. Im sure they will try to lure the hardcore gamer in on it but there has to be a multimedia focus on their part as well.

I feel like Sony is the winner as far as the hardcore gamer goes. Time will tell.

Will they bring it like Sony did?

I hope MS impresses.

We know they are working with third party studios on exclusives, such as Alan Wake 2 and Crytek's RYSE. PGR5 was also hinted at.

We also know RARE, Lionhead, and Microsoft Vancouver are working on new titles. And I expect Twisted Pixel and other companies to introduce new XBLA games. Shadow Complex 2 anyone?

After they show off some of those games, I expect they will show some multiplatform games i.e. Madden, Unreal Engine 4, Battlefield, Witcher 3 etc.

They will also talk about the evolution of Xbox Live, the new Xbox OS, Phone/Tablet Integration, evolution of Kinect, etc.

My only question is how much of this they will show off at the Xbox Next Conference, and at the Xbox E3 conference.

Edit: A proper next-gen remade Halo 2: Anniversary would be great. I would love to see that. Frankie pls.

It'll have more Ryan Seacrest. Or whoever they get to agree to be on stage for a wheelbarrow full of cash.

Phil Harrison. Dat Betrayal

Features, games, the actual console since you've been crying about it in every single thread about ps4, etc.

Doesn't take a genius to figure out what I meant in my post.

It doesn't take a genius to know that Sony isn't going to keep scheduling reveals. They'll be at shows, like Microsoft will. Your insistence that Microsoft is harmed by announcing 2 months later is silly beyond words.

It wasn't, it was a snoozefest in places.

I don't think Microsoft's will be any better, hopefully it'll be shorter and less rambling though.

No I am asking GAF to readjust its expectations. If you are expecting a game orgy for an hour and a half, than you will be disappointed. However, if you are smart enough to understand MS is going to court you for your family, than you will appreciate what they have on show.

So what you are saying is that all of the worst fears expressed in this thread are true?

If Microsoft shows PGR5, they will have already won me over! The tradition of having a PGR game at launch of a new Xbox console really should continue.

Fuck Yeah!

They'll have a World 1st unveiling of the console with Kanye West (or some other casual famous A lister) performing live to Just Dance 5. Now with the all new Kinect 2.0!

Just like fucking E3.

And the core gamer dies a little bit more inside.

Or they could bring out these guys and watch the core gamer stand up and applaud

Baconsammy said it in another thread(I think) but he had a point. They are skipping the "hardcore" pandering and going for broke on the mainstream. I'll admit it's risky but if they can pull it off then damn

I believe they have the potential to deliver more than Sony did. It might not be something everyone is that interested in but I feel they'll impress nonetheless.

Everyone's going to have a lot of crow on their face while eating egg when Media Molecule shows how brilliant their idea is.

All it's going to take to do that too, is just giving the tools to some LBP creators, big and small, and then showing people "hey, here's what these normal people made and here's how you can experience it."

And it will be that simple to blow minds. Pretty sad that people can't see the potential or anything not right under their nose, really.

I seriously dont think it's this extreme honestly. The early leak in June stated that they wanted to release AAA core titles at a much higher rate. The hiring of some incredible talent and forming of studios over that past couple of years could definitely back up that statement. The writing really is on the wall if you do a little research and think about it.

It's obvious that they definitely have a roadmap for Xbox that leads to many things other than just pure gaming. But the games will be there as well. Make no doubt it. I really think some people are gonna get smacked in the face by this fact eventually. Mainly those that are thinking there is no gray area between the core gamer vs mainstream media box dynamic.

I'm not buying a console that requires $60 a year to play online and still has advertisements. If they get rid of that nonsense, they'll have "brought it" to PS3 and Wii levels.

Beyond that, make some new games damn it. Halo, Gears, and Forza is not enough.

I don't mean it as full fledge as it sound. I partly think they will show some big stuff off like Fallout 4

I think it will be bigger, with a broader media impact and while it will please hardcore gamers it won't be focused on them. And they'll show the console.

it's a no brainer to show the console in late April. Can they show it now in Feb? No. Not the same, even if I see fanboy pretending like showing plastic shell is so important to them

I cant believe this kinect meme is taking a life of its own here on gaf. If only you guys look at the data, it clearly shows that traditional software sell tremendously on the xbox and not one mainstream ip used kinect from Microsoft.

Sony on the other hand had implemented waggle in several key titles for instance and had included in the ps4 but still don't get shit for it. So trash.

Yeah nothing bogs down a conference like good ol' Kinect. No wait let me take that back

The wonderbook shit was made fun of by nearly everyone on GAF, what's your point?
Sony has not been nearly as obnoxious with Move, as Microsoft has been with Kinect, not because they're the good guys or because they "care about the gamers" or other crap like that, but simply because Kinect was more successful than Move; that doesn't change the fact that the last few Microsoft years have been not exactly rainbows and sunshine for the so called "hardcore gamer".
Personally i want to remain positive about it, so i'm not gonna cry foul just yet, but for what I am looking for in a gaming console, i feel Sony is hitting closer to the goal lately, something that wasn't true, for me, at the start of the generation.

Well that's all they have been showing for the past 4 years.

So they had all their other teams working on next gen launch titles for 4 years. Lineup is going to be glorious.

They're gonna show what they have in a one hour event, it will be an event for core gamers, it will be surprisingly cheap, they will have a strong lineup of 10 first party games at launch (no launch window BS) and the press will be able to actually play those games right after the event.

As far as games go, we all know they're going to show some shooters, racers, some Kinect crap, and not much else. Not that Sony was much better in this regard though.

I think MS will do well. Sony's conference was good and I think MS's conference will be good, too.

I feel they will probably show more at their unveiling than Sony - especially if they want to launch during the same time period as PS4. If they do - they will have a larger unveiling, will show the console, possibly a price (possibly) and show more titles with heavy 3rd party support (possibly a bit of throwing money around for exclusives for launch).

If they spend anything more than just a few moments with Kinect - I'm out. I liked the fact that the new PS Dual camera was shown for just a brief moment - blink and you'd miss it - I didn't like the fact that they showed (while interesting) a Move demo. I'm not into motion controls - as much as I like the technology and believe it needs to exist - I just don't dig them for personal use.

I understand that you need to show brief moments like this to show support for those who adopt motion controls, absolutely, but I think the Move showing was more than enough time to dedicate to motion gaming. If MS can stick with a similar timeline regarding Kinect - I'll be fine with the conference - if they do this huge extravaganza on it - I'm out.

I think we will have a better idea if any of the past rumors are true about being a Kinect-focused device. Again, I think it's a fine piece of tech and so is Move - I just could care less for motion gaming. They have their place and should be shown but they should never be the focus of a gaming machine dedicated to the core gamer.

We will have to wait and see. I'm just excited to see Sony and MS kick off another war with a new gen - the more those kids fight - the more stuff we get from them as gamers. Win.

I agree the console design itself isn't so important. I wasn't bothered at all for sony not showing it, while I really apreciated they showed the new, really great DS design. However I think MS will be showing it. They could save it as an additional reveal for E3, but I don't believe they will.

I am sure they will bring "it" and hopefully they are smart enough to spread themselves out and pander to every crowd/demographic and not just focus on 1.

Everything for me personally depends on the EDGE rumors, as long as they are shown to be fake (or company changed their ideas behind the 720) then i will be happy. I do not care if they spend 30 minutes dancing with the Kinect, just showing a few games of what is to come and not force always online DRM, anti used game policies etc and i will be happy.

I'm apparently one of the few on Neogaf that really believes in the Kinect dream. I admit that Kinect 1 was a complete dud, but I really really hope they come out extremely strong for Kinect 2, with an extremely impressive game for it, whatever that may be. I'm thinking Milo in a deeper and more video game ready form as my standard here.

I'd really like to see the industry take solid steps forward in more than just graphics, but with Nintendo whiffing by just making a more limited tablet, and Sony just not caring about that sort of thing, Microsoft's kind of my only hope.

It depends.

Sony's conference was over all pretty straight forward and aimed at the gaming community. They hit on more consumer friendly capabilities, but never focused too long on them. It seemed liked Sony was very gamer focused, but that is my perspective.

Microsoft seems to be trying to cater to everybody and their mom, at least based on the rumors. It could lead to a very convoluted conference without any real aim, or the wrong aim/focus. I think they should spend more time on the gaming side personally, because I think they really need gamers to have confidence in what they are bringing to the market because I think they have received a lot of negative press/feedback from gamers in the last few months.

Should be interesting what they bring to the table.

I want new IP's with the exception being Alan Wake. What I will most prob get is more boring/generic shooters like Halo and COD in the conf coupled with lots of Kinect 2 demo's. I really hope MS surprise me. Fingers crossed.

Sony brought it? How does Sony's conference appeal to the core gamer? I saw shoot shoot shit after shoot shoot shit. Sony is going after Dudebro.

They showed a Killzone game, a Dreamwork's-styled game, some puppeteering game, an indie puzzle game, a superhero game, a sandbox game, an RPG tech demo, another tech demo, etc.

The majority of time was spent not shooting things during footage. They showed a rather broad range of titles. Granted, I will say they were aimed for core gamers with a splash of the "else" category - but they didn't focus on dudebro anything. I think their strategy of launching towards the core gamer first is smart - I feel the price will be an early adopter/core gamer price. Something casuals will not be willing to purchase immediately. Price drop and casual games later - they will start moving in that direction while continuing to support core gamers.

Again, I didn't see dudebro shooter after dudebro shooter - I saw a wide range of titles aimed more towards the core gamer. If you like Angry Birds - I can see how you might think otherwise.

I'm really hoping MS opens up at the core gamer, too. That's where I sit.
