Microsoft E3 conference: June 4th 10:00 AM PDT

None of the latest conferences have been worth watching live IMO (except maybe the famous Konami conference). I've been happy watching the videos a few hours later, so I can skip the boring parts. I only regret missing a few GAF meltdowns, but they can be tracked back in the official topics anyway.
The constructor conferences are interesting to check their strategy and sometimes for a few surprises, but for game info the third parties are usually better. The highlight of last year was Bioshock, for example.

Kinect Kinect Kinect

360 is the new Wii, it just prints money.
So why would M$ do something else?

Announcing the 720 would be a mistake in my opinion. Wait until next E3 (if the release date is late 2014).

The MS conferences the last few years have been pretty bad save for a small section of hardcore games being shown in the middle. Still, they usually have the best stage and production values of the E3 conferences so there's that.

See my previous post. No matter how much you would like for MS to have performed badly, they vastly outperformed the two. MS destroyed them in the conference and the results since reflect that. As I have mentioned previously you might want to consider the words behind E3.

Considering it is a sales conference, each company can be judged on how well they did by how well the games sold that they showed.

Hardly. Kinect performance has less to do with E3 showings than it does with the gigantic marketing campaign built around it.

Fail made into words...

Buyers from around the world go to E3 so publishers can woo them sell them games that will take up shelf space that following Xmas. MS uses their maketing for Kinect as a selling point for buyers to stock more games in their stores but showing retail buyers what they think customers will want is a huge part of the conferences.

So if the games sell well that they show in the conference that means they did their job at the press conference. Again, gamers forget why E3 even exists in the first place. It was when it started and is to this day a sales conference that the press is invited to.

And don't forgot people you know actually trying out the tech and liking it.

Heavens forbid though eh people actually buy something they like and not what I like!!??

It's not fair,it's not fair at all.

I love my 360 so let's stop with the "Wah, wah, you're insulting MS!" garbage here.

I thought the conference was awful. Go back and read the "rate the conferences" thread on GAF. It did NOT go over well with the general gaming audience.

The Kinect portions were awkward, boring, and some were even scripted with horrible pre-taped footage (Star Wars Kinect). Remember the guys "playing" Kinect Sports football? How about the kids playing the Disneyland game? Or the guy who acted out the movements a second ahead of the actual movement on Star Wars? It absolutely KILLED that conference.

And I love my Kinect.

I'm not saying anything about sales. MS has dominated the past year and I'm happy for them. That doesn't change the fact that the conference was total trash.

they've been no worse then the other confrences.

At least MS doesn't show games that never get released... *cough* agent and last guardian *cough*

sony's confrences always look like they have more "stuff" but they never really deliver on what they promise.

Reacting to an embarrassing conference is not trolling but like he said they've given me no reason to be optimistic or excited about their conference. Their last 2 were big jokes and based on how their system has been doing I expect the same thing. They treat these conferences like a big show for casuals now while the real show is all of the floor demos.
Good? It that a bad thing now?

That's one thing I don't get about saying they have great production value, those Kinect sections that take up most of the conferences are so fake and awkward.

Good? It that a bad thing now?

No its not, but considering the system is in about the same position as it was last year, its safe to say this E3 conference will be fairly similar to the last two. Those conferences have about one nice 20 minute section of some games you actually care about, surrounded by a bunch of games that while not necessarily bad, are not really targeted at hardcore gamers.

I don't really mean the actual content so much as how the stage and production is generally a cut above the other. The little things like bringing out the developers with music from the games, nice background art from the game, lighting, etc. are good touches. Last year when Gears 3 had its on stage demo that was a pretty cool way of presenting the trailer and introducing the game using that stage setup. Now if the actual content was better paced and more interesting, it would be slam dunk. I look at the E3 2009 conference as a good example of what they can do when they get it right. Aside from the Tony Hawk ride and Kinect segments, it was great.

There's going to be some Gears of War prequel reveal.

And that too. Not my cup of tea, the ridiculous motion segment thing, but I can see the much wider appeal. A couple of dancing-singing games and you're kicking ass, sales wise.
Microsoft succeeded in following the Wii trail, no denying it, but this is a gaming forum and, as such, the only thing that should matter is the quality of the line up.

I never said that the conferences where good, Derrick01 just implied (intentionally?) just because their last two conferences where jokes the hardware sales performance where poor. That is far from the truth.

I think you misunderstood him. He meant that the conferences have been bad and since the system has been doing well with a pretty thin first party lineup and a Kinect focus(which has been mostly what the conferences have offered the last two years), nothing's going to change.

It did NOT go over well with the general gaming audience.
Actually their conferences go over great with the general gaming audience who mainly play COD and love the new footage. It's pretty much a no brainer, why target an internet audience in the 10's of thousands when they can target the USA Today/Today Show/COD audience that's in the millions.

In terms of style, there's nothing wrong with MS's E3 pressers. The content just doesn't satisfy the GAF audience. Also, I personally find Don Mattrick somewhat smarmy.

While, Sony's conference is usually incredibly poorly paced even when they do have content to show. And Jack Tretton's jittery nervousness doesn't help.

All I remember about Nintendo's E3 last year was being confused about what exactly the Wii U initially.

I actually meant the opposite. It's doing well, but Kinect is the reason why. So they will focus the majority of the show on that again and for the 3rd time in a row the conference will be a joke.

How could anyone not?

Between him and Kudo, Microsoft clean up in the unbearable presenters stakes.

You obviously don't understand the point of the conference. The conference isn't designed to win GAF, it is designed to sell consoles and enhance profits. There are not too many folks here that appear to view these things from a rational third party perspective. To put it in context, the two biggest E3 announcements of the last several years were Netflix and ESPN on XBOX Live followed by Kinect.

This is GAF. We're having a discussion on a GAF message board. I'm trying to understand why you find it odd that I'm looking at it from a "guy who posts on GAF" point of view.

Aside from that, I notice that you had no response to my criticisms about the conference itself. Entertainment-wise, they've still been awful. They aren't scripted well and the Kinect portions were garbage. And, again, I love Kinect. The demonstrations and acting on-stage have been horrendous.

Sure, but you can't just plug your fingers in your ears and ignore why MS is even on stage showing stuff to begin with. I would expect people here to be smart enough to see it from both sides, the gamer side and the business side.

I understand WHY they are showing it. I've never said I didn't. MS wants Kinect in every house--they better be showing plenty of Kinect software if they want to achieve that goal.

I was contending that their conferences have been shoddy at best because of the poor scripting, acting, and the poorly-paced Kinect sequences. It really kills any momentum they have. By the end of it the audience is like, "meh."

Production, presentation, and content were all superior to the others. For what they are, they were highly effective. Masterpiece theater they were not.

If you are going to discuss best conference broadly then you need to do so objectively. If you want to discuss which conference showed the most games that got you excited that is an entirely different discussion, albeit a completely valid one. A fact most choose not to recognize.

But when the sales numbers comes in, all the games shown do very well at retail so they did something right since the conference is there to woo buyers of huge retail chains into buying that product. Obviously, if these games sell then the conference was a success.

Will watch to see if MS still cares about hardcore first party titles.

Considering the 720 will be out next Fall, don't bank on new game announcements from them unless it's a Kinect game or two from their newly built first party studios (like MGS Vancouver). Microsoft has Halo 4, Fable: The Journey, and Forza World, all for this year and I'm sure they feel that's enough to send off the 360's last main season. And of course, they'll be pimping out Black Ops 2 as if it's exclusive to their console as usual.

What I see happening for core is:

Fable: The Journey demonstration
Forza World demonstration
Black Ops 2 demonstration
Halo 4 demonstration
New Xbox LIVE apps

The rest of the conference will be filled with embaressing Kinect performances, missing coconuts, sesame street pick up lines, and indoore sunglasses.

Of course I'd like to be proven wrong and this year's E3 will be akin to E3 '06 where there was nothing but core announcements, but given Microsoft's history afterwards, I doubt it.

Fuck that. I hate kinect. It will just be a fad just like the wii.

Waiting until 2014 is just stupid. Current pc games like bf3 barely run on these old consoles. 24 player on tiny maps... man i am really for next gen.

That's one thing I don't get about saying they have great production value, those Kinect sections that take up most of the conferences are so fake and awkward.

Because sony and Nintendo don't have the same feeling during their motion controller segments?

Half the time you have an adult and kid actors pretending to be gamers, of course it's not going to seem natural. =D

Production, presentation, and content were all superior to the others. For what they are, they were highly effective. Masterpiece theater they were not.

Again, I've presented to you numerous times why I thought the presentation was not "superior" to others. You seem to be the one who keeps ramming his fingers in his ears screaming, "lalalala."

And, again, I understand that. Being a "success" and being the "best presentation" are 2 completely different things.

Wii is a fad? I thought we were talking about E3 2012 but it seems you are talking about E3 2006.

And, again, I understand that. Being a "success" and being the "best presentation" are 2 completely different things.

Being the best presentation to you and being the best presentation to the buyer at Walmart getting ready to put down tens of millions of dollars on your products is two different things. They only have to worry about being the best presentation to one group of people is what my point is and you and I don't fall in that group.
