Microsoft: ROG Xbox Ally Will Play All Games Available For PC – Including PlayStation’s Games

I really don't know why you're going on this crusade to try and trash people. Everyone has known it was going to be a PC for over a year. Every time PS ports a game to PC, I was thinking that is a game I could potentially play in the future. I made a thread over a year ago asking for advice on pre-built PC options and decided to wait to see the MS version to compare cost. It'll be a PC either way, either a 3rd party one or a MS made one from the surface team. Over and over we've said that all that matters is the app; the windows lite software portion which will make any PC feel more like a console, and the forward compatibility efforts. No one is being cultish at all. People are weighing the options of moving to PC and using the MS big screen mode. Everyone's said this the whole time.

People are noting that they can take part of their Xbox library to PC now through Play Anywhere (hopefully more to come), load it into a big screen mode that looks like an Xbox UI, and also use the other stores that have games they previously couldn't play on Steam, Epic, GoG, including PS games. That's it.

At any point in the last decade you (or anyone else who is interested in this device) could have bought/built a PC and missed out on absolutely nothing that Xbox have had to offer.

It would also have resulted in you being able to play every game released on PC over that period of time (yes, including the Playstation ones), it would have enabled you to have access all the emulators, you still would have had access to gamepass (which has always received all the day one games for a cheaper price), enabled you to have access to other subscription services if you wish along with free games on epic, and you would have saved a bunch of money for not having to pay to play online.

And the biggest thing in all of this - it would have enabled you to have zero concerns about your games library, you wouldn't be beholden to what Microsoft will or won't do regarding your previous Xbox purchases. Because at this stage all you can do is sit and hope. I've said this many times before, I've been there with Zune, it's not a good place to be in.

This is a brand that has done nothing but undermine their console over the last decade. Your unwavering support and loyalty has not only enabled and encouraged that behaviour, but it will also end up costing you.

The only reason this thread exists is because every time this has come up for the last 16 months someone always chims in to say the PS won't ever allow that.

Back here again are we? Please remind me, who exactly is that someone?

Sony need to block this
Why? They still control what and when PlayStation Studios titles hit the PC market. I don't think they care if "Xbox" players play them on a PC. Not that I expect it to, but it could lead to more PC sales for them and a way to bring PS games to "Xbox" players without compromising their player base.

Obviously. I didn't want to or need to as long as Xbox was an option this generation. Actually, a decade ago I was playing on PS4 and didn't have an Xbox One. Xbox consoles as we previously knew them are no longer going to be an option. Are you just simply shitting on people because they are moving to PC but didn't do it earlier? That's what it seems like. People can move to PC anytime they want and it doesn't require your approval to be "real PC" gamers. You're just being a gatekeeping elitist.

We've already talked about this too by the way. There's all kinds of reasons someone could be more interested in PC now than 10 years ago. At no point does anyone have to justify this to you.

If me telling you that if the benefits (that are being talked about in this thread) on PC, which have existed for a long time now, interest you and that you should have made the move sooner makes me a "gatekeeping elitist" then so be it.

You insulting people over and over makes you a gatekeeping elitist. Everyone is aware of how PC works and that being on it 10 years ago means you'd have your library on PC still. Literally everyone knows this.

You feel insulted because you're being told that you could have had the experience you suddenly desire for a long time prior to Xbox slapping their sticker on a handheld PC?

The truth hurts sometimes I guess.

The truth has literally nothing to do with you. Most of the time you are just distorting it to insult people and everyone here knows it.

Does it suck potentially not having your library in the future? Big time. Everyone has been wondering about this for 16 months. All we can do is hope they keep adding more BC options. The number one thing I have talked about with Xbox is forward compatibility so you're not telling me anything I haven't discussed countless times.

Stupid ass headline. It plays PC games, duh. If there's a Sony game on PC, yes it will play that Sony game. How could it not?

I wonder... does it also play Valve games??? HMMMM.

All the people trashing this question, we literally had people telling us on here over and over that Sony would step in and stop this. I read this probably 20x at least on here. Here we have a journalist that got access to someone and asked so we could get the answer. And we got it. This means Xbox PC will also load the Xbox Store app, Steam, Epic, Gog, and play anything on it. Tons of people tried to speculate otherwise.

If you guys think it's a stupid question to ask, imagine how stupid it was for the many people on here that didn't even ask the question but stated over and over that Sony would stop it and were completely wrong.
I will point out this isn't a xbox console

Xbox are brave or very stupid for attempting to launch a handheld round the same time switch 2 launches and for probably double the price.
I know it's just a platform but still.

Alternate headline and article TLDR:

Steam Deck-like handheld Windows PC from ASUS with an Xbox logo for PR, will play Playstation's PC games released by Sony for PC. News at 11."

Let's confuse consumers, especially Xbox fans, as they're tech illiterate, into thinking this is somehow a gotcha, an Xbox native console and not a handheld PC, so they can cope with "Sony too!" on the internet and not feel insecure anymore about Xbox releasing all their first party henceforth on Playstation and Nintendo consoles (if it can run), with no red lines, even tentpole franchises like Halo, Gears and Forza, and do us some unpaid console fanboy damage control on the internet.

Note: The real Xbox native handheld console, is still coming, along with the next gen Xbox, either next year or 2027, just like a Series S low powered, low cost, SKU, but handheld. Whether it can/be allowed to run Steam/Epic Store, are yet to be seen.

Xbox native handheld has been put on the "backburner". I doubt it will ever happen, frankly.

It's the new Narrative™ from the hardcore green camp. Don't fall for the bait.

They're the only ones spinning this. FUD is ingrained, after all.

Honestly a shame. I'd actually be willing to spend a decent chunk on one if it could play my entire digital Xbox library (including digital BC games from 360 and OG)

Only problem is Microsoft keeps finding ways to trip on their own feet when it comes to hardware. They just can't seem to keep things simple and avoid overcomplicating everything.

I want them to succeed in the PC space much like I wanted them to in the console space but you speak the truth. I believe a lot of it is ingrained in their "crush the competition" mentality. They spend a lot of time focused on their competitors instead of focusing on their best moves. They are too big to be this reactionary.

Microsoft seems to lack the ability to focus on anything. Xbox the tablet. Xbox the streaming stick. Xbox PC. Xbox console. Some games are on tablet and roku via streaming, but not all. Some games are available on PC, but not all. One "Xbox" will play games from other stores while another "Xbox" won't. It is a confusing mess especially when Jez Corden has to put out a "Public Service Announcement" due to "reams of misinformation" saying this "Xbox" is "Xbox in name only". Thing is that applies to everything not actually an Xbox console.

IMO, Microsoft would have been much better off putting their non-console branding behind Game Pass and not Xbox. Game Pass isn't exactly simple in its implementation, but at least it isn't tied to one physical device like Xbox is.

You can point to MS's ineffectiveness and errors in countless ways, but I don't think it's possible in this specific area.

First, because to offer what you're suggesting, the technology must exist, and that's not the case. Today, there is no hardware manufacturer capable of offering a handheld with the power necessary to natively run the XBO-Series game catalog. Much less at an affordable price. Not before 2027-2028, and certainly only to run/emulate XSS versión of games.

People tend to look beyond what's possible and logical. And MS is acting with a certain degree of logic here, because the other intelligent and logical thing to do would be to not release any type of handheld at all.

A proper Xbox handheld would need specific support from third parties... Come on, it would be crazy to buy a device with a high probability of becoming a paperweight in a short time due to lack of support (PSVita like situation). Switch2 is an example and it's carence of 3rd support evident in these summer games events. And Xbox is not Nintendo.

A PC handheld is a much less risky product, and for the user, too. A product with guaranteed support and the largest possible catalog from all publishers, along with the benefits of PlayAnywhere , GamePass, and being an open platform with no mandatory subscription to play....

This Xbox Ally is clearly MS's test bed with the OS.
Curiously, the important thing about the XBOX Ally announcement should be precisely what refers to the OS and the advances it may entail in that regard..... but almost all the controversy (and this thread is an example) is centered on whether or not it's correct to say it's an Xbox..... especially by many of those who continually show you the meme of a PS5 image and "this is an Xbox."🤷😏

For people like me who play on PC already and don't own a PS5....this is a godsend. A likely 900 dollar godsend...but still.

All my games in one place, which is all we PCMR folks ever really wanted.

You get that now with your PC.

Nothing changes other than lower-spec portability.
Oh well yea...I thought that was kinda understood from the thread topic. But yea the portability the draw for me.

I don't think you could play your Xbox library on previous handhelds though right? Like for example, not all my Xbox One stuff would be on a Steam Deck. Most if not all of my PS4 stuff wouldn't have been on Steam Deck because Sony just really started it's PC push this gen.

I do seem to remember on the Xbox showcase they were saying something like everything in one place. I don't know what that interface looks like though. Am I downloading Epic and Steam to the ROG Xbox Ally? Or is there some kind of interface that merges them. I'm hoping for the latter because that would even further distinguish this device IMO

You are not playing all of your Xbox stuff on this. Not natively, anyways.

So it would be like...the Play anywhere titles only. Basically any Xbox stuff that's on PC at the time of release and moving forward.

I suppose others would have to be cloud based?

And, like now, I could play returnal, god of war, etc etc that I currently own on Steam.

And some people want to try and say that the messaging/marketing around this device isn't misleading.

For sure, plus you would pay less for games on average with the Steam sales and such. Free games via Epic...much as I dislike them, I claim those games every month.

Of course it's misleading. They've got you thinking you can play your Xbox Series and Xbox One library on this thing.
If some people are actually confused about that, then that's unfortunate. Main thing I have asked for is a big clarification on forward compatibility. So if you guys want to criticize this for being vague, that's fine with me. I agree. Spell it all out in an interview and explain what they're working on in that area and what they're meeting resistance with.
