Microsoft: ROG Xbox Ally Will Play All Games Available For PC – Including PlayStation’s Games

In the Xbox Showcase there was a game that said it was coming in 2025 to Xbox PC and later in 2026 to Xbox Series X, so if this handheld really is an "Xbox Console" then that would mean there are "Xbox consoles" that get games earlier than the real Xbox consoles. So weird.

I wonder if potential customers, especially the ones who are exclusively console gamers (not on PC), will be confused by which games this device will play and how it will play them (e.g., native vs. streamed). I'm a console guy myself, and I find it confusing. I assume PC guys are used to this sort of thing ("Well, it runs here but not there" or "it runs under these conditions but not those"), but I wonder how the dyed-in-the-wool Xbox console gamers will interpret this. Will they buy it thinking it will do something, only to find it does not?

Even Jez Corden gets it....

PSA: I need people to know the ROG 'Xbox Ally' is Xbox by name and software experience only — It is a full Windows PC, you can install *anything* you want on it

A lot of these gaming sites are really going to struggle with MS' changing priorities. Sony vs. Nintendo just doesn't work as well and so we have these grasping at straws takes to keep the war alive between MS and Sony.

Samsung ads making fun of Apple. Apple people not caring what Samsung people have to say. It's a war sure. But a petty one.

That rumored Sony handheld will be dead on arrival , why buy a handheld that can play only playstation games when there is one that can play playstation games on pc , Xbox and PC games

does this mean that everything is a playstation?

on a more serious note, I do think the future of xbox = PC. maybe a PC that also has BC when it comes to xbox titles

Rog ally x Xbox might as well sync to the series x, used as a weapon to control drones, you know my first portable was the Sega game gear, and I played the game boys (color, advance, sp and micro), I waited for Sonys portable and finally the psp came out and burnt down the industry with umds, successful lineup (portable ops, socom, god of war, madden, gta, lbp) many of these games on the rog ally Xbox I can already get on console it's really sad and exciting at the same time with these juggernaut handhelds, Alienware is great and are very good but we aren't allowed to discuss gaming laptops around here, these handhelds are limited still and in the face of the casual they're great.

I can see Phil Spencer on the stand at a trial:

Lawyer: "It says here you said this game would be coming to Xbox, and yet it's not coming to the Xbox Rog Ally X, which you called an Xbox."

Phil: "Well you see it really depends on what kind of Xbox you are talking about, uhhh... I mean, one is a PC the other is a console.."

Lawyer: "Well it says here you said loudly at the end of a press event that the Rog Ally X is an Xbox console"..

Phil: "Well yeah but come on, who even really thought I was serious? I mean it is a console, but not a CONSOLE."

I remember hearing it a couple of times, but not "over and over" 20x. You made it sound like it was this widespread thing. I didn't perceive it that way. I heard it a couple of times, but it never got any traction, people never took it seriously, because it didn't make sense for Sony to block their games through normal PC channels.

I also believe people thought you were implying that it was Sony fans who were saying it, but it seems the reverse has been demonstrated - that it was Xbox console warrior types that said it, as a way of sneering at "evil Sony."

Just my two cents.
Womp, Womp

I'm not sure there is a war between MS and Sony - not anymore. MS is changing their business structure and attempting to expand - an attempt which, at this time, includes Sony. I'm more referring to gaming media desperately looking for clicks to extent that they'd go with the headline in the OP.

Yeah, I recall manabyte rehashing this and it isn't comparable. This is a PC. Not a service running on a console's browser. Geforce Now is 100% optional for every publisher so Sony took advantage of that to prevent their games from on the competition's console.
The difference is that Sony had all the power with GeForce Now. Pull the games from being playable on xbox or we pull them from your service.
They dont have the same power to do that with Steam. They would also be facing severe backlash if they removed the ability to access PSN from a specific device - which is the only way they could prevent a specific PC from accessing one of their games.

Yep. Steam isn't going to go down that road of letting Sony bring console war nonsense like that to their platforms. They would tell Sony to fuck off in an instant.

What did Sony do? Or is this based on speculation that Sony could block Xbox games? There is zero evidence that they plan to do this.
My main problem with Sony is, these morons didn't announce any exciting stuff in recent years. No new announcements and cancelled games like days gone 2. Pursuing live service games and failing at it is not enough, I hope they suffer more, even more than I did in the last years waiting for exciting games.
But it seems they are pushing dei with their first party games too, so I don't care anymore, just want to see them burn.

Yes another failed Sony product prediction. That's worked out well for you guys.

This indeed what Microsoft is going to do I will go a step further by saying the next Xbox console won't be make by them. Microsoft will license the brand out and let third parties go buck wild. That way they have no overhead from r&d and they key to their strategy of "everything's an Xbox".

MS just better hope the Xbox brand and devices themselves have traction with customers, because I'd say right now with this new ROG Xbox thing, Xbox needs Asus more than the other way around.

I think it's interesting that a major company is going for a hardware device that doesn't require any subscription to play online.

Wish they'd put more focus on that on their marketing, seems like a good adventage over the competition and it could end up making Sony and Nintendo consider dropping the paid online scam. Very optimistic, I know.

Online paywalls are probably gonna go extinct in the next 5 years anyway because even more GAAS are gonna switch to F2P models where those are exempt from the paywall.

You can't play native Xbox console games on it, which are locked behind their own paywall. Streaming your games will be locked behind a paywall.

This is a niche device. Nothing more. In fact, it's a vehicle to get people into their very own paid online ventures and Play Anywhere titles.

Actually makes me wonder, if they do get full Xbox BC through emulation and/or translation layers for all the systems, would MS try monetizing that by tying it to a subscription?

If the new systems are going to be heavily Windows-based, then they can't really lock access to other storefronts behind Game Pass, like they could've done (for a cheaper SKU) if they were going to still prioritize Xbox OS for a new console. But the Xbox BC, that's 100% their own thing, and they know there's no real solution for it on Windows as a whole.

I wouldn't necessarily blame them if they tried tying that to a Game Pass subscription, at least for a while. Xbox owners wanting to "continue the good fight" would totally buy new hardware just to pay for a feature they were getting for free previously. Meanwhile for normal people on PC it'd probably give enough of a software boost (particularly lots of OG Xbox & 360 games that never got PC ports or have shoddy ports, or have to rely on shitty emulators) to convince them to get a PC Game Pass sub.

Especially if MS added actual QOL features, enabled mod support and set up servers for some of the online-capable games like PGR 2 & 3, DOA4 etc.

Their partnership with japan/asian studios is not the problem, its the only thing keeping the boat afloat for me this gen... their woke mismanaged first party studios is the rotten needing some cleaning and ass wooping

Well, they're probably distancing themselves from SBI so that should solve a lot of the problems on that front. That, and it seems in general people are shifting away from such stuff, very specifically the way it's been abused and made a mockery by big business the last few years for ESG credits and brownie points by virtue signaling.

which game? could be some early access beta phase thing on PC

This is an xbox, until suddenly it isn't.

I love this new Xino line from Microsoft

Microsoft wants to change but it wants to take the past with it. There is no way to move forward making Xboxes in name only. Either make an Xbox or create a Windows-Machine and leave the Xbox brand but it has already decided that it will continue with the pretext that the Xbox is anything but an Xbox, sad.

I can see the branding is already creating a pretty large degree of confusion. I've seen quite a few people asking if this can play PC Games or if this can play Xbox games. Last time I saw that kind of product confusion was the Wii U, so I'm pretty doubtful these devices are going to gain much traction.

Xbox is a console. If Microsoft wants to change that, it needs more than a shitty marketing campaign no one noticed, and a third party device that looks like it's being sent out to die.

Well said. To me, the best thing to come out of all this is a proper gaming mode for Windows. The next question is whether MS allows regular Windows gamers to utilize this at some point or will it remain tied to speciific hardware.

Fear not, confusion will turn to apathy when the price is announced.
