Microsoft Says Sony Will Benefit From Launching First-Party Games on PS Plus

In the midst of an ongoing spat over Activision Blizzard’s impending purchase, Microsoft has dismissed Sony’s stance on PS Plus day-one games, arguing that the company will actually benefit from launching its first-party games on the revamped service. For the uninitiated, Sony and Microsoft are going back-and-forth over the Activision Blizzard deal as regulators around the world consider the acquisition’s potential impact. As part of the process, Sony has expressed its concerns about the Game Pass model whereas Microsoft has accused Sony of “blocking” games from landing on its subscription service.

What Microsoft has to say about PS Plus day-one games

As spotted by folks over at Kotaku, part of the document released by Brazilian authorities that’s been making rounds reads:

Sony could be able to leverage the high quality of their first-party games even more by making them available on PlayStation Plus at launch day. Such a strategy might be able to quickly speed up the growth of the service’s user base as a response to the competitive pressure of Game Pass (or any other service) and [the strategy] is not adopted by Sony, even when it comes to the new and updated PlayStation Plus. Such a move by Sony could make PlayStation Plus even more attractive in order to be able to rival eventual strategies by competing game publishers – to the benefit of gamers.
Sony has previously said that it doesn’t make financial sense to release first-party AAA games on PS Plus considering the costs associated with making games. The company, which evidently doesn’t have the kind of cash flow Microsoft does, is of the view that making a loss on blockbuster games would ultimately diminish their quality because studios won’t rake in enough money to further invest into future games and technological improvements.

Indeed because there is no way on God's earth that I'm paying £70 for new games. And even Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart has never dropped below £50 yet.
Funny how every single person gives Nintendo a pass for this exact same fucking thing. Their games are trash, but their prices are never lowered. Some of their games are 5+ years old still FULL RETAIL. Where's your outrage? Only seems to happen when Sony does something.

This. I'm counting down the days when all games, including third party AAA games, are released on a subscription platform day one, plus never leave the service.

Fuck paying double figures for one game. So archaic.

Microsoft seems to be very concern of Sony business strategy here. Interesting.

I think it is more off a counter argument, when sony was "concerned" about Microsoft acquiring Activision Blizzard and potentially offering COD on their game pass service.

That being said, it would probably be easier for people to follow if it was a mega thread, and not lots of separate posts for tidbits taken from each side.

Sony always follow Microsofts stuff eventually. But they will fight and kick and scream until they can no longer have their own way. A lot like Nintendo.

It makes sense when you can still make the big bucks with the traditional model, but all this ‘games as a service’ stuff is clearly the new way and will only get bigger. Eventually Sony will have to conform.

They are saying it will massively increase growth of ps+ premium or whatever the new service is called.
Because very few buy game on Xbox... (Remember Ace Attoney Trilogy when only "4000" guys buy the game.... that why Microsoft put all games in day one on GP.

Sony dont need to put their AAA games on PS+ Day one. They losing money, game are less budget and still doing well without doing this.

Maybe for AA or less risky games... But when you see even third party games are doing well WITHOUT GP... (Elden Ring / RE8)

We all know GP isn't profitable... at this time...

Microsoft forgets Sony actually has games that people will gladly pay full price for.

Sony has the catalog to do both strategies which they are doing. Premium new games like God of war Ragnarok is full price and AA games like Stray plus the older titles are in the subscription service which is a smart strategy.

In the long run, Sony has to create more online games to fill the Call of Duty void that will happen once Microsoft puts Call of Duty in game pass and Jim Ryan already said they are working on creating these online/live service games.

And all subscriptions will be 1 dollar and come with free internet and electricity. Any day now, it shouldn't take long.

I sense sarcasm.

However, there isn't any reason for all games to release on subscription services from day one and remain on the service.

It's £43 on Amazon right now.

I only have PS5 digital so stuck with PSN store pricing.

Specifically for me, I have no outrage with Nintendo because I have never nor will I ever buy any of their hardware! :D

Sure, God of war need PS Plus at Day One to sell at 10 millions
Can you at least read before writing things like these? Were are they saying they NEED to do that?

Microsoft seems to be very concern of Sony business strategy here. Interesting.
It's a counterpoint to Sony saying they won't be able to compete. Microsoft is just telling the people in charge of approving the merger how they could be doing things that they are not currently doing. Nothing more to get from this

The current narratives in the gaming space are interesting. Microsoft is playing it pretty smartly and we do have a little bit of a reversal situation going on in. If you remember the launch of the Xbox One and PS4.

They are also in different business cycles. Microsoft is accumulating and luring people while Sony is greedily maximizing profits under Jim Ryan after having made a successful core PS userbase with the PS4 generation.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
The difference is a fair amount of Sony exclusives will actually sell very well without being on a subscription service day one, the same can’t be said about a decent amount of Microsoft’s day one offerings.
this.

Unlike Sony, the traditional model is not possible for Microsoft .
Its pretty clear Microsoft is banking on Starfield success. Even games like Starfield is day 1 on Gamepass, that speaks alot.

I meant in general. I feel like practically no one talks about Nintendo's shitty practices. They have tiny teams of 20 folks making half-assed games and people pay full price for it - their prices never go down either.

We do not know this though? Neither of us work at Microsoft, plus I can't imagine they would keep going all these years later if it wasn't to some degree.

Anyway, this response is clearly a reply to Sony talking about game pass and Activision blizzard with this Brazil thing.

Microsoft have just responded essentially saying, you could massively increase your sub count too, by putting your games on the service day one, what is true.

There no mention off game sales or profit in the article quoted in this thread :p

It would also be a lot easier to follow if we just had a mega thread for this Brazil thing about activision blizzard, rather than a thread for each tidbit/qoute.

I think this would work best for GaaS with microtransactions like GT7. The singleplayer cinematics are just too expensive to make and don't generate revenue other than the purchase price. But maybe Sony gives it a try, because they could really save some serious cash for marketing. They spent crazy numbers on marketing, because they have to sell as many games as possible with their current business plan.

Microsoft’s existing ips don’t sell as much as Sony’s.

That plus they’re day one on PC, which Sony hasn’t reached yet.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul. Sony's revenue from PS Plus would likely increase but only at the expense of losing revenue for the games in question. I'm sure Sony's done the math. This move would simply shift revenues from one sector to the other and likely lead to an overall lower revenue stream.
