Lots of leaders say lots of things all the time. Again, though, you keep skirting around why Putin invaded.
Because those arguments are non-sense.
For example, there was never a promise that Ukraine would remain a Russian satellite state. And most important, there was never any signed treaty saying that.
And Ukraine is a sovereign country. It doesn't belong to Russia. So if the people voted to get stronger ties with the EU, that is their choice.
During all these decades, after the fall of the USSR, Ukraine remained close to Russia and because of that, it stayed underdeveloped, poor and with high corruption levels.
The Ukrainian people voted on a government that was to pursue a closer alliance with the EU, as to improve it's future.
Just consider that Poland and Ukraine had similar economic levels and population, after the fall of the USSR.
Poland joined the EU and opened to the rest of the world, including the USA and prospered immensely. While Ukraine remained poor and underdeveloped.
If any of us was in the position of the Ukrainian people, we would also vote for a government that wanted prosperity and freedom.
But here is the thing you miss. The EU, nor the USA invaded Ukraine. Ukraine was the one that wanted a better future for itself.
And it was Russia that invaded.
The other thing you forget is what Putin says, such as quoting Ivan Ilyin and Dugin.
This is a man hellbent on restoring the glory of the empire. Of the USSR.
Even before the invasion of Ukraine in 2014, he had already started expanding by invading Georgia. Of which it still holds a part of it's territory.
The invasion of Ukraine was always in Putin's plan.
