Yes.
Also, attributes on bows... Queen Bow has poison. Does that just increase poison chance with poison coating? Or does every shot carry a chance for poison?
That is on my list next, so I will see how I get on.
Are there only 3 Air Attacks with Bows? So far I have seen the exploding parachute one and what looks like loads of rocks falling from the sky.
I really want to know that. If I use spread shot, does each arrow hit count towards poison buildup? I also wonder if the level I charge it has any effect.
There are only three "Arc Shots", labeled as Wide, Focus, and Blast. Focus is just a smaller version of Wide, and Blast I believe does normal damage on top of whatever coating or element you have (like gunlance shots, barrel bombs, etc.).
Yes, every shot you fire with poison/paralyze/sleep adds up to a total against a monster, and once you get past a certain threshold (different for each monster), that status is applied. If you want to reapply that status, the threshold is raised each time. Since every shot counts, the multiple shots from Spread Lv. 3 or from Wide/Focus Arc Shots also count. Blast Arc Shots are a single hit, so they're better for high elemental or raw damage attacks.
Bows often have special boosts to a specific coating, like the Rathian and Wroggi bows having Poison boosts. This means that their poison shots do more status damage, getting you to that poison threshold faster. The armor skill Special Attack Up and the food skill Felyne Specialist also help. I often only need a Poison coating boost, along with Felyne Specialist, to get three poison applications on a monster with just 20 coatings. But you're also free to carry some Toadstools with you and craft them together with the empty vials they always leave at the beginning of missions.
If you talk to the weapon/armorsmith you can have him make gems/decorations that will give a coating boost through armor skills. "C.Poison, C.Exhaust", etc. They each give 2 points each, so remember that you'll have to set at least 5 of the same type of gem in your weapon+armor slots to activate the skill.
