It does more damage to enemies that are weak to water. Enemies don't resist elements iirc. It's raw damage will make up for anything not weak to water.

Yes, Tanzia is where the online missions are, but they can be played solo in the solo, or multi port. Beware though, monsters there are way stronger.

Early on, I personally just got armor that looked cool. If you really want to be effective though, go for skills that compliment your playstyle. For example, I just recently decided to go all out with the bow. For that I need full Purple Ludroth armor since it has a skill that will immensely help out with my stamina management.

Skills and weaknesses are what make armor stand out. A full set of Jaggi armor will work with a bunch of things, but also give you a fat weakness to fire.

Hope that helped :D

Awesome, that was very informative. Thanks a ton. Is there a list anywhere of all the armor skills and descriptions? I'm just using Jaggi armor right now, but I'd like to upgrade to something that could maybe make my switch axe more effective.

No problem. I believe there's a list online somewhere. Personally though, I just use the guide. Brady Games has a digital PDF guide that you can buy. It's pretty useful.

Man, Rathian was significantly easier in the Deserted Island.
Definitely gotta get the Village Quest for it done, so I can start farming.
Should be even easier with the lower HP/Attack too.

Anyone know if there's a way to purchase the digital BradyGames guide outside the US? Their site won't allow for International addresses :\

The Jaggi set is really good for the start of the game imo. I'm still using it and the Wroggi set on 5 star missions. Jaggi set comes with an innate Attack Up (S) skill and can be really easily upgraded to Attack Up (M) with gems.

Check out the Monster Hunter Wiki for the armour descriptions and skills though, or the Brady Games Guide.

There are only three "Arc Shots", labeled as Wide, Focus, and Blast. Focus is just a smaller version of Wide, and Blast I believe does normal damage on top of whatever coating or element you have (like gunlance shots, barrel bombs, etc.).

Yes, every shot you fire with poison/paralyze/sleep adds up to a total against a monster, and once you get past a certain threshold (different for each monster), that status is applied. If you want to reapply that status, the threshold is raised each time. Since every shot counts, the multiple shots from Spread Lv. 3 or from Wide/Focus Arc Shots also count. Blast Arc Shots are a single hit, so they're better for high elemental or raw damage attacks.

Bows often have special boosts to a specific coating, like the Rathian and Wroggi bows having Poison boosts. This means that their poison shots do more status damage, getting you to that poison threshold faster. The armor skill Special Attack Up and the food skill Felyne Specialist also help. I often only need a Poison coating boost, along with Felyne Specialist, to get three poison applications on a monster with just 20 coatings. But you're also free to carry some Toadstools with you and craft them together with the empty vials they always leave at the beginning of missions.

If you talk to the weapon/armorsmith you can have him make gems/decorations that will give a coating boost through armor skills. "C.Poison, C.Exhaust", etc. They each give 2 points each, so remember that you'll have to set at least 5 of the same type of gem in your weapon+armor slots to activate the skill.

Thank you Good Hunter! Some good info there for me to use.

Also, what are the options for cutting tails? Can I do them with arrows or the blast attack or am I stuck with the A attack swiping them? :D

I need an upgrade, G rank is killing me.

About to hunt my first Diablos, wish me luck!

Diablos down! It dropped pretty fast but I got hit so many times, I think it was my sloppiest fight in a very long while. The hitboxes of this thing are huge and it probably has the best monster shout of the game so far!

Plowing through the village quests at the moment just so I can fight high rank Arzuros on my own since there's no specific quest to fight him online and I need some mats off him. Kind of a shame, really, but I guess it's incentive to do the offline stuff, and it's not like it's hard considering I'm fairly decked out (HR4-5 level gear).

I haven't played much of this game in the last few days, but I'm going to start again tomorrow.

I'm trying to complete some of the other games in my play-log to focus on MH3U entirely, but it's proving difficult.

Juggling more than one game at a time [especially with one as addictive was MH3U] is painful. But I will succeed!

I'm in the same boat, but I'll always play online at night.
Right now I'm helping GAFer so I'm not ranking up but we'll do HR 4 stuff soon enough.

He appeard for me in the gatherring quest at Misty Peak (i think that's what it's called). I got a bonus at the end of it that was similar to what you'd get from beating him in a proper quest too.

Man, I love the save transfer feature. Being able to play while waiting for class/other daily junk while I'm out and about is too nice.

Good time to just gather resources and restock on items for bigger hunts tonight.

These are that rare to carve? Managed to get one from his tail the second time I fought him.
Not really, wiki says it's a 70% carve. Carved three tails, got none. (Well, "woes" :p). It's a bit like Xcom, you read anything above 70% and it sounds like a 100% guaranteed hit/carve in your mind. :p

Unfortunately you can only cut tails with the arrow swipe attack, which is very hard to pull off. For the tail pieces I need I usually play with friends or go hack one off with a blade and then fail the mission.

You can cut off Duramboros' tail with arrows though, as it comes off with shot/smash damage rather than cut.

Pretty sure it does. 2x Aoshira G rank had two different size bears for me once. One was huge!
Yeah absolutely does. Some of the bigger los are noticeably more of a pain in the ass to cut the tail off of because it sits almost beyond LS reach.

I love the Gamepad, but using it by itself is a bit cumbersome with a game as complicated as Monster Hunter. Just too much shit to keep track of while using it as a regular controller as well. There are some things I just can't get used to.

So I just bought a Pro Controller (I had one before but I returned it) and am going to have a much easier time with it, while keeping the map and everything on the Gamepad. So damn excited. <3

Wow, completed Rath Soul Z set in like 5 hunts. Fastest set I've ever completed probably.

Really? The GamePad works just fine for me. Only thing I might change is for the touch screen icons to take up the whole screen, so I could have "target monster" closer to my thumb. Also, aren't all the button and stick layouts exactly the same on the pro controller?

I'm not sure why, since I can use it for every other game on Wii U with no trouble. But I guess having a fast-paced, difficult and frantic game like Monster Hunter is a bit much for me.

So, been playing around with the weapons. Katana is cool, haven't tried any gunner types yet, will probably do that this weekend.

BUT, I really love Dual Blades ... but I also know these as the 'noob' weapons as a lot of people call them. Am I setting myself up for end-game mediocrity by doing this? I play with the girl on her 3DS so most likely my entire MH career will consist of just 2 player local co-op and solo (until I get a Wii U much later and possibly pick this up and transfer the save).

She also likes them so are we going to be able to kill things in time with these weapons later on? I notice the damage on other weapons is often double or triple, and while they do swing faster, i'm not sure if the damage is going to be there.

We tried a MP Peco (not sure of boss name, it was a 1 star bird like thing that shot poison balls and clacked it's wings together) and we were attacking him like crazy. Is it because I wasn't that upgraded, hopefully? I just upgraded to the 3rd level DS and Jaggi armor after spending about 35 minutes on that guy and both of us eventually dying. So I haven't tried him with my upgraded set yet.

You do have the option to move the touch screen buttons all the way to the left or right of the screen. There's no way to fill the whole screen, but at least you'd get it closer to one of your thumbs.
