Sound of Metal - Amazon Prime

Man this movie was great, I had no idea it was about a man that loses his hearing. Riz Ahmed is fricken amazingly talented in this, didn't even realise it was the guy from Rogue One!!! But yeah, the story is about him coming to grips with his new disability. I say check it out because it's great.

Ratched 1998 Godzilla over the weekend.

Didn't remember it being this retarded in terms of plot and dialog. But man, the special effects were really good for it's time. Still vaguely remember being blown away when I saw it in cinema back then.

what's the difference between a C and C-?

Wrath of a man. Not bad at all. Pretty entertaining despite the mythical status of its main protagonist. The score, in particular, is quite good, hightening the tension throughout, up to the finale...despite the events unfolding in a not so heart-pumping fashion. Statham plays himself, as usual, but the rest of the case gives a fine performance. Prepare to suspend your disbelief for two hours, and expect a solid direction, better than the recent crap by Guy Ritchie...Solid, if not inspired, but Ritchie's best days ended rather early in his career.
6.5/10.

Galveston - 2018 - HBO Max | ★

Surprised by how raw and good it was. Not entirely a thriller, but not just a drama either. I've never been a huge fan of Ben Foster but his brand of acting goes over perfectly in this role. Elle Fanning is good as usual. I've never heard of this director before, French actress / director Mélanie Laurent, but I'll be sure to check out whatever she directs in the future.

Melanie Laurent played Shoshanna, the Jewish woman that plotted her revenge as a movie theatre owner, in Inglourious Basterds...

Cruella - wasn’t too excited about it but still wanted to check it out. also wasn’t really the biggest Emma stone fan. I mean I had seen her in some stuff and liked her but i never watched something just cause she was in it ykno?. Ended up really enjoying the movie and will definitely now be watching anything she does.

101 Dalmatians - yup watched it cause of Cruella. I think the last time I watched it was probably about 25 years ago.

The Descent (2005) - kept seeing it recommended especially since I really enjoyed “As Above So Below” but honestly I was losing interest almost from the start. Thought it was a load of absolute rubbish. The monsters did remind of that Lovecraft story “The Beast In The Cave” and other than that the only time I felt uneasy was when the women were crawling through the small tunnels and one of them got stuck. That shit freaks me out.

The world seems hopeless, all the characters (Emily Blunt and co.) are in rhythm.
Sitting in a 25% capacity theater to me you have to think of those aliens as bears, or zombies that are capable of destroying cities and will make you desperate to breath. You’re screwed.
There’s the anti blunt crowd I think she was emotional and kept the family together.

Apparently you need to know some arcane stuff about Korean mysticism to fully understand the plot of this, which I looked up only after seeing the movie, d'oh. But even after that, in hindsight the movie, eh ... wasn't as great as reviews led me to believe. It had some great scenes here and there, but otherwise it was plodding, meandering, uneven, over-long and in need of an editor, and not really all that scary or tense IMO. Not a bad way to kill 2.5 hours, but I was expecting more.

Must be over 25 years since I've seen this, if not more, as a kids I remember loving the robots/aliens and that was that

As an adult seeing this again, its actually a touching character piece about dementia and family relationships broken down over time, and the robots/aliens rekindle that family spirit. And bring a sense of family back
Was quite sad tbh, i guess as you get older and question your own mortality and old ages, you see things like film in a completely different light.

This is classic speilberg, great watch, even the effects still hold up for the most part

Well worth watching again in my adult life

Just saw Midway. Shockingly accurate movie from the dude who made Independence Day and that one where New York froze.

The opening Pearl Harbor attack is better than the entirety of Michael Bay's movie:

Just got through watching the Russian Raid. I had a lot of fun watching it. It had a lot of fight scenes I wouldn't say they were the most skillful/technical but they had fun fighting. This nowhere near as good as The Raid though. It is pretty much a soldier and a bunch of thugs who fight together for the first half of the movie and in the last half the soldier goes all john wick on the bad guys. The thugs were a lot of fun to watch since they just like messing people up. If you like a lot of fighting and eventually a lot of shooting then this is the movie for you just don't go expecting a martial arts film. It kinda feels like gym/mma fighters who go out on a mission but Russian style. They should have made the movie a bit more cheesy. I'd give this movie a rating of B and would definitely watch a Russian Raid 2.

Just got through watching Max Cloud. I really enjoyed it. It is like set in the 80s and has retro video game scenes at times. The acting is over the top on purpose and I liked most of the characters in the end. It feels like it was missing a few things to elevate to cult classic or greatness. The biggest issue is that the budget seemed really small since you saw the same sets over and over again. I would have liked better trials for the crew to overcome. Most of the females were useless in the movie. I would have liked the female video game character to actually have overcome some trial instead of being just emotional support. I think fighting more interesting video game bosses would have made the game a bit more like a video game. I'd give this movie a rating of B-.

Does Scott Adkins avoid getting in the way in this one? I have a hard time watching movies he's in, honestly. I can handle in his niche of stereotypical bad guy westerner in Asian movies, but when he has to play a lead, he does my head in. I'd like to see a film of his where that wasn't the case. Triple Threat was close, but I could easily get distracted by the fighting in that one.

Just watched Willy's Wonderland yesterday. It was almost to the point of ridiculous. Cage doesn't say a damn word in the movie, and it's just, your typical B movie, IMO. Could have been better.

I just finished watching it and despite some badass moments with our boy Nic Cage it didn't live up to my expectations. A lot of the fight scenes were just bad. I understand they intended to make them like from a B-movie from the past, but they just weren't fun to watch.

I also didn't care about any of the kids characters. A very bland bunch and Caylee didn't even have a nude scene. ;)

The movie is a little corny so Scott Adkins is suppose to get in the way in this one , I guess. He plays as the main character of a video game so he is suppose to be over the top but you end up finding he is a bit more complex. I think what threw me off with this movie was every one was or all the guys were nearly the same height as him. He fights in so many asian movies and ends up being a taller more physically imposing guy so this threw me off. Had to google after the movie was over and found out he is only 5'10" ( still taller than me, I'm so short :messenger_loudly_crying: ). He always looked so big in his movie so I thought he was like 6'2". I may have a height complex.

I wonder when he will blow up. He has been in so many action movies but he still is like a B list actor. Granted I like martial arts films and wish there were more.

Movie was OK, Chris Rock was fine.
I liked how it was set up like a murder mystery and they were investigating the murders. The problem is that the film telegraphed who the murderer was too early.
I didn't like the ending and the torture devices weren't that creative.

DragoonKain

Neighbours from Hell
Saw The Clovehitch Killer. Not really sure how to rate the movie, it had me interested the whole way, but I couldn’t tell how much of it was satire, if any was at all. I enjoyed it, but I don’t know how good I think it is if that makes sense.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Super Mario Bros - The Morton Jankel Cut (1993 / 2021)

Awesome movie, I've literally seen the original cut probably (no joke) 30+ times. My wife and I both absolutely love this movie, even though it's so bizarre that it's related in any way to the Super Mario Bros. gaming franchise. It's an awesome cyberpunk film though.

The Morton Jankel cut added a lot of much needed context here and there. While some of it was just extensions of existing scenes, there were a few totally cut scenes. It now makes sense why the devo chamber was full of slime, and that itself makes the ending make a lot more sense. An entire rap / musical number with Spike and Iggy was cut, which gives a lot more context as to why they suddenly want to help Daisy. We get to see what exactly happened to the Bros. jump boots (they were left in the elevator). We understand now why Iggy and Spike crashed their vehicle in the desert (it was apparently difficult to control). All these tiny things add up to 20 minutes more of one of one of my legitimately favorite films that actually makes it a lot more enjoyable.

Now if only they had secretly filmed the sequel before Bob Hoskins died...

Okay. That's good to hear. Like you, I enjoy martial arts movies. Fortunately, I get my fill on this side of the world.

You're right about his height. I always thought he was over 6ft tall. Surprised he's only 5'10". Actually, not that surprised, for the very reasons you noted. Now I have to track down a version of this movie with Thai subs. Maybe I'll get lucky, and Netflix will show it.

Croupier - 1998 - Hulu | ★

One of the best noir films I've seen, I can understand why it helped launch Owen's career. A nice steady, smoothly paced, odd pulp story about a borderline sociopath. Effectively sparse use of music. I very nearly gave this three stars since I think it's overly long and has a few obvious plot holes, but it's such a perfect conclusion for this character that I have to admit it's a rather terrific story as a whole.

Wrath of men fuck me that movie was good. not a single moment boring. Absolute top acting.

10/10

Really though?

Huge fan of Guy Richie in his early days, but totally lost interest once he went too Hollywood. Does this one fair that well?

I'll give it a watch if so.

Palm Springs was a surprisingly enjoyable film. I liked the humor and coming up with crazy ideas for spending time because of being stuck in a time loop. Yes the movie had to have a cliche ending because of technically being a romantic comedy, but it was still fun to watch. I wouldn't ignore it even if you think that similar comedies are only meant to be watched by women and couples. ;)

Recently I've seen:
Father 10/10. Fucking hell I've cried, wife cried, parents cried when I showed them the movie.
Quick and the Dead - nostalgia trip from childhood.... super fun movie. 7/10

Today I've watched Promising young woman and it was great. wow, really surprising.
The main actress was so fucking good too. 8.5/10. Maybe 9. I mean... this movie really is advertised as something else. Something worse. Maybe it's the title but WOW

Think ill leave father for now, I have to be in a certain frame of mind to watch films like

Just watched parasite for the first time, loved it, not been on a roller coaster like that with many films. Just so many things to take from it, i will say 1 thing though about the ending

I think it should of ended with the son seeing the morse code, and where he says son. Not just don't worry ill earn loads of money and save you, kinda the point of the film was aout class, and here the son just gets rich no problem, felt forced though

9/10, definitely something ill rewatch

Gladiator

This is one of those well known movies that I haven't seen, mainly because I always disregarded it as boring Hollywood fluff. Well, shame on me, because this movie was really good. In terms of epic and scale, you can't really do much better than Gladiator.

The action scenes are spectacular (and quite crowd pleasing, just like in the movie), mainly because they are done in camera, live action with practical effects. The story is very good, very emotional and moving, with interesting characters that you actually give a damn about. Joaquin Phoenix did a terrific villain, and showed what a great actor he is and what a range of emotions he can deliver. Here he is over the top, emotionally unhinged, restrained, sad, happy, mischievous, cruel, lovable. He stole every scene he was in.

The audio is stellar and pushed my setup to great lengths, it was as close to a cinema experience as I could get, with a great score and top notch sound effects. The cinematography was also excellent, capturing the look and feel of that particular era. I almost regret not buying this on 4K, even though the blu-ray edition looked very nicely.

Seriously, this was a fantastic movie and I recommend it to anyone who loves a great epic period piece (with lots of violence and blood) even though I suspect I may be the only person left on planet earth who haven't seen this masterpiece before.

The Silencing - 2020 - Amazon Prime |

The first half of the film is an engaging, entertaining, well-shot thriller. The second half slows down to a crawl and ventures deep into cliché territory. Jaime Lannister is really good in it, though.

Yeah, shame on you for waiting so long, but kudos for finally doing the deed. I saw this in the theaters when it came out, and as you noted with the audio, that opening battle is epic, and really sets the tone well. This is the film that put Joaquin Phoenix on the map for me. I've been a fan of his ever since.

A couple of randos this time, that I found entertaining, while being somewhat flawed.

13 Sins

Never heard of this one. One of those dives into human nature, and the things we're willing to do for money. I kind of enjoy these films that show a person gradually unraveling over the course of the runtime. I enjoyed Mark Webber's performance here. Ron Perlman has a supporting role in this, but kinda Perlman's his way through it. The story and Webber's performance drive this one. I didn't particularly like the ending, but that's mostly on philisophical grounds, and not necessarily narrative ones.

Xtreme (Xtremo)

This one is on Netflix. Basically, Spanish John Wick, with worse fight choreography. Now, you might be thinking, "why would I want to watch this, when John Wick is all about the fight choreography?" That's a question I asked myself, but besides this being a movie my gf picked, it also managed to have a compelling couple of big bads to drive the revenge story along. Oscar Jaenada plays a somewhat cartoonish Spanish mob boss who has history with the yakuza, and he manages to throw enough fodder at the main character to provide for some pretty entertaining fight scenes. While the fight choreography wasn't great, it's not bad. I liked it better than the hyper-fast cuts of a Bourne or generic Neeson flick. The final fight actually starts off with some rather impressive long-cut choreography, and apparently using the actual actors. So kudos deserved there. If you like watching a grizzled, old Spaniard stacking bodies on a trail of vengeance, this is a worthy watch.
