Definitely give Raid 2 a watch. A bit less frenetic than the first, but the fight choreography (especially towards the end) is better composed.

Way ahead of you boss, picked these up yesterday, all for £12, thats this evening sorted, The Raid 2 is 10/10 as well, odd that dog is in the second one, considering he died in he first, but who cares, he's the fight choreographer, so I get why

I just watched The Exorcist. Even dusted off my old blu ray player just to watch the dvd (25th anniversary edition). I could’ve streamed it but whatever. Didnt really plan on watching it just suddenly had the urge to put it on.

As a kid i remember watching it with my mum (and the other movies) I must’ve been about 7 or 8 at the time. I remember being terrified of it but obviously i never really took any of it in at the time so i guess this is my first proper time watching it. Honestly dont know why it took me this long…

Not sure if i will watch the other version of the movie or the 2nd + 3rd but i really enjoyed it.

So since I'm on vacation today I watched:

Woman in the Window
Oxygen

Both are great movies but honestly Oxygen surprised me in such a good way. Best Sci-fi I've seen since Arrival. Really damn good.

Oxygen (Netflix): 7/10
Freaky. The twists and turns get kinda excessive later on and you'll feel some whiplash, but a pretty cool concept overall. I enjoyed.
I watched Oxygen last night. I really enjoyed it. My only gripe is one that I have with a number of movies,
the stupid logarithmic clocks. What I mean by that is the oxygen meter slows down once it hits 6% O2 left. I understand that they wanted to shoehorn a collection of specific moments into that O2 level, but they had done such a good job of maintaining the suspense up to that point, with the regular rate that the meter was running down. I don't think they needed to slow down time like that. I think instead of skipping huge intervals between 6% and 20%, they could have just had it steadily reminding us that she was running out of air. Instead, we see her hyperventilating a few times while the meter was at 4%, but the meter ticked down to 3% and 2% so slowly.

Other than that minor gripe, the reveals in this flick are well-timed and well-though out. She actually suggested a solution that had never even crossed my mind, and I pride myself on being able to figure out movies and work solutions during them. It always makes me smile when a movie surprises me. Part of that is how the writers only reveal key pieces of information to you as the story progresses, so you're kinda figuring things out along with the main character. Bravo! Netflix is such a great investment for a movie junky like me. The quality of that catalog continues to improve.

Okay so I just watched Zach Snyder's army of the dead movie. Ultimately my thought on the movie is that it was meh. Really disappointed since I was hoping that this would change my opinion on Snyder movies. He is always a bit off on his movie for me. I like them but I always feel like if they had made a few more tweaks then it would be amazing. Issues with the movie would be the cast although diverse in characters weren't given enough room to really express it most of the time. The main character was boring and a pushover. Like seriously if your going to use Batista make him a complete badass in the movie. I think he has like one scene where he just straight up wrecks some zombies wwf style. The other characters have some flavor but they just aren't spicy enough in the movie. They really covered the diversity race card since they had all of them for the most part in the movie. The action was pretty good at times. They really allowed some characters to really shine in the knife or gunplay department. You can pretty much figure out how the movie is going end almost 15 minutes into the movie. The movie also dragged some times. They probably could have cut 15- 20 minutes from the movie. I'd give this movie a rating of C-. I'd say it was barely enjoyable.
Army-of-the-Dead-Characters.jpg

That's a shame. Snyder's Dawn of the Dead is easily, in my mind, the greatest zombie movie ever made. But that was a long, long time ago I suppose. He has obviously changed as a director.

Still, I love Dawn' so much there's no way I am not watching this.

I saw that in the list of movies he directed and I'm pretty sure I saw it but I can't remember a single thing about dawn of the dead.

edit: went and saw the trailer and I feel like i've seen it before but these zombie movies are starting to blend in to one another for me unless it is ridiculously unique.

I remember liking Carol a lot when I saw it. I was all, "Oh their love is so delicate and beautiful" etc. But then I thought, "Wait ... would I feel the same way about this movie if it was about two gay guys instead?" Probably not. So I don't know how much the fact that it was in small part softcore lesbian porn contributed to my opinion. But eh, I don't feel all that guilty about it. Solid movie.

Honestly, I wouldn't have watched it if it was about 2 dudes. Turns out I like romantic drama movies, specifically ones about lesbians, provided they have an emotionally satisfying end, which generally means the main couple ending up happy together.

I have noticed that a very common theme in lesbian movies is what I've dubbed "the magic minge" which is capable of turning straight girls gay.

I watched Those Who Wish Me Dead the other day and it was not very good. Actually pretty boring for the most part. So many typical things happened with a super generic story and characters.

I'd rather watch MK or Without Remorse again that this one.

Any Ben Wheatley fans? He wrote and shot a new horror movie in a week because why not. Very trippy quarantine woodlands horror, similar to A Field in England but present day. Not going to be everyone's cup of tea, I really liked it but I'm a bit of a fanboy of his.

Watched Sinister last night. Think i must’ve seen it back when it came out cause some of it was familiar. What a load of rubbish it was! Full of cheap jumpscares and “creepy” little emo kids and some guy from slipknot.

today i think im gonna rewatch midsommar directors cut and the witch.

I'm starting to question if I'm too harsh on the movie after reading tons comments and watching a couple of reviews for this movie. I was just expecting a lot more. So I'd say enjoy yourself when watching this movie.

Mulholland Drive

Finally finished it, and this movie is worth watching multiple times. Some scenes are worth watching dozens of times. There was one scene I didn't enjoy much until the very end of said scene. But besides that, this is one of the greatest films I've ever seen

Amadeus (1984)

I watched this movie literally a dozens of times, but this time - I watched with my 14 year old daughter.
I've been going thru some of my favorite movies with her off and on when she's with me - pop some popcorn and soda, and pop in the old DVD, not even Bluray.

This movie amazes me every time I watch. Storytelling, acting, costume, music and all - and leaves you with amazement. My daughter was quite taken by this movie as well.

The DVD that I have is so old (one of the earlier DVD releases) - that it's recored on both side of the DVD... so I actually had to flip it for the 2nd half of the movie. She got kick out of such old tech.
At the same time, I'm actually glad after 20+ years, this thing actually still plays.
Same with my old Goodfellas DVD. Have to flip that too :).
Amadeus is a fantastic film. Must give it a re-watch.

There's an unwritten rule that when a group of blokes of a certain vintage get together. At some stage of a conversation the Withnail And I quotes will start to fly.
This happened to me recently in a Teams meeting, suffice to say one quick visit to Amazon and the Blu-ray restored version is now in my collection.

It still holds up.
Like a fine wine.."the finest wines available to humanity"

if you haven't seen it, see it and then read Richard E Grants "Withnails" book.

Top level stuff for me. The semi-grounded sci-fi combined with the twisted hell-like elements really did it for me. Amazing grimey late 90s aesthetics as well, which I always love. Some of the imagery is incredibly gnarly, and I won't be forgetting those brief glimpses of the other dimineson anytime soon.

Also, Sam Neil is seriously A+ in this. I really need to watch more of his stuff. The rest of the cast are solid as well, and altogether make a pretty likeable crew.

Highly recommended for fans of the original Alien. Furthermore, If you want the movie equivalent of Dead Space this is the closest movie equivalent I've seen.

Yeah, kinda mirrors my thoughts. Passable popcorn flick, but nothing to write home about.

It frustrating, because there's something about Snyders style that tells me he has a lot of cool ideas and a unique take on things, but I think he's yet to make the movie that fully shows off all of that.

The books are incomparable to the movies. I think the cast selected for Harry Potter is nearly 10/10 but there have been many times where the directors have failed to recreate the greatness of certain moments in the books. PoA and GoF are the films that are most guilty of this, and disappointed the most. SS, CoS, and OotP (films 1, 2, and 5) have been fairly well adapted but I think the 3rd and 4th films could have been much better. Not to say that they aren’t good, but the directors definitely fucked up a few times; failed to replicate some important scenes. I especially take issue with the director of the 4th film. He butchered the beginning. He also completely missed out on a very important part of the story; entirely omitted an important character who played an incredible yet modest role in helping Harry Potter. But the director of the fifth film directed the following three Harry Potter movies I think so I’m betting the rest will be a great show
The 3rd entry is both my favourite book (my favourite book of all, I'm a little ashamed to admit...) and movie in the series. What do you think the director messed up in the movie?

This is a film, on paper, that has no business being this well made.

The final scene is cinema gold imo, you don't even have to have a remote Interest in jazz, to appreciate it

J K Simmons defining role for me, just perfect

Again another 10/10

I love the third book. I’ve read it twice; once around the time it came out and just recently in 2019. I still remember the first time reading. The excitement level of the last third of the book was unreal. Stayed up like two hours straight, late into the night reading. I remember feeling worried and nervous and exited all at once

In the film, the CGI with the Whomping Willow was very poor during the start of the exciting scene mentioned above. In the movie, time is an issue and you cannot do that high tension scene that takes place in the Shrieking Shack any justice. It was over in like 3 minutes and it I didn’t notice anything especially well shot tbh. Nothing stood out. I did think that Hermione’s back in time sequence with Harry was handled extremely, extremely well. Loved that bit. But the new Dumbledore didn’t really shine until Order of the Phoenix in the films. In the book for PoA, he was sort of guiding Hermione towards where she needs to be and go to change the situation. A very gentle, subtle, and genius guiding hand he was in the book. I can’t recall if that happened or not in the film, what do you think? I might have to watch these films all a second time. What I loved about movie number three was Arthur Weasley trying to teach Harry at the start, about Sirius. He was looking after him well, and being very cautious. I loved how the director handled that. But there was also a scene I hated. With McGonagle and a few others discussing Hardy in danger at Hogsmeade I think it was? That scene was terrible. I expected much more effort. Director in PoA was hit and miss. But with these films, you have to hit 95% of the time, there is very little room for error if you aim to live up to the reputation of the books

Watched an advanced screening of this last night. It was bigger, louder and dumber than the original; going for the Aliens follow up formula. It's solid enough and entertaining throughout but it didn't bring much new to the table and felt very by the numbers. Jump scares galore and very few true quiet moments. Still worth watching as a popcorn flick.

Whiplash is one of the first movies I recommend to people who I'm not sure what genres they like, because I can't think of anything to dislike about it. I can't always recommend slow movies, even if I think they're great, because some people have no attention span. Or comedies, because people have difference sense of humor. Or thrillers, because for some people they may be too convoluted who are too dumb to get it. Whiplash is an easy rec.

Finally got around to seeing Oxygen, and I really liked it. I liked what it ended up going for at the end, even if it's been kinda done before, I still enjoyed it.

Wrath of Man - cinema
Another great Guy Ritchie film that I personally can't fault. I like the twists that it sets up, especially the twist of who Jason Stathem's character is. The story structure is also cool, it's not a straight A to B narrative, it jumps back and forth a bit with different characters. And holy hell, the final set piece has some of the loudest and most aggressive sounding guns I've ever heard in the cinema.
Very good movie

A Quiet Place 2 - cinema

I loved this film too, not as good as the first but still really damn good. I have to disagree with Shrap Shrap because I feel that it did have quite a lot of quiet downtime moments. When the action kicks however, it goes straight to high gear and may be even more intense than the first film. Something that Chris Stuckman said in his review rings true, no matter how chaotic the action gets, the actors are always front and centre to that chaos, they are always the focus.
I feel like Emily Blunt's character didn't have much to do but that could be because Millicent Simmonds is the star of the movie and she was great!

The Sisters Brothers

Caught this on a whim last night, on Netflix. An enjoyable slow-burn of a western. 2 outlaw brothers tracking down a bounty, and encountering trouble along the way. Kinda like Bone Tomahawk, in that there's a bit of humor sprinkled about, with how the 2 brothers (Phoenix and Reilly) interact with each other. The cast is what caught my attention. Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed in a movie I never heard of? Yeah, couldn't push play fast enough. If I've learned anything, it's that almost everything Joaquin puts his name on is a quality watch. I was not disappointed. Netflix says it's leaving on June 20th, so maybe give it a look.

Whiplash has no filler, every scene has meaning and adds to the story and characters.

I cant think of a single complaint about whiplash. As said before the last scene is cinema gold, probably one of the brilliantly written end scene, considering there's like maybe like 20 words max said.

To see evny, revenge, ego, power struggle, respect and finally both achieving what the film told you they wanted through out, with hardly any dialogue is amazing,

Sorry to gush lol, its just so well done

Really good acting, surprisingly least of all by Hoffman, who was the reason I was interested in it in the first place. Good direction (Hoffman's only direction I'm aware of). Good writing, camera work, etc. But...

Ironically (and you'll get it if you watch the movie), it's like if you looked at a painting and said to yourself, "it's really pretty, but it just doesn't inspire me," and then come to learn it was done by someone who simply spent time learning how to paint over the summer -- they had talent but nothing (at that moment) to say from the heart. Some folks may feel and think completely different about the flick. That's just my two-cents worth.

My wife and I love Whiplash. Watched it with my mum a few months ago and she got bored during the final "showdown", she wanted it to end.
So there are apparently things to complain about in the movie.

Actually a very funny black comedy set during the end of the Balkan war. Acting is top notch all around, the story ends up being quite absurd in a good way, locations look amazing. I would call this a hidden gem.

Cruella (2021) Disney+

So earlier tonight I was watching my young niece, who decided to browse Disney+ and went berserk when she saw this was available to buy. I had no idea kids were still into 101 Dalmatians but I guess Disney movies are perennial.

I was bored to tears for the first twenty five or so minutes, but after that the story actually starts going places. Kind of an elaborate The Devil Wears Prada, twisted revenge tale. I can definitely see why little girls would like this a lot. It's definitely made for young girls and women. But overall I don't think it worked. It will probably be panned by critics.

Aside from that watching Emma Stone prance around in various dresses for two hours was a pretty easy assignment.

Been Re-watching a bunch of older movies lately and here are a few I watched this week that I would recommend if you haven't seen

Kelly's Heroes (1970) War Heist, Excellent cast, Great Mover

The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) Great Civil War Western, Definitely my favorite Clint Eastwood Movie

M.A.S.H. The movie (1970) All time Classic

The Sting (1973) It won 7 Oscars for a reason check it out.

Smokey and the Bandit (1977) REQUIRED VIEWING

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad world (1963) Maybe not for everyone but if you love old comedies this has a great cast!!
