After being on N4G for over 9 years I decided to take a look at Gaf. I have been lurking here when Goku started that Next Gen Speculation thread. I decided to join because it looks like a good place to have a discussion.

I know what you had to deal with over the past year especially in that thread that I was keeping my eye on. So I know your suspicious of any new members here. But not everyone is an alt. Some people really just want to join to participate in discussions here.

One thing that I can't really do on N4G is participate in lengthy discussions about rumors. Here I can do that.

I'm new to the site so I really didn't know Brap. But reading through your explanation gives me insight on how moderation works here and I thank you for that.

when i think about the lot of his posts, i laugh because his antagonism usually targeted ideas, not people (okay sometimes people, even i've been under the gun)

It's not about him from a personality perspective so much as how he was abruptly banned over a fairly innocuous meme in one of the console threads. After people naturally kicked up a stink here the ban message got changed to [Multiple] but frankly, Like a few others here I'm not particularly keen on the notion of Perms except for irredeemable shit/spam versus ever-increasing ban penalties (with a reset for long term sustained good behaviour). There's no lesson to a perm, there's just a loss.

Ask one person he says KZ's better, another says Uncharted looks better. Both are top of the chain games by quality developers. MW2 is also top of the food chain."

Having owned KZ2, MW2 is without doubt on the same graphical level as it. -- I didn't think KZ2 looked all that hot, honestly. But at the same level of graphics? REALLY? -- MW2 is based on an ancient game engine, with better prebaked radiosity and a buffed lighting engine. It looks pretty good...

Tbh I have no beef with brap - don't think I interacted much with him. I get people missing him, and the idea of not perming people, but I suspect that at a certain point a user becomes a lot of work (and from the sound of it that was the case here), and it's worth remembering the mods aren't paid to wade through our shit, so really if they're working on something and getting nowhere they may well feel that it's better to spend their limited energy elsewhere. None of this is intended to suggest any malice from brap or laziness from mods.

There's certainly a lack of quality in the threads - I suspect though that is to be expected as all the hype around new consoles kicks off. It doesn't happen too often so at least it'll eventually calm down and we can have somewhat deeper discussions than teraflop pissing contests. I simply don't bother entering those threads as I'm a PC guy anyway and just try to find interesting threads in the depths of the stuff past page 1.

For the rest of us - let's do what we tell people to do when they complain this place isn't active enough. Be the change we want to see. Make those interesting threads, talk about new games that interest you, or even old games you're playing or want to play. I'm sad to hear brap got perm'd. I'm like others that say he should be banned from the gaming section. But at what point do you draw the line? How do we know brap won't be as vitriol on other parts of GAF. I'd say that GAF mods gave brap plenty of chances. There's only so much you can do to help someone go in a certain direction.

The last step is a perma for sure. But why not give him one more chance and try to just ban him from the gaming section for now.

Although, I have to say, I don't understand console warring. To me, their the same hardware and it's more about the games. As long as the games are good, why the fuck do we even have to have a "war"? It's all so dumb to me.
