NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I haven't gone back to BC. I probably should give it another run.

That said, we need 5 nominations for January 2017, so gentlemen, start your engines and list some off!

Yeah, you need to try again. I also didnt care for it at first and it took some time to click, but when it did I loved it.

I nominate Metal Gear.

Yes! I live NES Metal Gear. Yes more than the MSX version. MSX games are too choppy.

Nice! I actually tried to play the MSX-game a few years ago, and didnt really like it that much either, but i was thinking for myself that if we do nominate Metal Gear Nes, than I will go through them both in january.

So D.Lo, what is your nomination?

Here's our list so far! Two more to go!

My copy of Bionic Commando came last Saturday, and I ended up playing through it the next day. In fact, I more or less played through it twice, but in my first playthrough, I missed a specific shot that you have to make towards the end, and since I missed I got a game over. I had dinner plans so I couldn't play through the last level again
Although it turns out if you get a game over at that spot, you start right before that.
. However, I completed it proper after I got back home later that night.

Great game. It took time for me to get used to how the hook works (which is probably why I've never got past the first level in the past), but it's quite an accomplishment how much control you have over it, especially on a controller with only two buttons.

I think the game's difficulty curve is little too inverted. The first level is one of the toughest, not just because you're still getting the hang of the hook, but also because you have little to no health, no healing potion, and plenty of enemies re-spawning on parachutes through solid concrete. Area 6 was also a pretty big difficulty spike, and I do think it's one of the less polished levels in the game, in that it requires very specific timing in order to grapple on the (what I think are) spotlights, and I could never get the timing right in order to dodge the spike balls.

I also thought it was kind of odd how easy it was to farm continues, especially since there's barely any variation in the top down stages and they become an absolute joke the more powerful you are. This is baseless speculation, but I wonder if there was a push from management to have a continue system to prolong the playtime value of the game (in order to combat the rental market), but the developers put in a way to farm continues as a way to sneak in a counter measure to that.

This small gripes aside, it's still a very fun unique game, where movement itself feels rewarding after grasping the mechanics, with the levels making sure you get to experience how great the movement feels.

I nominate Strider.

Just one more left!

Time to call around local gamestops to see if they have any in stock

I think employees are instructed to recommend Rare Replay on Xbox One if that happens

I think Gamestop's retro games are restricted just to their website, no? I don't think they sell any at any retail locations.

Lol.

You said you would love to do a YouTube playthrough of it. I'm calling your bluff.
I do, I just need to get really good at it as I need to master Stages 6, 7, 9, 11 and the last one, which are all a pain to deal with but I hope I'll manage.

A friend of mine and I are testing out a podcast about craft beer and retro video games. The basic idea is that we'll pair a beer with a game and then casually chit chat about both as we play. Our test/practice record was with a Houston-based pale ale and TMNT III.

I'm trying to find out if this would be interesting to other people, and if so, what would you like to hear from something like that? On our practice run we just talked about the Konami/Ultra connection, how some companies have similar sounding soundtracks even when using different composers and of course a little bit about the beer (pairing a lighter beer with an action focused game) and a little bit about the brewery it came from.

As someone who pairs craft beer and video games ALL THE TIME, this sounds like my jam.

Also, IrishNinja would probably be into this too.

I actually dont own Battletoads, time to fiction that.
Yes, you should though prepare for a hard as hell game.

I dont own Battletoads... I don't know if I want it though. Maybe I'll search for the Japanese version on Yamatoku, "BATTLE TODD".
The Japanese version is easier.

Isn't Battletoada too expensive? Looking like $50+ on eBay to me.
30 bucks on amazon and can be found 30 or less on ebay on my end.

It should be Battletoads just so we can show people that it's a lot fairer than it's given credit for. You get lots of extra lives, can even build up infinite lives in some places, there's warps, you can hit the rat every time it tries to pass you in the Rat Race to make the stage easy.

We just did Castlevania a while ago. I can beat Battletoads. I've never been able to beat Castlevania. Blaster Master neither. You can't get extra lives in Blaster Master.

This is true, and I always hit the 3rd rat to beat him, for the 1st 2 rats I don't have to hit them.

Here's what I'm seeing:

Amazon resellers don't post outside of north America.

Lowest price on ebay is US$27.22 plus postage and goes up rapidly from there.

Shit. Well, then I leave it to popular decision:

Do we replace Battletoads on the list?

The caveat is that if we replace it, it will never be voted on again.

Let me know by voting in here, I'll gauge response and when voting goes up tomorrow, it will or won't be on based on your votes.

I'm personally okay with it being included, I have a copy ;)

I was just mentioning it trying to keep the price rules on track.

I like the sound of this. I don't really have any input, I just enjoy both areas your podcast covers. Seems like you have a good basic formula down. Perhaps a comparison of the beer to other beers of the same style could be relevant. Keep us posted. :)

I can no death run Castlevania but have never beaten Battletoads. Sounds like I need to give it another shot

I just ordered one of those $27 copies of Battletoads yesterday, I say keep it on there!

I also suggest that Velinos' suggestion of Willow gets remembered for the february vote.

I was going to suggest we consider a game from the NES classic for an upcoming game of the month so more folks can play along, but I see I'm too late.

Unrelated, I think we can all agree that Zelda 2 is a top 3 divisive game for the NES haha

I would nominate Metal Gear from the current list, it would be nice to give it a proper playthrough.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to review our test record today before we decide to post it, we had a problem with the recorder and had to redo it and it really threw off the vibe so we may scrap it and just do a "new" first episode.
