[NEW] Gears of War - Video Interview

Anyone else think the duck n' cover gameplay might getting a bit old after a while? Seems repetitive.

If you want run and gun wait for resistance or UT or the next quake, if we were tired of it we probably would'nt be in the GEARS THREAD NOW WOULD WE:lol

it can theoretically happen, but why would any developer allow this to happen? They know the precise refresh rate of all their users' displays. It costs nothing to set an upper limit on framerates.

Dunno, but it happens. Also, I don't think capping the framerate is necessarily the same as vsync even in a perfect framerate. I've had times where I've had the framerate capped to 60 in PC games and gotten tearing tearing even though the framerate never deviated. Doesn't happen all that often but I've seen it happen in HL2 several times.

Or maybe you'll get a single torn frame once every 3.3 seconds?
haha, but no. i doubt they could even make that happen if they tried. :)

[edit] nevermind, i don't want to argue something so asinine as this.

From Sangreal (sp?) in the EGM thread. Gears is the cover story of the November issue of EGM.

Ok I've skimmed (sorry, its 5,000+ words) the Gears of War article

- Cover apparently shows off the curb-stomping execution move (think of American-History X)
- 8 Multiplayer maps. No word on DLC
- "We find out each of the eight multiplayer maps has a certain theme to it (Mansion: destructible cover with the ratty old couches; Gas Station: explosive sections of the level; and so on). Train Station's gimmick is a speedy locomotive that barrels down the middle of the stage every minute or so, killing everything in its path."
- When a teamate dies they enter a "bleeding out" phase where they can be revived unless the timer runs out or they are "executed". This is for SP and MP
- 3 Multiplayer modes (There may be more than these, I'm not sure. Though they do say no CTF or deathmatch)..
- Warzone: 4v4 Elimination
- Assassination: Your team needs to kill the opposing team's leader
- Execution: You must perform an execution mode to finish off your opponent
- Ranking is by points, not kills. "You do get points for each kill, but you also get scored for executions, reviving teammates, melee hits, chain saw kills, head shots with the sniper rifle, doing any type of damage, or grenade-tagging someone"
- Aside from the Locusts, you fight the Kryll who have an aversion to light. They only come out at night and there are parts of the game where you need to blow stuff up or light stuff on fire to stay in the light
- Reloading is a minigame (hitting the button again at the right time) which can give you a faster reload, damage boost, longer reload or jamming. You can choose not to play the 'game' though and just get a normal reload.
- Single-player achievements can be earned in coop

Achievements mentioned:
- The Nuge: Kill enough people with Torque bow
- Cluster Luck: Simultaneous grenade kills
- Is it a Spider?: Grenade tagging
- 100,000 online kills
- Collecting dog tags scattered around campaign

I like that the ranking is based on more than just kills, it stimulates a more interesting game if point distribution (for the different stuff) is fair.

100k online kills is pretty crazy, especially in 4v4 multiplayer.

WTF? 100,000 kills.... :lol
Better than the "rank #1 overall" bs that some devs com up with.

Cluster Luck. :lol For some reason, I love that achievement name.
Yes.. for some reason...

:lol

As I do plan on playing Gears a ton with Rayne (hey buddy :D ), I use him as my witness. I vow that when I get said achievent, to run into the mass of Gibs and yell "CLUSTER LUCK'D BITCHES". Just because.

Why do I imagine a character running around like a sissy screaming "Get it off, get it offa me!" wildy flaining his hands when he's stuck with a grenade thanks to that (Is it a Spider?) achievement?

Maybe it's the huge, extreme arachnophobe in me.
:lol

:lol!

That'll look great with the player voice to character lip syncing. :D

Everything sounds amazing so far, but I don't like the idea of getting a more powerful set of ammo just because you reload faster. I can see the benefit of reloading faster to get the jump on someone you are fighting, with the possible penalty of a jam or noise. But more powerful ammo? Does not compute. Everything in the game universe has been so well explained (why they wear such huge armor, but no helmets, etc.) that I'm scratching my head at this one.

Now all I need is a "dance" button. :lol
If all else fails, you can always do the curb stomp.

;)

We'll see how that carries over to the mp mode. I doubt the enhancement will be that significant.

Oh, that was aimed at Cliffy. Everytime I ask/complain about something, he answers it. :lol

The article says that it is toned down for MP, but I think Ghaleon was talking from an immersion perspective

Oh I'm aware, but it's still (possibly) a bigger deal in mp.

Lots of games take liberty with things like this to provide added strategy. I'm sure the came jamming/noise making issue was proposed first, then someone asked, "So what happens if you do it right? Where's the bonus?".

What was the given explanation for the armor and lack of helmets, just curious as i havent read anything about that yet.

Game looks amazing, can't wait for it, hope we see lots of great footage tomorrow.

Armor - the Locusts can take huge amounts of damage; they're really resilient. They could cut through soldiers while taking lots of shots. So in order to level the playing filed a bit, the guys in the game wear huge body armor.

Helmet - while the helmets were advanced with a HUD and all, they limited the peripheral vision. The guys wearing the helmets went down faster. Also, one of the main characters has an anti-technology streak in him.
