I love the original Independence Day but this looks as bad as 2012, San Andreas, and other disaster movies where 90% of the film is mindless CGI destruction.

Do people really sit in theaters and ooh and aah over this?

They won't. Because the first one wasn't great to begin with.

It needs to be its own kind of dumb fun. It can't just show up stupid and shrug.

The first movie was a hot mess, but it was still a novelty to see in cinemas because of its grandiose alien invasion premise and over the top dog fights. It was an impressive spectacle for its day, even though some of the optical effect shots don't hold up so well. But the movie was still an impressive display of model work and practical effects. Maybe one of the last big hurrahs before movies went deep into CG. It also had a pretty great score and some amusingly stupid-fun performances from actors like Will Smith, Goldblum, Pulman, and even Randy Quaid's character.

I don't even think I care what the reviews will be. I saw the original in the theater and it is still to this day one of my most memorable movie going experiences ever. People were just into ID4 back when it came out. The movie was big, dumb fun, and I still enjoy watching it today in that context.

I'm seeing this on the big screen no matter what any reviewer says!

The reviews were mixed to negative for the original movie, and most of the top critics of the day were thrashing it pretty hard. But people still saw it in droves.

It's fun to look at. No one is under the impression that it's mindful whatsoever. I also don't see how you could like the first and think this looks bad, it's the same exact shit but bigger lol

Seriously, if they picked up Dubai, and are dropping it on London, that's game over. Ultron would be pissed they ran with his idea (while Tim Taylor'ing it to the MAX)

Looks like the aliens have giant bio suits this time

This is either gonna underperform or be real big. No in between.

I definitely think it'll be an in-between of sorts. It won't do Disney stuff numbers but I think it'll reel in enough to where it won't be considered a flop or underperformance.

I loved the first one in the cinema! I was amazed by the effects back then as a kid. Will watch this too by sentiments and sometimes popcorn films are enjoyable..just switch your brain off and enjoy it as a kid again😌

I wonder if Goldblum will use an Android phone this time.

He'll have to since Apple won't allow his app on the store and the Mac Pro hasn't been updated in years.

Can't be any worse than a Transformers movie, and at this point ID probably has as much nostalgia factor going for it as that franchise did.

It looks like pure CGI spam-a-vision, but it's pretty fucking epic looking.

So, uh - in 20 years since ID4, we were able to learn how to use their technology to make the whole planet more sci-fi looking?

Impressive.

And I guess the President was re-elected to 4 more terms?

Movie looking too lordly. Day one.

Still waiting for the Will Smith cameo despite all the news of him not being there. He's really on the alien planet/ship.

Director Roland Emmerich mentions that the sequel is more complex and more dark...

So far the companies that are in charge of the ID Resurgence visual effects are :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weta_Digital
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scanline_VFX
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moving_Picture_Company
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinesite
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_Engine

You can also add Uncharted Territory to that list. They're actually the lead studio on this one.

He never got re-elected after the war of 1996. General Grey became the president after him I believe

The first movie was the Citizen Kane of Jeff Goldblum/Will Smith alien invasion movies involving the White House getting blown up.

I expect this to be no different.

I'm not feeling this. I saw the first one the day it came out in '96. It was really stupid and disappointing, despite the hype. This looks even dumber. This trailer reinforces that.

That's a very...niche genre.

Can I watch any other films that star Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith together during an alien invasion in which the White House gets blown up? Because I would.

Goddamn feels like I watched the cliffnotes version of the whole movie in this trailer.

I think deep down Will Smith wishes this kid was his real kid instead of that fuckin jackoff Jaden.

LOL what's this from?

I do. I love disaster movies (even the horrendous straight to SYFY flicks) or movies with lots of destruction involved. It's a guilty pleasure.

Looks good, looks better than the first even.

Not sure about the Earth getting to grips with that technology and rebuilding in just twenty years.

Also it seems that Data wasn't dead!
