Also, I don’t know, all my accessories are guaranteed to work on Scarlett and my game pass ultimate subscription being so cheap and best value in gaming right now that I won’t even have to pay for a single game at launch and have access to all of MS’ first parties. It’s easy to see why people would chose Scarlett over PS5 imo. Launch will be expensive at 500$ (most likely) so having a subscription service like that becomes very appealing to the masses.

Those were the days when PS5 was looked at as a mid tier option between lockhart and Anaconda by Xbox folks.
Now ... I love how x folks narrative changed from the "absolute performance leader" to " gamepass is the shit"

Guess what , there are more than 100m PS4 users with carried libraries that can be played on PS5 for free..no subscription needed.

Patent drawings are sometimes odd and ugly because they're not ready to reveal what it will really look like, but it's the idea here that is the focus - big honking whole-case heatsinks that would allow a lot of ambient airflow.

See for an example:

I'd love that idea for a console. Using almost all of its space for cooling, silent and high TDP.

That said, yeah, with the name misspelling, probably fake.

Eh, guy is japanese so i wouldnt take multiple romanised spellings as evidence of anything.

But a whole case heatsink from a block of aluminium with zero fans would be amazing.

The narrative change was astonishingly quick

Couldn't find the search function on that website.. . ah here it is

your browser might complain - works on IE though :) (and maybe MS Edge)

Found it under "Desenho Industrial" (Indsustrial Design) not patents, or trademarks.

People on resetera found more entries, BR 30 2019 002789 5 a controller , and BR 30 2019 002794 1 data recording (?) -- no pics right now
found this (pdf mirror)

I wonder if it has a relation with the other cooling patent

I don't want to stray too far from the thread but I've noticed a few people mention psvr. What's Sony's vr solution like? Was it a good call with regards to hardware spec? Was it enough? And did Xbox miss a trick there?

It works reasonably well on base PS4, easy to use and setup. On PS4 Pro it works even better as some games take advantage of its specific VR improvements and extra horsepower to improve IQ, performance, and draw distance. A good and solid foundation to start from :).

It depends who you ask. It was great as an entry VR solution compared to pc but of course not as powerful as vive or rift. However Sony did a hell of a job limiting the sde and have continuously supported it. I love my psvr and Astrobot is one of the best VR games around period it also has many other gems. Funny enough when Sony had tht psvr sale and ppl on here started buying it to try it even m o st of the naysayers loved it. That thread was lit for awhile with ppl praising it.

In this case it is a design patent, not "IP" - so the thing will definitely look like that .. (like a trademark design eg coca-cola bottle)..

Because of this I'm 100% certain the dev kit will look like that - there's no point making a speculative design patent for a dev kit .. which raises the question - wtf is that thing ?? those are ducts not heatsinks though - heat sinks that size with no fan blowing over .. seems unlikely

Q .. where is the APU in the case ? how does the airflow go around ? [edit - and where is the fan in that thing?]

The design doesn't make sense for a single hotspot at first sight - I can't really make sense of it right now. The only thing I can think of is that it sucks on one side, and blows out the other ..

I don't see designing around a hotspot as a major hurdle, see again the video with a similar concept in a PC I posted. 3:50, while there is a clear center, for a system with no fan the heat is surprisingly well distributed, they connect the components to heatpipes that go through almost the whole length of the case, and heat also creates some airflow naturally without a fan.

Explanation here:

So in the patent drawing I would imagine the APU is sandwiched somewhat close to the middle, but the heat is well spread through the whole heatsink-case.

I never thought about it that way. :pie_thinking:

So 2 heat pipes to each of the obvious massive sinks (not vents now) on either side and no big fan - the argument against is the extra inlets/outlets inside the V that look substantial but aren't obviously heatsinks .. Worth noting that Ootori's previous dev kit design had some minor decorative elements that don't seem to do anything, so maybe these too.

I think the inner V must have some purpose, not just to look awesome.

I'm just dreaming things up now, but my first thought was a fan cassette people can buy separately for a boost mode, rather than ambient cooling with bigass heatsinks.

Expansion pack is BACK, BABY!

I think that area in the middle could be saved for a small A/C unit add-on to let you OC to 2.5 GHz or more. Damn that's a good idea 👍

I certainly wouldn't do that, but I don't mind saying that I'd like it if Sony could at least in one generation design a console that doesn't look like a child's toy.
What do you mean? Which PlayStation looks like a toy?

As far as hardware goes, I think the differences between the PS5 and Scarlett will be about the same as the PS4 and Xbox One. Both companies have been working with AMD for years on this, I just don't see where one system will have a big advantage over the other when it comes to the hard drive, RAM, GPU or CPU.
PS4 and XB1 had a pretty big GPU difference that fueled the #ResolutionGate.

With this design Look like seperate CPU&GPU,
Hmmm, it reminds me of this rumor:

300W beast incoming?!

That is quite a big difference between ps4 and Xbone og.

If that was a dev kit indeed maybe Sony is really looking for a better design for colling or less noise idn.

Which one doesn't look like a toy?

I base it on how it fits in with my A/V set up, and I don't stand my consoles vertically, Over the years I've gone from closed cabinets to low level centers. If I put the console on top it meant I enjoyed having the device displayed. If I put it on a lower shelf or shut it behind the enclosure then it meant I felt it was too toyish or plastic looking.

That's where most of my PS' went. I know, strange love affair.

The Xbox 360 was the only Xbox design I didn't like in the beginning. And I HAD to put it out front for it's worrisome heat issues. But when MS released its slim designs I was proudly displaying them.

Always dug the design of MS' consoles. All business, fits right in.

Ewwww thnk God for opinions. Never dug Xbox aesthetics and idk how anyone could say PS's look like toys, that comment lost me. I do like however how my Xbox one s looks in white.

I think you confuse Sony with Nintendo (even though I'd argue Switch is the 1st Nintendo console that doesn't look like a toy).

PS2/3/4 definitely don't look like toys IMHO. PS1 perhaps, but you gotta consider the Nintendo heritage in that console (SNES-CD roots).

The corner of the Blu-Ray drive is going to get hot though .. really hot ..
games wont play from the disc and the apu can be further back near the vertex
Appears to be the area with most concentrated airflow
Eh, to me that looks like the heatsync is on the bottom which fits the PS4 RAM Config which is on the bottom of the board. I’m not saying it’s not that way on the PS5, but just an observation.
you are right, on closer inspection i think big flat heasink could be on the bottom and fans on the sides?

PS2 was the PS design I liked best. Even MS copied that design for the Xbox One X. And look at it, all business. All business in my set up.

When I look at PlayStation aesthetics over the years I really wonder what they're trying to achieve. It's a personal thing though. I know a lot people love it.

My other components are praying right now that that patent concept isn't coming to join them. I already love you PS5, but I'll put you on a bottom shelf behind a cabinet door if that's what you end up looking like.

And for God's sake please don't let THIS happen

What would you prefer:
  1. Industrial design but TDP limited <200W
  2. Ugly but practical design that can handle a >300W TDP
I'd take option 2 any day

This devkit being such a departure in design from old ones makes me think the cooling setup is like a trial run for the retail unit. Otherwise why go through the hassle of making anything other than another big rectangular box.

the entirety of any narrative right now is 100% conjecture. the PS5 could be substantially weaker for all anyone of us knows

GREAT point! There must be a very important reason why they'd go through the extra cost and time to make a funny looking dev kit.

What the fuck are you even talking about? There is no narrative here, gamepass will indeed give you all first party launch titles for cheap while you’ll have to pay 60$ for every game on PS5. People won’t care about their old library when buying the new consoles, they’ll want the new games. You also forget that in those 100 million, most only buy a game or 2 a year and won’t care about it carrying over to next gen.

You are the one pushing some kind of narrative. Did you see me bring up anything about power? Especially basing this off of fucking rumours no one can confirm, as far as we know both consoles will be exactly the same power wise at launch.

Whoa tiger lol 😂 take it easy 😂😂😂😂 he didn't disrespect your momma.

BTW those first party titles like recore, sea of Thieves. Crack down 3, State of Decay are trash wrap compared to what the competitor is offering and aren't worth it at all. With a sprinkle of Gears, Forza and Halo it's just not enough. I'll keep paying my 60 and enjoy those heavy duty goty contenders you only find mainly on PS while Microsoft is focused on bringing mid tier mediocre shit to game pass because they've canaballized their sales offering subscriptions for 1 dollar every two months or so. Gamepass isn't all positive and I had it and most of those games weren't of interest and I dropped it. It's not about a subscription or how many exclusive games you have on it, it's about the quality of exclusives games on it and others.
