Dang I didn't know VC got delists as well. That should not be acceptable on a modern digital marketplace

On the contrary, "delistings" are a natural part of the modern digital marketplace.
It's easier than ever for a company to just press a button and have something just disappear completely.

Nothing can be done about it sadly. Happens on all markets. Sometimes, if a company goers under, their digital stuff has to be removed, since noone to pay checks to/etc.

That has nothing to do with acceptable or being modern. If licenses run out, license holders close or whatever, the associated software gets pulled. That's how licensing works.

Contracts should be worked out properly. Old stuff is a bit of an exception but this isn't 1990 where games will be effectively off the market within a few years, secondhand only forever more. Contracts for games should be for life or they shouldn't bother at all.

If you want "for life," that 1990 secondhand stuff is what you want.

Get used to this stuff for the future going forward.

But this is not how the real world works. "Hey you can sell the software that we own on your store forever even if we don't actually own the license to it anymore or if we no longer exist and your checks all get sent into a dead mailbox."

Here's an example of a not-old-game, Kokopolo on DSiWare and the reality of that situation:

Even though my company, Tanukii Studios Ltd (basically just me at the mo ;) ) owns all the rights to Kokopolo, the company that helped publish the game was/is called Room 4 Games ltd. They are based in Hungary, but in order for us to work together on the game, they had to set up a company over here in the UK. Their UK company was the one who had the contract with Nintendo to release the game on the European and USA DsiWare and eShop stores, so basically they are the publisher of Go! Go! Kokopolo.

After 3 years, as sales started to dwilndle to about a handful a month, it seemed a little counter-intuative for them to keep their company open only to get the revenue from the sales, whereas in actual fact, is was costing them more on the company insurance to keep it open, than they were making.

They chatted to me, and asked if it was okay to pull the game from the stores, so that they could close down their UK company, and concentrate soley on their Hungarian company which is much easier for hem, as that is where they are based.

Licensing is why the "Digital Future(TM)" is a bad future.

It's a necessary evil, so to speak.

And Digital Future is a good future; without it Kokopolo would never have existed ever.

That's the complementary kind, a.k.a. the Digital Now(TM). Not the Digital Future(TM) (= digital only!) I'm referring to.

Did I ask y'all for Wii VC recommendations recently?
ETA: I should also mention that the DKC trilogy is something I haven't really played.

OK! All of these I consider great games and I'm sure you're bound to find something good that you haven't tried before among them. There's gotta be YouTube videos of all of these so look them up and see what seems more interesting to you right now.

There're some great games on WiiWare that don't get as much attention as they should. All the ArtStyle games are great puzzles by Nintendo / Skip; I specially like Orbient and Rotozoa. Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth is probably the best WiiWare game and you've already seen me praising it, I think. Cave Story is amazing, in case you haven't played it yet, but a different version might be a better choice by now. Fluidity is great and so is ExciteBike World Rally. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles My Life as a King and My Life as a Darklord are worth checking out. La Mulana is excellent, give it a look. Let's Catch is an interesting, relaxing game and I like it, so check it out if you're up for something different. LIT is an interesting puzzle game with progression, like you put it, although I admit that I haven't played it nearly enough to say if it's actually above simply a good game, but look it up. Mega Man 9 and 10 are obvious choices, specially 9. Pokemon Rumble is a cool game, specially for multiplayer, but again you might wanna check the other versions. Someone wrote about Snowpack Park in one of your threads here so you probably already know about it's charms. That's all I can remember now...

The Adventures of Lolo games are cool puzzle / adventure games by HAL that you might like; I don't know which is one is considered the best but I'm sure someone here will gladly help you with that. The Ninja Gaiden games are amazing, specially the second one which I played a lot when I was a kid. Faxanadu is a classic sidescroller RPG (kinda like Super Paper Mario, Ys 3, etc), with a great soundtrack and a lot of style.

On SNES, as you obviously already know, the DKC trilogy is among the best and you should definitely look into it once it's made available again. Mystical Ninja is among my favorite games ever, has great music and graphics, plays really great and has great humor, so give definitely give it a try if you haven't already, you won't regret it. You've probably heard a lot about ActRaiser already and it deserves the praise it gets. You've played Mario RPG already, right? Super Punch-Out is incredibly fun.

On the N64 Virtual Console, aside from the obvious choices, Wave Race 64, 1080 and F-Zero X are among the best of the best of racing games. Pokemon Snap is awesome and Pokemon Puzzle League is a version of Panel de Pon, the best puzzle game ever created.

Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier are amazing action games on Genesis. Alien Soldier doesn't kid around and demands serious skill and full attention, so take keep that in mind if you're looking for something more relaxed; GH is much more accessible and a LOT of fun. Mosnter World 4 is a cool game and easilly among the best looking on Genesis. Shinobi 3 is really cool, definitely look into it.

PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 VC has a ton of great games that are often overlooked. Bomberman 94 is a fantastic puzzle game that I think you'll like, it's got a lot of charm and I love it. The Bonk games are good platformers that you'll probably be interested in; they're more like the Wario games than Mario and I've never really gotten into them but they're definitely worth checking out. Shockman is an interesting MegaMan-sort-of-clone. You should really look into Dragon's Curse, it's an amazing game that I wish I could have played as a little kid, and this is the best version. Devil's Crush and Alien Crush are cool pinball games. Neutopia 1 and 2 are good Zelda-likes, if a bit simple, but I haven't really played them all that much so please dont' take my word for it. You've read all about Castlevania Rondo of Blood in these threads by now.

There are a lot of great games on Neo Geo Virtual Console, specially fighting games. Give special consideration to King of Fighters 95, Last Blade 2, Samurai Shodown 2 and Metal Slug X.

I never can remember what's available on what Virtual Console and always have to look up the wikipedia list, so I don't know which of these are available only on Wii. Sorry about that. I always get a bit carried away making these lists. Leaving all the cool shooters out was hard, man, but you've already heard me rant about those, I guess...

What does ETA mean? I always thought it was short for Estimated Time of Arrival >_<

LIT is good. It's by Wayforward. Was their first WiiWare game, IIRC. Interesting use of the Wiimote, too!

Lost Winds 1 & 2 fit the Nintendo-like puzzle platformer mantra well. Just need the rest of the games to eventually be made ... :(

World of Goo is all puzzle but still good.

NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits is a good puzzle platformer that uses the Wiimote well.

What's better out of SMT IV, Devil Survivor Overclocked (currently £10 until the 18th) and Soul Hackers?

Also, has anyone played Zenonia? It came up as a suggested title and it looks fairly interesting for a £7 game.

Edit:
Dang I didn't know VC got delists as well. That should not be acceptable on a modern digital marketplace

Tetris on 3DS and the Virtual Console version is being delisted on 1/1/2015 too.

Played it. Finished it. It's a grindfest. Major, major, grindfest. The actual game parts are fun and pretty good. Just intermixed with minutes/hour of grinding levels to make the next sections not totally overpowering. Controls well, graphics good, just a major grinder. Pretty well sums it up, I think.

Soul Hackers and Devil Survivor both show their age a bit but are very good games in their own right. But SMT IV is probably a step above both, especially in terms of presentation. All three are worth a playthrough if you are interested in Megaten games.

Cool, I might consider getting it at some point.

SMT4 by far.

That said, Devil Survivor and Soul Hackers are both super good.

Yeah, the fact Devil Survivor uses sprites was a big tip off. Thing is, I've never played any of the Megaten games and in general I don't like the first person perspective for battles (much prefer the side-on view) but I've been itching for a good RPG to play on my 3DS.

I'm patient though, I'll wait for SMTIV to go down to £10.

If you are new to the series I'd definitely recommend SMTIV. Soul Hackers is more aimed at people that already like the original, or fans of the series that are interested in the history of it. Devil Survivor is a nice spin-off but not really representing of the core franchise's gameplay.

SMTIV has a pretty curshing start, especially if you are unfamiliar with the battle mechanics, demon system and terminology of the series. But the difficulty evens out quite a bit a couple of hours in and the game overall is one of the more streamlined and beginner-friendly entries in the series.

Regarding 1st person perspective: I wasn't too fond of it either a couple of years ago, coming from purely console gaming and getting back into handhelds. Nowadays I'd say I prefer it, especially for turn-based battle systems. It's just so much faster. When you consider how much time you spend in loading screens, camera zooms/rotations, overly long animations and battle results screens, the 1st person view might appeal more to you.

In an ideal world we would have the choice between styles in battle presentation and lots of options to skip, speed up or turn off, sadly not many developers think of those customisation options in their rpgs, or have the budget/time to work on it.

I sent off the next patch of ZaciSa (Wii U) on Monday. Includes 60 FPS gameplay, 3 new maps, and other stuff.

Doubtful it will be released this month, but you never know.

Hey, don't diss sprites, especially on the 3DS where 3D graphics leave a lot to be desired. Both SMTIV and DeSu use sprites for battles and since DeSu is an isometric SRPG I really don't any benefits in making the environment 3D.

Anyway, I haven't played the other two games but Overclocked is amazing and well worth its full price. Now that it's discounted you shouldn't even think twice about getting it.

If Shantae comes out on Wii U this year, will get it there for DDP. If not, will be getting it for 3DS sometime next year. Hope it comes out this year for Wii U, though.

Crash 'n' the Boys is a weird pick to get so much VC love. Someone needs to remind them of their Sunsoft agenda, they seem to have forgotten about it (or they ran out of licences which I refuse to accept).

I like Kunio-kun games, but never played this one. Is it worth picking up?

From what I can remember, it's basically Track & Field with a Kunio-kun touch (= fighting, shops, wacky faces). Aside from River City Ransom, I'm not too fond of the series, honestly. Even Dodgeball is blegh to me (barring the energetic soundtrack).

I'm sure someone who played this as a kid will wholeheartedly recommend it, though. Not that I would disagree as strongly as I would with, say, someone claiming Nintendo World Cup wasn't terrible. :p

Now you got me scratching my head 'cause all three games that you mentioned use sprites... And Devil Survivor is one damn good looking game. But get SMTIV first, it's the best entry point and the best game (but it's not gonna hit $10 anytime soon).

Hey, if it weren't for your Ko Takeuchi avatar, we'd be having a serious talk right about now xP Anyway, I never played Crash 'n the Boys as a kid but I think it's a cool game, really funny too. But know that Nintendo World Cup is several kinds of awesome and I'll fight you on that if you ever happen to change your avatar.

I can't even begin to tell you how bad NWC is. I was shocked - shocked! - when I found out about people's love that game. Konami Hyper Soccer is where it's at on NES! (Captain Tsubasa, too, prolly.)

Consider the avatar love reciprocated at least. :p <3

This reminds me, I was always bothered by the lack of game-related conversation in the retro threads. It's like 99% hardware talk in there. If I curated a NES thread, I would try and incite some discussion, maybe do a 'game of the week' sort of deal or something.

So I guess I should make the announcement here, I am interviewing social community manager CeeCee from Natsume next week and if you all have any questions, I'll try and ask them to her.

Ask about their old NES and SNES games they licensed from Taito and if we'll see them on Virtual Console. Specifically Lufia II and Pocky & Rocky.

Ask her about Harvest Moon 64. I just want an answer that isn't the word "impossible."

Also, Lufia.

Wouldn't we need N64 VC in Wii U for this to even occur?

Nintendo will be overcome by the demand for it and rush N64 Virtual Console compatibility on the Wii U, obviously.

Seriously though maybe the question would more be something like, just what got in the way of bringing Harvest Moon 64 to the Wii Virtual Console.
