Nintendo sells 1.2 million hardware units (400K Wii U, 300K Wii, 275K DS, 250K 3DS)

I don't get Wii and ds still selling, are they really much cheaper? Because it makes no sense to not get the new hardware when it has full backward compatibility.

Why is this concept so alien to you guys? It's been happening since the NES.

That's one thing I've noticed about some posters on this forum - it's not so much of a condescending attitude towards people without a lot of disposable income, so much as a complete lack of awareness that they exist. You see it in the Wii U / SDTV thread - people say, just buy an HDTV! Geez, a few hundred bucks is still a lot of money to many people.

One stat I bring myself back to time and again is that median household income in America is right around 50k. 40% of households make less than 38k (in fact, the mean income for the second lowest quintile is 29k).

Personally I'm lucky and don't live paycheck to paycheck, but lots of people do. A 90 dollar Wii, with a ton of games available used for $10-$30 bucks, is a boon for those people. They're the same people who bought their kids and themselves PS2's years after the 360 released. I don't understand the dismissive attitude of "get a different hobby." Film lovers can spend tens of thousands of dollars on the perfect home theater, but anyone that wants to see a movie can still catch a matinee.

I think outside of a scary 3DS number, Nintendo's got to be pretty happy. Wii and DS sales have got to be crazy profitable for them and Wii U seems to be right inline with what was expected.

They dropped the ball with Holiday software for 3DS, though. The price drop may help, but I doubt it.

Can't remember how crazy bf sales had gotten around 2006. This time around I saw basically no mention of the wiiu in any of the major retailers bf ads -- they were pushing the door busters and such as hard as they can, $199 ps3s and 149 Xbox and 89 wiis. A customer would have had to known that the thing was coming out, else it would be out of their radar.

I expect them to start addressing the Vita and its various issues (price etc.) next year.

There's just too much competition this holiday season and whatever steps they take will just be lost in the mix.

Yes it's very reasonable to think that next year they're going to relaunch the whole platform with new key games, new hardware revision and a sub 200$ price, but in any case Vita will never be a smashing hit, the market is completely changed, they will be lucky if they can achieve N64 like success, the point is to try to create a profitable niche for them and a platfrom with a meaningful userbase for third parties to publish their games on.
But imo Sony should better be thinking about new products like a Playstation tablet, something like a Galaxy Tab that also has Psone,PSP,Vita and PSN compatibility.

Well, these are only US figures for now, apparently.

Also, handheld market is dead in America. Never again will we see DS/GBA sales numbers.

I can't say that it's dead for sure, but it is definitely lacking in terms of software so far. There's nothing on either handheld systems out right now that I must have. I also see it as a mistake that Nintendo released Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 on the DS rather than the 3DS.

not calling it that or Wii 2 was a really, really dumb move

My sentiments exactly. A lot of my Facebook friends were confused when I posted up a picture of my Wii U. They thought it was a peripheral for the Wii...

Seriously? Get a Wii for 99 bucks or less or get a 300 dollar console with nothing but 60 dollar games?

In Wii's case it's $140 or less vs. $300 and Wii has larger library of cheaper games.

Agreed. Also, delaying Animal Crossing was stupid.

NoA has no one to blame but themselves for 3DS sales. What do you expect when you offer massive discounts on DS hardware on Black Friday, and do jack shit to stir up interest in the 3DS?

There are better margins on the DS I'm sure so they want to balance out the profit of that versus the loss on the Wii U hardware. The 3DS is in it for the long haul -- remember that the GBA was still sold heavily during the first few years of the NDS.

Wii U numbers are alright. Console launch months are typically not that spectacular, and while I have seen units in stores this past week (mostly basic units), there are never huge piles of them.

The real story here is the 3DS. If Nintendo only sold 250k units on Black Friday, what are we expecting for the entire month? 400K tops? That's pretty horrible.

400k Wii U and it still hasn't sold out, not good numbers. I'm not surprised though. I bet 20% of the sales are from scalpers.

3DS cost only $30 bucks more and has full BC with DS and still DS sells more. Really damn puzzling. Are people still confusing these two devices?
At least at the Targets I've been to, most of the 3DS games are mixed in with DS games, so yes, I think it's safe to assume that there is still confusion between the two.

Is it true that Nintendo sent out more WiiU's to retailers than they did with the Wii?

This is pretty mediocre for the WiiU then, if that's true.

Next handheld? I have some pretty bad news for you...

That's not even close to a foregone conclusion.

If Nintendo doesn't significantly reevaluate its approach to hardware and software pricing, though, I can definitely see 4DS or whatnot doing Vita numbers.

Damn I need to get someone to buy me a Wii U, because I couldn't find one yesterday.

I do believe Nintendo when they say they are replenishing stock more frequently. I noticed a couple of times over the last week that they would be sold out and then on my next visit there would be a shelf full. I'm sure if you keep checking, it will be fairly easy for you to find one over the next week or two especially.

I think, tbh, everyone is going to have to get really careful about how they present new platforms. In a post-iOS world people might come to think that the software platform is the same between devices, with the hardware just offering a different set of features on that platform. iOS and Android etc. might be conditioning people to think like that.

Or maybe that's crediting the smartphone rise with too much influence...

So I guess the question is:

Pick up a Wii-U now, and get in on the inevitable ambassador program when they cut the price in a couple months.

Or.. wait for the price cut?

The best option is wait for the price cut. When the 3DS' price got cut, walmart started selling it for $169 the week before the official price cut, so you could effectively get a $169 3DS AND get into the ambassador program.

Wii doing well bodes well for PS360 surely?

PS3 bundles sold out quickly everywhere. It was really the best bundle available anywhere in gaming IMO ($199 with 5 great games is a superb deal). However, I saw 360s getting bought in droves. Really, every other cart in the gaming section had a 360 in it. My point is IDK lol but I expect the 360 to come out on top in November, surprised MS hasn't put out a PR touting its numbers yet.

Let's wait for NPD so we can get real numbers.

I think these are ok. Not a massive failure or anything, but not as good as they could be.

I do think that Wii U is getting hurt by its legacy system's sales, unlike the original Wii.

DS outsells the 3DS?! 3DS down 50% YOY? Bad bad bad. Handheld market is officially dying in NA.

Wii U sales are worrying, assuming the initial shipment is more than that of the Wii. Does not bode well at all.
