Nintendo statement on lack of adaptor in NA.

Yeah, I always gathered that any small charge is bad for a company. To validate you are an adult, wouldn't it make more sense to require some sort of government issued ID? Then they could trace the info that way. That is how casinos do it. You don't need a credit card to gamble.

You... want to give out your state ID? On the internet? May as well just fill our your SSN.

I fear the day when everything we buy doesn't include essential parts just because "hey it's only $10 or less! Stop crying!"

I hate you people who are this kind of consumer.

It's just stupid as hell that we have to buy a separate charger at the retail store where we buy the 3ds. If they don't have it we'll have to order online and wait for it to ship. If we want the charger to be there when we have the handheld in hand, we'll have to order online however many days prior to the launch. Etc. Etc. This is all just extra hassle for the customers who keep Nintendo in business.

Dear consumer, if not for the lack of charger, this package would have retailed at $200.99. Please understand, this allowed us to charge $199.99.

No, but really. How many people remember the days of nothing coming with batteries? Like, every time I got some new gadget as a kid (and even some as an adult) I have to buy more batteries for it.

Because that's totally the same thing.

Y' r'member them days when we use'ta have candles t' light up the house? Those were th'days, m'boy. Wait, what were y'talkin' 'bout again?

So does that mean we can buy it for the 79 cents it would have cost them to put it in the box?

Bingo.

Was thinking of picking one up for puzzles and dragons but I'm reconsidering. It would be understandable if it wasn't a proprietary plug. Still pissed when I found out my Galaxy S 5 has one but at least it came with the charger.

Wait, S5 doesn't use micoUSB?
News to me since my S4 uses one. Thanks for the heads up.

Since you edited because you thought of something smarmy after the fact...

Most things still don't come with batteries. Shit, you have to buy them for Xbox controllers.

Those savings for an AC adapter that probably costs Nintendo $1. Yeah, sure you couldn't include it without raising the price.

You're right, it's worse! Most things that require batteries (of the AAA/AA kind) don't work at all without them! Most electronics at least turn on (hopefully) without a charger. At least for a little while.

Yeah except most electronics come with batteries now down to remote controls. Nintendo doesn't seem to want to get with the times. My drone I got for Christmas came with batteries, every TV remote that I've ever gotten with a TV has come with batteries...

Add to that most families I know had and still have a box of batteries lying around. Not so many families just have 3ds adapters lying around.

I hope this shit backfires on Nintendo hard. I can't believe they even got Reggie to say it on camera like it wasn't a slimy business choice.

I dunno i find it real hard to get upset about any of this. I guess im sheep?

The adapters are common as dirt and cost less than $10 most places. And I would bet that 8 of every 10 New 3DS XL they sell is to someone who already owns a 3DS or DSi of some type in the past.

it's the principle of it all

Well, i will not get the new 3ds until it comes with AC adapter, this is a cheap move from Nintendo and i do not like when companies say they are doing something for consumers benefit when is totally for get more money from them.

It's fascinating to see people defend this.

If it's a cheap and minimal additional investment, why didn't Nintendo include it?

If it's substantial enough to change the price, why not provide a cheap alternative when redesigning? Like a usb to proprietary cord or a standard charging port that so many have mentioned?

Proprietary and cost prohibitive seem like a bad match.

Wait, is this a matter of having an excess of these chargers around?

While not entirely related, a large portion of printers do not come with USB cables these days. My router doesn't come with an ethernet cable. Lots of electronics don't come with necessary bits'n'bobs required to make them function!

While it's undoubtedly shitty, it's not a new practice.

The comparison would be if your printer and router didn't come with a power cord. Which they did.

Most printers and routers are wireless now but it is shitty that they don't have wired components.

I just bought a router, it came with a fucking Ethernet lol.

I'd say it's a hard 1:1 comparison to make because bigger electronics require more than 1 type of cord to function. IE: A power cord, ethernet cord, USB, etc. It doesn't matter if it has a power cord but it needs a USB to actually fulfill it's intended function. The same kind of inconvenience exists!

A number of electronics, especially higher-end ones, don't come with all of the cables necessary for it to work out of the box. They assume you'll buy it seperately or have spares lying around.

Cool! I'm glad yours did. Not all do, though. Which was my point. :) Anecdotes are great, y'know? I'm glad you shared that with the class.

I'm saying that it is standard for including an Ethernet and power cord with a new router. Kind of like including a power adapter for a handheld. The standard doesnt change because Nintendo decides to fuck consumers over even further.

The Church of Nintendo is the reason Nintendo belives its ok to pull shit like this.

The adapter isn't some exorbitantly priced addition that would have sent the price skyrocketing. It would have cost them literally less than a dollar($1, 99 cents, 1/100th of a benjamin) to add. Do you guys seriously think it costs them $200 to manufacture and package that n3DS?

They are not saving you any money.

Then when this shit comes back to bite Nintendo in the ass you guys are just going to sit there playing the victim and blaming the rest of the industry for Nintendo's woes.

It's ridiculous.

Were you this mad when Sony charged you for PSN?

The Xbox One controller that came with the (Call of Duty) system included batteries.

It's like Nintendo knows the only people who are gonna buy a "new" 3DS are the people who already own the old model this is ridiculous

That's the idea. Nintendo's press statement made no attempt to disguise the new 3DS as marketed for existing owners.

Any sales beyond those people are icing on the cake.

Any reason why they never used a usb type of adapter like many android phones? More people probably have those than old 3ds adapters.

You know, you gave me an idea for a third party product. Make an adapter that powers with a regular USB cord. Of course, that adapter would need to do some power conversion but I don't think it would be difficult though.

They are pretty clearly not saving me money when the adapter is around $20 and the handheld cost this much for me

Assuming I take advantage of the trade in deal, that knocks it down to around $200 which is pretty hilarious.

They add an actual value to that purchase so its not as bad. Plus if you just want to watch Netflix or whatever you Dont have to buy PS plus.

Nice. When I buy the new 3ds I get a circle pad and a 3d screen that works a lot better for the same price as the old XL. I don't get an adapter but it's all good, I have 5.

This is not necessarily the case now-a-days as routers and printers are generally wireless devices now and can function just off the power cord instead of depending on the additional connection of the ethernet and USB and most computers and laptops purchased come with a wireless adapter.

But based on your anecdote, I'm assuming your printer and router were seemingly not wireless and you did not have a wireless adapter on your computer?

If I use the trade in deal do I have to trade in my adaptor?

Nope, I honestly can't remember the last time I bought an electronic gadget that didn't come with all the chargers, power cables and interconnects to get going. That includes modems, routers, blu ray player. Shit son, everything except my 3DS!
