I'll continue to light my torch and be angry, you can chuckle all fucking day and be a corporate apologist. Everyone wins.
They've been posting losses because of including that damn ac adapter in North America!Proprietary as in exact same one as the DSi,DSi XL,3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS used (i,.e, previous 5 systems used). It is a shame as they could have used this new system as an perfect time to move to USB like everyone else is doing. Nintendo do use USB on the Wii U Pro controllers (and provide cables) so it isn't like they're ignorant.
That same company has been posting losses for the majority of the past few years...
Shipping costs, my original 3ds box is 23x16x7.5cm my new 3ds xLbox is 18x13x3.5cm. Adding a charger means the box size increases a ridiculous amount. They save a ton of money by having it separate. Not to mention a lot of people are upgrading (of the 8people in front of me when I bought mine 7 were upgrading) so explain to me why Nintendo should waste money on shipping so a handful of people dont have to walk an extra 5 metres to pick up the ac adapter?
Not only scummy but also seems borderline illegal.

And watch, Gamestop will want your charger (if you want the full credit) when trading in your old 3DS
Honestly? I think it's because of the box size. I'm going to pull this from another poster
There you go. Shipping costs. Why they didn't say this instead of what they said I'll never know but, when placed in this context, yeah, I get it. I might not like it, but it's bullcrap that shipping is so expensive anyways.
Not that it's going to stop you guys from screaming "worst company eva!!" and demanding it be pulled apart for a $5-$10 charger but I've grown used to this by now.

But they have to ship standalone adapters.
Corporate apologist? Let's calm down here for a sec and realize that just because I'm not at the point of insane outrage doesn't mean I'm totally cool with this.
I've stated several times that its a stupid maneuver and pretty cheap of them, but at the same time I shrug my shoulders and realize that $8 isn't going to break me when my other opportunity costs with other handhelds/mobiles would be far higher. It's an economic decision I've calculated and made.
I just find the passion-play level of overreactions to be a bit much. And I think that's a fair criticism. I understand that you're upset but I honestly am struggling to grasp how you think government intervention is required over an $8 AC Adapter. That to be frank is just absurd.
Oh that's cool that you don't need a 4th charger. Maybe you can sell 2-3 of them to others who may now want one. But I'd rather have the ability to charge and play something out of the box, rather than have to pay to get a charger separately. This is ridiculous and a horrendous decision from a business standpoint and you folks are eating it up so a billion dollar corporation doesn't want to spend what is pennies for them. It doesn't cost them $20 to add adapters to handheld consoles.
For godsakes its 10 dollars some of you people are ridiculous.
Here's what it is: Nintendo sells tens of millions of their handhelds. By not including the AC adapter, they can now sell tens of millions of AC adapters (which are $10 at full price, which is what most people will pay). Even if Nintendo only makes $1 for each adapter, that's a large chunk of change.
Wow, this is pretty dumb. So if you want to use 2 charging cradles, you have to constantly switch the adapter between them. The old cradle doesn't work with the new 3DS, right?
Next console is not going to have controllers included.Up next: Nintendo no longer including power adapters for Wii U to save you money.
PS2 and PS3 used same power cable. So what? From DSi till New 3DS, everything works.
If it's only 10 dollars, then Nintendo should be able to afford it with taking in the cost like every other tech company. Is your parents picking this up for you? Cause complaining like you'd be surprised when you find out you don't have a charger after buying it from the store going home to opening it? You buy a charger while your at the store, or while your shopping online. The target audience is obviously for upgraders.
People who know about the New 3DS and want it will do there research(it takes 10 secs to find out it doent come with a charger) I doubt this system is going to have alot of advertising behind it. The kids who do tell there parents to buy it will know it doesn't come with a charger and they'll tell them to make sure to include it to the purchase. This is an upgraded system there selling at the same price as a XL there's going to be cost cuts that you guys don't know and obviously don't understand.

It would be an acceptable response, if they had changed the charging port to micro USB. That's a charger most people got at home anyway. But keeping it proprietary and charging extra for the charger is nonsense.

they could have at least thrown in a USB based charge cable (some budget smartphones do this)... you can get a cheapo chinese made one for $2 on amazon

Good for you. It doesn't save me anything.
Again, if the service is so fantastic, Sony can sell the service based on the strength of the free titles alone, not on artificially gating multiplayer which is almost always cost free (peer to peer or 3rd party servers).
If it's such a great deal, they can even increase the cost of the subscription, and I'm sure people will continue to pay for it.
My iPhone 5s charger is seriously tiny. It would barely increase the box size if they went for something like that as opposed to the giant one they are using currently. Even a 1m USB cable would suffice.Honestly? I think it's because of the box size. I'm going to pull this from another poster

The rest of the world easily accepting this has now allowed Nintendo to do it everywhere. Thanks guys!Chindogg is on point guys...
Again, the rest of the world pretty much said "that's annoying but oh well" and paid the extra few dollars/euros/pound/yen/gil/zenny.
I honestly think they're simply invested in the slightly electrically different system for the DSi/3DS and it'd be expensive to back out now. Hopefully they'll change that for the successor.
Just hook up the power lines. You don't have to connect data lines to charge via USB. There's no hacking danger.Standardized microusb would be nice. Then again, I wonder if they're worried about security and hacking the hardware.
From DSi till New 3DS, everything works.
Yah so Nintendo shouldn't have a problem including it.
Bought a new phone, get a charger. Bought a new Ipad, get a charger. Bought a new power supply, it has the cord.
This definitely plays a huge role in this.Honestly? I think it's because of the box size. I'm going to pull this from another poster

A lot of iPhone users upgrade from previous iterations. Doubt it'd bother them at all, especially those renewing their contracts around now from their iPhone 5. Those who need a cable can always buy one. No point paying for something you don't want or need.
But this is a separate debate. In the case of the 3DS, we're talking about a proprietary cable. Not really comparable.

Sony was "forced" into this decision after MS showed that the market would bare it. Having free multiplayer did little for the PS3 in North America. Not charging for multiplayer would have been leaving hundreds of millions a year on the table. Including the games make the bitter pill slightly less gross to swallow for many people.
Nintendo's decision seems petty and penny pinching. It's not a good look precisely because the stakes are seemingly so low.

Shh, you are using logic.I hate this whole "others did similar things before, so it makes it okay" bullshit people are trying to push. Or "they're easy to buy elsewhere, quit being a baby" somehow being a decent argument to not including something that is necessary for the machine to function in the box.
My iPhone 5s charger is seriously tiny. It would barely increase the box size if they went for something like that as opposed to the giant one they are using currently. Even a 1m USB cable would suffice.
$4 is still more expensive than some stupid preorder bonus costume or character skin that causes people to rage and scream "anti-consumer!" when a company like Ubi Soft or Activision does it. This is simply a tacky, shitty practice. I don't care how much a charger is to buy separately. People that are giving Nintendo a pass on this seem to be doing it simply because they are Nintendo.
Can't see the problem here... That's a pretty reasonable explanation. The console would cost more if they included the adaptor as standard. Now you're saving money if you don't need the adaptor, or paying what it would have cost had they included the adaptor as standard if you buy the adaptor seperately.
The Lightning cable thing is particularly bad. I've bought third party cables (instead of paying apple THIRTY NINE DOLLARS) and an OS update has blocked them from working. That is ultimate shit-tier anti consumer stuff, IMO. But then my third party cable could start a fire and incinerate my family, or some other apologist bullshit. Nintendo's thing is atrociously cheap, nothing more. At least it's not somewhat hostileWell... I mean... It is, somewhat? The lightning cable is proprietary.
And c'mon. The average consumer that will be purchasing it for the first time.
Shh, you are using logic.
Next console will come with no controllers and uses Wiimotes to play.
The Wiimote will be $8 on Amazon, so it will be ok to not include it.
