Nintendo Switch 2.....4k Docked & 1080p 120FPS in handheld

Oh, damn, nice. But I do have reservations on whether those resolutions will be native in games. Will there be a bunch of 720p games upscaled to 1080p and even 4K?

So it's mini led after all?

HDR without enough dimming zones will suck.

Impressive stuff overall. 120hz screen will allow 40fps gaming. What about vrr?

OMG I can't believe some people are stupid enough to think we'd actually get 4K and 120 FPS from a Nintendo system

I knew it all along, it was obvious this is the way they'd go with Switch 2.

But is it native 4k or upscaled?
dude, it`s an anemic handheld. Unless we`re talking very simplistic graphics, menus or maybe some streamed stuff this hing will never produce native 4k.
Basically this thing has the port-technology to output 4k, just like the PS5 could theoretically output 8k.

There's many more 'HDR' panels out there that have no dimming zones whatsoever, than there are proper ones (or OLED ones).
So it's a valid question what this screen actually is.

That said 120hz is already beating expectations as is - no wonder they're planning to milk an OLED upgrade later for it.

40fps has nothing to do with 120hz refresh - that's only done on TVs because of TV standards and platform holders being hillariously risk-averse so they don't want to touch anything they don't control.
But on a handheld they control end-2-end. Nintendo could 'trivially' allow to have any refresh supported (39, 53, whatever - SteamDeck style) - it's not like those panels aren't capable of it. The question is more 'why won't they'.

Dude what? Steamdeck can run at 4k many older games. Why wouldn't a Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025 be able to do so? Its not like their games are very graphically demanding

I have no problem with upscaled 4K. I'll take it over nothing.

Older/simple games, sure. You won't be getting the next Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Zelda, or 3D Metroid at 4k native. They will use DLSS upscaling.

I fear that the huge installment base of Switch 1 will hold back Switch 2 for a long time, just like PS4 held back PS5.
Switch 2 will simply be a Switch 1 with resolution and framerate doubled.

mini LED would be nice, but the IGN tweet says it's LCD?

Mini leds are LCD, it's all about backlight technology. Without mini led backlight screen still can have dimming zones but at this size it won't look great...

Yeah, "HDR" like that will suck donkey balls. There are many monitors and tvs like that. No point in turning on HDR mode on them.

In theory 60fps screen can do 40hz as well but with 120hz panel you know that FOR SURE it will display 20/24/30/40/60/120 fps correctly without VRR support and 20/25/50/100 in 100hz mode (if it exists). Nintend is usually super basic when it comes to stuff like this so this surprised me. Good stuff.

Horray, 1080p games upscaled to 4K

Real nice just a shame they are going to be pay walling all older games with upgrade packs that prolly only offer the FPS unlock and rez upgrade.

The screen is 120hz

And the system outputs in 4K

and there's a thread littered with "lol Nintendo" and "of course it won't support 4K"

That's what I'm referring to
Oh, I misunderstood because the lack of punctuation. It read like it supports 4k 120. My bad.

It's not 4K 120, 4K output is limited to 60fps

Yeah, I'd bet Nintendo is still planning for mostly 30/60fps content in Switch 2. Using a 120hz display is nice to have options, but they will probably still run it at 60hz refresh a lot of the time to conserve battery.
