DETROIT (sPERTS.net) Even if hes not going onto the floor, Darko Milicic cant get off the bench.
After Friday nights Pistons-Pacers game was interrupted and eventually cancelled by a players-fans brawl in the stands, Larry Brown didn't allow Milicic to see action.
After Ron Artest and the Pacers rushed the stands, almost every Piston joined the fracas...
The second pick overall in the 2003 NBA Draft sat and watched as teammates defended fans against furious Indiana players.
I do what coach tells me to, Milicic told the media after the game. Thats all I have told you guys, and thats all I can tell you guys.
The brawl began with 45 seconds left in the game with the Pacers ahead 97-82. Indianas Ron Artest went to the sidelines after receiving a hard shove to the face from Detroit forward Ben Wallace. A fan threw a drink on Artest while he lay on the scorers table, and the erratic star jumped into the stands. A melee ensued as his teammates followed.
All the Pistons joined the brawl to try to restore some peace except Milicic, who was ordered by Larry Brown to stay seated.
I couldnt believe what happened, and I got up to help, he said. Thats when coach put his hand on my shoulder and said, Not today, Darko.
Brown has faced a lot of criticism in regards to his handling of Milicic. After the Pistons used their first pick in last years draft on the Serbian phenom, he only played 159 minutes in his rookie year. This year has not been any different, as the seven-footer has only played in one game.
...but Darko Milicic was forced to remain in his seat.
Hes coming along, but I dont think he has what it takes to rumble in the stands at this point, Brown said. Europeans are a lot more fundamentally sound, but they lack that necessary aggression.
Brown said that Milicic is effective from long range, but the Palace of Auburn Hills does not allow Molotov cocktails.
Maybe in Serbia, but not here, Brown reiterated.
Brown has reserved Milicic for games in which the Pistons are soundly ahead, and maintains that practicing with Rasheed Wallace every day will sharpen his skills. However, Brown says that the 19-year-old got garbage time on Friday literally.
He got some mop-up work in, Brown said. Do you have any idea how many drinks were thrown?
The NBA will likely take a few days to review matters before coming to a decision on punishment. While nobody directly involved reported injuries, Indiana coach Rick Carlisle was hospitalized after Pistons fans overturned him and set him on fire
