Isn't the Vatican surrounded by a wall?

Good point. Now that I think about, the Vatican is made up of a bunch of walls.

Checkmate Pope Francis.

It made me laugh more than it should lol

The problem isn't Trump's base, it's everyone else. And every one of these tirades pushes away more people. If white racists were enough to win the presidency, we'd have Romney in the White House right now.

This isn't about winning the WH. This is about winning the nomination where many conservatives view the Pope as a leftist. Besides, most Protestants and non religious people don't care what the Pope says.

Could this have hurt him close to a general election? Probably yes. Before a vote in South Carolina, and many upcoming southern states on Super Tuesday? Definitely not, may help him.

I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current President. No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith.

But didn't he just attack Obama lack of faith in the very first sentence and then contradict himself in the second?

Trump is a liar and fraud. Everyone knows this (you'd have to be a total imbecile not to), people simply choose to along with it anyway because it's viewpoints that they agree with.

People should be able to identify as Christian if they want, but it usually becomes pretty obvious whether or not they're actually a good Christian or not. I would say that Trump is a terrible Christian. Most in the Republican party are bad Christians. To be a good Christian, you should demonstrate Christlike behavior, and I can't see anybody doing that right now.

So sure, Trump is a Christian, he's just a bad Christian.

Yeah and his isn't Republican either, but that's why I can tolerate him. I can't tolerate his stance on immigration though and his views on climate change.

Er, is this a sign of how Trump would handle foreign policy? Childish name calling and conspiracy theories? How fanatical of a supporter do you have to be to not realize this kind of response will only hurt you if this man runs your government?

It's oddly close to how Chavez and now Maduro handled FP. Weird.

Wow. The Pope made Jeb Bush defend Trump. "It's not un Christian to protect your border and keep people out who come illegally. Trump faith is between him and his creator" Rubio also joining in. "Vatican City controls who comes in and when, so should the United States"

The fact that the Twitter user is called both "CelticAngelo" and "Deus Vult" should tell you about her intelligence level and what reasons she's supporting Trump.

At the same time, funny for a person using the name Deus Vult to be critical of the pope.

Has something changed in Rome since the last time I was there?

No it doesn't. Vatican City is in the Italian customs area, which is itself inside the European Shengen area. How long does it take to check something like that?

He wasn't defending trump. He was defending himself and any future policies he may have that are similar.

Every little bit helps. If this nudges the Catholic vote a point or two in a few key states, that's nice.

Catholics-Percentage-by-State.jpg
I imagine a significant amount of American Catholics unless they are Hispanic give very few shits about what the pope has to say. Muh liberty and all that.

Unfortunately this (and the Vatican being a walled city) will become facts to a lot of folks just like Beyoncé's Formation song containing anti-police lyrics. It's what happens when you're not capable of accepting information from sources other than Fox News/AM Radio/FB feeds.

The Pope is right. Trump is pandering to the denser minds of the evangelical vote.

My direct peers see through it, but it's troubling to see how many acquaintances on social media believe his farce of a faith.

He holds no real convictions toward the causes that many evangelicals care about the most.

This pope is a mess. He's a big fat mess. He's easily the weakest pope. When I'm president, we're going to make the papacy great again.

Also for the record, is there a precedent for this? As in, a Pope weighing in on the primaries?

Whether or not you agree or disagree with the Pope it seems like a strange thing for him to get involved in.

What does this even mean?!! LOL

The Great Mr. Trump™ means to say that the Evil ISIS Muslim Forces, if he were not president, will sweep through Europe and burn down the Vatican(Yes, they have armies of millions capable of doing so. Be Afraid). What The Great Mr. Trump™ would do about this should he be President is start a Crusade, named the Trump Crusade™(Which the damn dirty Mexican's will pay for), and unite the Christian world against that dreaded Super power of the ISIS forces and We Will be Winning Again™.

I'd say that's a compliment toward Trump, if anything.

DONALD J. TRUMP RESPONSE TO THE POPE

If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’s ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President because this would not have happened. ISIS would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians.

The Mexican government and its leadership has made many disparaging remarks about me to the Pope, because they want to continue to rip off the United States, both on trade and at the border, and they understand I am totally wise to them. The Pope only heard one side of the story - he didn’t see the crime, the drug trafficking and the negative economic impact the current policies have on the United States. He doesn’t see how Mexican leadership is outsmarting President Obama and our leadership in every aspect of negotiation.

For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian and as President I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current President. No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith. They are using the Pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant.https://www.donaldjtrump.com/press-releases/donald-j.-trump-response-to-the-pope

And despite all this I love how people continue to say Trump doesn't have anything against Mexico, he just wants to stop illegal immigration.

No, he shits on Mexico every possible time he can with thinly veiled bigotry and xenophobia. It stopped being about immigration a long time ago.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
The Pope can't hurt his base. If anything he could gain some evangelical support from other candidates since they don't like the Pope and probably think he should shut up. This probably helps him in southern states. Those Republicans who don't want a wall and favor immigration reform are likely voting Jeb, or Kasich anyway and aren't going to vote for Trump.

While generally protestants don't like "the" pope, i'm seeing a lot of likes for "this" pope.

He actually said it like that. Why does he keep talking about himself in the 3rd person? Should that not set off alarm bells for everyone who hears him?

Much more at the link, including the Pope allowing contraception in areas affected by the Zika virus.

It's nice to hear Pope Francis speak about against Donald Trump, but this probably won't affect his election chances.

No True Scotsman fallacy. "Christian" is not a synonym for "good person". It's an arrogant, facile assumption that bad acts make someone un-Christian. If they proclaim to believe in and follow Jesus, that's it - they're Christian. Debate the level of honest adherence all you want, that's fair. But you don't get to say only good people can be Christian.

Hell, the pope's own bigoted homophobia doesn't mean he's not a Christian, for example.

You still need a vatican permission to enter the "main" vatican zone.
There's literally nothing in there except for administrative offices, though. All the churches and museums are open to the public.
