DOLPHIN KICK?!? NBC AM CRYING!

Shit, it's always a tough call between NBC's homerist focus (you can usually tell when the American athlete isn't going to win gold because they'll deign to mention another countries athlete by name) and the CBC's annoying as fuck Brian Williams. CBC's coverage has it's faults (waaaaay too much whining and apologizing/sermonizing by Williams, god I hate him) but at least the coverage of the events isn't bad.

Be thankful you have a choice. Here all I have is NBC, which refuses to recognize that there is an "Internet" where I can get scores instantly (and usually unavoidably as it is often on the front page of any major news site). Furthermore, they only show events where Americans medal and then usually do a horrible job of coverage (such as the 200m freestyle, where they kept on talking about Phelps and Thorpe, neglecting to mention Van Haanderwhatever who was the reigning olympic champion AND put up a much better fight than Phelps). Plus we have annoying-as-fuck Bob Costas doing EVERYtHING.

God I hate NBC.

Amanda Beard - hot or not?

I honestly change my mind every time I see her. The overbite almost works sometimes, and then suddenly it's all bad.

Every host country has some events that aren't very popular but the attendence is just awful. A shame, but Greece was the smallest host nation in a while, and the way the whole thing was just barely finished in time seems to have convinced ppl to not bother making plans to go maybe. And the whole PR disaster with the sprinters skipping the drug test and then so conveniently crashing really soured a lot of Greeks I think.

Jesus, are the Olympics really being held in Beijing in 2008 despite those sort of conscription tactics? It doesn't sound like parents or children have much of a choice at all if selected, which is horrible if true.

...

China is far from the only country that does that. Do you live in a bubble? And it's not all bad, because if they succeed, they're open to so much more opportunities and money than the average Chinese is.

I don't follow worldwide athletic recruiting trends, sorry. But is this actually that widespread? And to the degree that happens in China? I don't imagine much of a real choice existing in this case. If the family and kid decide that it is a great opportunity worth the sacrifice, then fine. But if no real choice exists and kids are basically forced to join up, then yikes. Opportunity is nice, but it's not guaranteed and there should always be a choice. I do hope I'm wrong.

Does anyone know if any channel will be showing the soccer match between Iraq and Morocco tomorrow?

Telemundo will be airing it taped between 1 PM and 8 PM.

I'm commenting on a serious issue raised by articles presented in this thread and your last "expert" reply added nothing to the discussion. I'm not looking to impose my opinion on anyone else (note my open questions), just voice it and maybe learn more about the issue. If you can't respond constructively to my very reasonable reply, then please don't at all.

Telemundo. Never heard of it, is it only in Europe? I'm in Canada so I'm looking for any kind of way to get the game. If there is a way for me to view Telemundo from Canada please tell me.

Telemundo is a spanish station in the US owned by NBC.

There's nothing to add to the discussion, because it's an accepted and long-familiar institution that has been practiced in dozens of nations for decades. Just because you just discovered it doesn't mean it's new to anyone else. There's nothing particularly cruel about the practice, because with nations that has such limited opportunities, such offers are a blessing.

Ah I see. I noticed they have this video feed thing on their website. Does that replay their shows? Will the have the game there?

If the games are to be held in the Chinese capital in 4 years, then I think there's certainly room for new discussion about the rules governing the recruiting system there and how the location choice reflects on the Olympics themselves amid these claims, especially if there is any potential at all for shady tactics. And if it's news to ANYBODY else, then there's room for an exchange of opinions/facts about it from those who have known and researched, which is preferable to boasting or brushing aside the concerns of others. I respect your opinion about the opportunity, but I have yet to see anything to solidly disprove my concern that there's no real choice involved, just pleasant reassurances and condescending talk.

Yeah, there's a choice. You could be a piss poor peasant-peon that makes less than a dollar a day and live a life that might as well not have been lived or be given a shot at the history books and a financial iron rice bowl.

P.S. China doesn't have a capitol.

I live in Toronto but I'll see what I can do.

Beijing's not the capital? Dictionary.com told me it was for whatever reason. Anyway, when I say choice, I mean more along the lines of the family itself having any say when the government selects a child, as I've said repeatedly. For many, I'm sure it IS a great opportunity, but it should not be the sole decision of an overbearing government official (if this is the case). Can you speak to this?

Fart: What's your beef here? I'm not flipping out on Stele or blindly telling him he's wrong. I've been giving him the benefit of the doubt and allowing him to explain his position. That's called respecting someone's opinion, and it doesn't require you to give up your own doubts about an issue.

Could you elaborate on where you're coming from with Beijing BTW? Encarta's also saying it's the capital. I've been saying "capitol" accidentally, but I'm sure you wouldn't be referring to something as ridiculous as that.

I know this is a few hours late, but (regarding women's gymnastics yesterday) I think Mohini Bhardwaj did way better than she was given credit for, and Carly Patterson was over-rated as hell. Oh, and Svetlana was fukin' robbed, man.

Is there a website that shows that sport is coming on what channel and at what time?

(I had no idea that the Olympics were also on Bravo and USA)

The Olympics are airing across the 6 NBC owned networks. Go to NBCOlympics.com and click TV listings for the schedule.

Paul Hamm takes the gold by .012!

the shot put stuff was cool. It really felt ol school with the dirt and the people on the grass. Wish they ran the other Track and Field stuff there.

Count of Concision
I'm not sure if it was a replay of earlier events I just watched, but they just showed the men's all around competition here on the east coast, and WOW-- what an intense competition!
It seemed as if Hamm (sp?) was out of it after his fall on the vault, but the other athletes just kept leaving the door open with mistakes of their own-- some huge, some small ones that eventually added up. Hamm's routine on the high bar at the end was phenomenal; I knew he'd medal with that, but I didn't think they'd give him a 9.832. They said that it was the closest race for gold ever, as it was decided by .012 of a point.
Crazy stuff.

Sorry if this is a spoiler-- just let me know if it is and I'll tag it.

EDIT: In the other thread, they mentioned that it hasn't aired on the west coast yet, so I tagged it.

Phelps' incredibly long torso disturbs me. It's just not at all normal body proportions.

Ouch. Listened to it on the radio, poor Serbia n Montenegro... Go Anzac spirit :) Now for the Boomers!! Bogut will need to duplicate his first half vs Angola throughout the hole game, Heal will need to hit 20 or so points, Neilsen needs to start a fight, and maybe be will loose by under 15 points. Woot. Anyway, Luthiania and Puerto Rico are more realistic. Damn tough group we got :(

AUS 31 - USA 21 @ Qtr time.

THe aussie commentators were setting us up for a flogging, but we've opened the can of whoop ass.

not expecting it to continue, but the USA team can't shoot from more than 2 feet.

The US Team looks very dangerous on the break, we need to keep them in their half court set. Iverson is hitting some shots, but I think they need to hit ALOT more shots from outside the key before Gorj goes to man. If we keep shooting well, and they continue to look disinterested on defense.. who knows?

Defense is ATTROCIOUS.... Especially Marbury's defense. Why in the world is Shane Heal looking like a star out there?

Offense is better. Guys are much more patient and being smart enough to GIVE the ball to Duncan... Iverson's knocking down some good shots. A lot more interior scoring.

But why can't we have a game with both GOOD defense and offense?

Anyhow, refs are full of it. Calling all sorts of ticky tacks and letting an obvious charge from an aussie player against australian go uncalled, yet they call the foul against Duncan and give them two freethrows. wtf?

Refs or no refs, a team full of NBA stars should NOT be hanging around with this Aussie team. WTF was that last play? Melo just froze lol
