I just think some people get super complacent by seeing a poll and thinking "oh Macron has it in the bag, guess I shouldn't vote" and that's when shit goes south.

But like, do you have any basis for thinking this?

Do you have any proof of it being a bigger effect compared to Le Pen-voters staying home because she's trailing by 20 percent and "already lost"?

And Sam Wang gave Clinton a 100% chance of winning.

Polls unquestionably have their place but people should not let their guard down because of them.

There is a big difference between Clinton's 2-3% lead (which was actually accurate) and Macron's 20% one. Le Pen could overperform several times more than Trump did and still lose.

But yeah people should vote.

Yes, but both Brexit and Trump/Clinton polls weren't that off. What was off, was the certainty with which many data-crunchers predicted a Remain or Clinton win with so many undecideds and a close race.

The Macron - Le Pen race isn't even close.

Of course, Macron will be hit with a barrage of fake news and attacks from Le Pen, Trump and Russia allies, so who knows what polls will look like in two weeks.

But for now, the EU is safe.

I don't think polls are trash at all and if you actually read my post you'd see I said that

We're talking about a 30pts gap there. Le Pen didn't beat Macron tonight but somehow she will doing it in 2 weeks after all the other candidates called to vote for Macron ?

Lets say its not safe that he will win but the possibility is higher.

You're lucky. I'll have to live under president Macron.
I was pretty invested in politics these past two years but I think I'm gonna shut everything off from now on. I'm disgusted.
Lucky?

He gets to live under Shizo Abe. This post shows an utter lack of perspective, it comes across as really whiny.

I get it, and I more or less agree. Macron is very likely to win.

But my point is that people should still be taking this seriously and voting anyway. The stakes are way too high to get complacent.

Exactly, this is more like the Dutch elections, where there was always no chance that Wilders would be able to close the gap in the polls and form government in his own right. Trump and Brexit were always possible, no matter how much people hoped otherwise.

Yes. There is no reason not to vote for him if you want to prevent Le Pen. It's that easy.

If you guys wanted to see how Trump won, tune into CNN right now. It's literally Le Pen variety hour. Who is she? Why is so popular? What if the polls are wrong? Live feed of an empty podium waiting for her to speak.

This is the media some of you still think as guardians of democracy.

All of my French friends are adamant they will abstain now, all of them are socialist and communist and refuse to vote for Macron, and of course Le Pen.

"Une vraie partouze électorale" - says Mr FN, describing the other parties banding together against them.

Roughly translated: "an electoral sex orgy"

This is why I don't watch CNN anymore. They employ Trump supporters to come on nightly to defend his shit. Its like CNN wants this. Drama sells, more ratings. Its like CBS said that one time, Trump is bad for the country, but good for us. Just disgusting.

Macron now ahead on official count for anyone who's panicking about the possibility of exit polls being wrong :p

I don't know where they find them but the militants/representatives from "Les Insoumis" interviewed on TV are fucking disgusting.

They "won't vote in two weeks"? Disgraceful.

That lady on France2 who still thinks Mélenchon can win manages to be less dignified than Fillon. *Slow clap*

That's five consecutive times that Bayrou sides with the winner ^_^ (well, I'm slightly in advance now).

I would agree with that. Which is why instead of Frexit, he promise a renegotiation of the treaties.
Well, "If the sun is not coming out of west tomorrow morning, we go out of EU" is basically calling Frexit.

His stance is too strong to allow for some leeway, there's no chance he's successful enough with renegociations in a short time.

They're still counting ballots right? When can we expect the final result?

Sorry if it's been answered a million times already
Expect definitive estimations late tonight.

Definitive, official results, I think it'll be wednesday (need to check everything twice and answer to objections)

I mean I'm not gonna argue that CNN is a gold standard of journalism but also people who are watching CNN in the US aren't voting in the French election so this is kind of a moot point. And Le Pen draws heavy parallels to Trump so it's understandable why she's getting more press here than Macron is.

Hey if she wins the country will be headed to ruin but at least their conscience will be clear! How brave.

JLM's online trolls are pretty fucking disgraceful as well.

Just came back from the counting session. For a right-wing city, Macron is surprisingly far in front of Fillon (on the few hundreds ballots we counted of course). Mélenchon also surprising high, and we even had one vote for Poutou. :D
Just had a quick look at the first results, but it seems that the polls were dead on.

I can understand why one would abstain, but that's really sad to read. One of the core values of the French left is to never, ever leave a chance to the far-right.

EXIT POLL: POPULIST LE PEN ADVANCES IN FRENCH ELECTION

That's the chyron that has been up the entire time of their coverage. Not even a mention of Macron, the guy who is actually in first.

It's not surprising. A lot of people refuse to vote when they don't like either candidate. Doesn't help when politics becomes polarised as it is now. There'll be plenty of social conservatives who supported Fillon because he was the only social conservative will now refuse to vote for either candidate.

Hope the French people understand the rise of the far right needs to be stopped.
And the best way to stop it is to stop voting for neoliberalism. I'll obviously go for Macron, but with the after taste it means that the far-right will be even stronger in five years.
