There is a big difference between Clinton's 2-3% lead (which was actually accurate) and Macron's 20% one. Le Pen could overperform several times more than Trump did and still lose.
But yeah people should vote.
Macron got more votes than her. In the second round it'd just him and her. And the French system isn't the broken electoral college trash.

Yes, but both Brexit and Trump/Clinton polls weren't that off. What was off, was the certainty with which many data-crunchers predicted a Remain or Clinton win with so many undecideds and a close race.
The Macron - Le Pen race isn't even close.
Of course, Macron will be hit with a barrage of fake news and attacks from Le Pen, Trump and Russia allies, so who knows what polls will look like in two weeks.
But for now, the EU is safe.

Exactly, this is more like the Dutch elections, where there was always no chance that Wilders would be able to close the gap in the polls and form government in his own right. Trump and Brexit were always possible, no matter how much people hoped otherwise.

I can't see Dupont-Aignan endorsing Le Pen, at all. He might not give any recommendation, but if he gives one, it'll be for Macron. And I think the same goes for Melenchon.

I'd guess rural areas are faster to count, where the FN is expected to get its best results, so these result don't seem too strange.

All of my French friends are adamant they will abstain now, all of them are socialist and communist and refuse to vote for Macron, and of course Le Pen.
Nothing for the final two candidates, it's over.
As for the others we can see them going up or down, but nothing too drastic.

And Le Pen draws heavy parallels to Trump so it's understandable why she's getting more press here than Macron is.

Just came back from the counting session. For a right-wing city, Macron is surprisingly far in front of Fillon (on the few hundreds ballots we counted of course). Mélenchon also surprising high, and we even had one vote for Poutou.

I can understand why one would abstain, but that's really sad to read. One of the core values of the French left is to never, ever leave a chance to the far-right.
Its only 20% of the vote and mostly rural areas that support Le Pen. No need to panic yet.

It's not surprising. A lot of people refuse to vote when they don't like either candidate. Doesn't help when politics becomes polarised as it is now. There'll be plenty of social conservatives who supported Fillon because he was the only social conservative will now refuse to vote for either candidate.

And the best way to stop it is to stop voting for neoliberalism. I'll obviously go for Macron, but with the after taste it means that the far-right will be even stronger in five years.
