Persona 5 Review Thread

Spirited

Mine is pretty and pink
Zelda also looks like an early ps3 game, so yes, there is an excuse.

Regardless, i'm glad persona 5 is getting great reviews, looking forward to playing it.

You must have bad memory if you think Zelda looks like an early ps3 game, sorry.

I don't want to derail just don't like dumb hyperbole.

As expected, great scores all around. I had a blast with the Japanese version, although I'm a slow Japanese reader. The first 20 hours were turtle paced due to that. I think I will enjoy more the English subtitles.

Did a review seriously knock the game not being portable as a valid criticism? Wtf

I think that complaint is poorly written, because the actual critique is more that she wishes the social aspect and structure of the game better suited long play sessions, rather than more pick up and play pacing.

Best PS4 game so far. And we're talking about 2017, the best year in modern gaming.

Well seeing as how the latter is full of game criticism and the former states their only complaint about the game is that the can't play it on different HW for which they apparently lowered the score of the game for yea I'd say you're probably right. One is an actual critique and the other is somebody using their SW review to complain about not being able to play the game on their preferred platform.

I think it's absolutely fair to say a game might be better suited for a portable experience. Especially in Persona's case, you have a lot of people who loved Persona 4 Golden especially because its social sim aspects are well-suited to be played in short burst or while watching TV etc. If you think that not being able to do that is detrimental to the game experience, then why shouldn't you be allowed to criticize just that?

Yeah, sure, in the day and age of Metacritic it might be frustrating to have a more subjective opinion "taint" the metascore, but, well, fuck Metacritic. Reviews aren't supposed to follow a standard formula set by a dumb website.

Holy shit, great scores

This year we are insanely spoilt for good games, I have a backlog of games I need to buy, let alone play.

Can't wait for this.

Yep. sure it would not surprise you to learn that this same review is an avid Nintendo fan who made a name for themselves spreading Switch rumors. Funny coincidence isn't it?

She also made her name by creating a gaming butts video series. Most asses in the P5 cutscenes are flatter than I would like. Coincidence? I don't think so!

People really have the wrong idea if they think the review process is starting at 10 and then going, "oh it's not on a handheld, it's only a 9".

I appreciate greatly that Gravity Rush 2 is on PS4 since the expanded scope is marvelous for the game, but you can tell the series is sticking to its handheld routes from a game design and flow perspective - it's mission-based which tends to work better in chunks rather than long, intense sessions.

Considering a lot of people played Persona 3 and 4 on handhelds, including this reviewer, and thus have that as a point of reference, it's completely reasonable for people to have their own conclusions regarding how each format works best with the series's pacing. It's missing the forest for the trees to say it's simply "I wish this game was on different hardware" when the criticism is specifically regarding the game's pacing and flow, and how it gels with the expected playstyle it demands.

Trying to drag them because of alleged Nintendo bias though is just weak all-around. especially when this reviewer specifically mentions having played Persona 4 on Vita. Why does it matter?

Sorry, that's not valid criticism or critique at all. You can literally say that about ANY game or series. "It sure would be swell if I could play this on the go and pause/pick up whenever I felt like it." It's just dumb.

What a time to be alive.

THIS!
Omg, this is one of the best years in gaming I've ever experienced. I'm overwhelmed in backlog and I love it. And The Xbox doesn't have an answer for any of it. I know a couple of stubborn Xbox only gamers what refers to the PS4 lineup as "weeaboo shit". I honestly point and laugh at them. I like the system as well but it's getting pretty close to being packed away for a bit.

Frankly, this is really disappointing coming from Jimquisition.

Agreed but it's worth mentioning Jim didn't write the review. Someone else did and said person is known for their leaks/rumors regarding a brand new competing portable platform.

Never, apparently.

I would personally welcome people saying, "Look at all the great JRPG games we've been getting: Persona 5, FFXV, Nier, Zelda" instead of "Reasons why this Japanese game is better than this other Japanese game."
Again as a fan of FF XV the only reasons for making such comparisons is to identify flaws and provide feedback for improvement of the future titles, this is indeed a great period for fans of Jap games, however we shouldn't neglect to give feedback and analyze the trends that emerge.

People should be free to provide criticism of whatever games they want, citing other games as examples if needed, in a constructive and civil manner. Circle jerk threads of never-ending positivity are just as bad as negative cynical echo chambers.

What a crazy year for games so far.

I can't wait to get into Persona 5. I didn't think it would be this high tbh, these kind of games seem to be for a more particular audience. But the more the better. :D

Hope 2018 don't be a wasteland.

Agreed. "It would be better on a portable device" is a terrible criticism.

Good thing I didn't.

It wasn't held back due to cherry picking, it was to avoid the unsavory reaction that has closed previous Review Threads.

All the more reason not to hide it, if Gaf can't handle review threads better with scores like that around we shouldn't have them.

To be fair (and accurate), it is Laura's only MAJOR complaint. She does have a few other minor complaints throughout the review, if you read it.

It honestly feels like you just focused on the last three paragraphs of the review.

The Digital Trends reviewer, according to his profile on that site, suggests he is a Destiny player lol. No wonder.

Bruh, keep it clean, we're starting to tip into that shitty review hype cycle, and the reaction to the Digital Trends score was treated with maturity up until this point to. :(

Psst I'm a Destiny player to, come at me Bro???

I don't understand the issue with the review. It's tone is mostly very positive. It is punctuated with an excellent score if you are blessed with the ability to understand that 8.5 on a 10 point scale is actually really high. The reviewer played over 100 hours of the game and had a lot of fun. What am I missing?

She also was the voice of a bunch of PS4 Pro rumours too. And was vindicated for pretty mucb all of it, I believe?

Edit: or slim? Either way, both Sony and Ninty stuff

I played and enjoyed Desinty

I am currently playing and loving Persona 5

Yeah.

The trend of breaking out the pitchforks and scouring a reviewer for potential blackmail over an incredibly subjective is a disturbing path to go down.

All for percentages of a percentage point on a review aggregate.

I mean she even says the following

"Honestly, I only have one major gripe with Persona 5, and it’s a gripe that I’m not sure is unfair or not."

"Still, the fact that’s my biggest complaint in 120 hours of JRPG says a lot."

Like, she clearly really liked it anyway and she admits it her self that it's probably unfair. :p

People are free to compare games of the same genre, especially if they're released in the same timeframe (if those comparisons make sense is another thing entirely). I know you worked on FFXV and it may come off as irritating to you but there's nothing you can change about this.
