Persona 5 Review Thread

Sucks to read about the homophobia talked about in Polygon's review. Most likely, this makes it a pass for me at launch until it's on sale or something.

Exactly why I say he wasn't handled perfectly. I hate that they didn't actually commit to what his sexuality was and how they played it up for humour. Go hard or go home, man.

Of course remembering the earlier comments about how they handle the subject this time, maybe it's dodging a bullet by not having any queer characters in the party.

Hint: If your first thought was Snake Eater is the third game, then it's proving the point :p

The third game was metal gear solid and it is when the series properly began.

What's what all the subs are for?

We understand what the characters are saying by reading the subs but we don't understand the words that comes out of their mouths and that's the key diffirence.

Personally, i always prefer english voice acting because i appreciate and connect myself MUCH more to the characters when they speak a language that i understand.

All characters gain experience whether or not they are in your party.
YES!
Hah, I tried playing the first Metal Gear but. Ah, couldn't do it. Anyway, I LIKE THE FIRST DEVIL MAY CRY GAME

It's basically your standard NES game except you try to avoid being seen generally except for boss fights (from what I can remember. It's been a few years.). The interesting part's kinda at the end where Big Boss purposely starts giving you bad decisions over the radio like going into a room with an expanding pithole. That's pretty much the only real story. The second one you have stuff like a snake eating your inventory, looking up morse code in your guide, and more stuff that indicates the charm that would make up more of the later series.

Dodn't your teammates get grossed out at that in Persona Q?

P2 came out in the 90s back when people played games and didn't have to lean on the otaku market. The days of Persona being a subversive series are long gone.

Yosuke gets antsy about it, Minato doesn't care and Kanji embraces it at the end but I can't remember how the rest reacted.

It's not ideal but at least it's something. I mean they could have done away with the male options all together for that segment.

Yeah.

The first act of this game STRONGLY disagrees with you.
Even if they're not in your party?
Yes, everybody gets exp to avoid you needing to rotate your party if you want even levels. I never had an issue.

A real shame about how the homophobia and queerness is used as a punchline, hopefully it isn't brushed under the rug and amongst all this high praise the writers get some shit for it. Because it sounds like they did an amazing job with everything else

Between this and Mass Effect, 2017 has been piss poor for good LGBTQ representation.

On the one hand, I'm kinda happy to hear this, as I was the sort to grind out EVERYONE so that everyone was at about the same level (besides myself).

On the other hand, I kinda liked doing that.

Yeah.

Oh? That sounds promising.

I keep waiting for the game store to call me and tell me that my P5 copy has arrived early.

Edit: I just want to add that saying it's a game primarily targeted at the otaku/waifu crowd doesn't hold much weight when the other 'waifu' game, Fire Emblem Fates had characters like Niles and Forrest.

Do I need knowledge of the franchise to play this?

Reading that it's the new gold standard for JRPG's is getting me hot and bothered!

Yeah, from what I've heard about P5, even if the LGBTQ representation is trash, the majority of the game is very political and progressive by Japanese standards.
Look I'm gay. I'm the last guy to forgive homophobia and being the butt of a joke. It's not cool and Atlus should absolutely know better.

But the majority of the game is a harrowing, almost bitingly critical and much needed take on how awful many aspects of Japanese and high school culture have become.

It pulls no punches in terms of how Japanese society is bleeding to death. It's the most political thing I've seen out of Japan in a long time. And i pray it makes even one more person politically active because dear God does the country need it.

No. Same universe but separate storylines, a bit like Final Fantasy. No need to know what happened in the previous games, it's all standalone.

The only issue you will have is that the Persona games have a learning curve to get over. I assume P5 is the same in that things like buff/debuff spells which are redundant in 99% of jrpgs are a must.

I disagree with that. Death of the author might be a thing, but the game makes it absolutely clear that Naoto does not want to be a man. She simply wants to be accepted in a male dominated society. Naoto dressed and acted like a boy because that was the only way she felt she could gain respect.

P4's messaging is all over the place. Be true to yourself, but go back to doing the same exact thing you did before, Learn to respect each other for who they are, but hey, MC's best friend remains a homophobic trash can, even after seeing his friend deal with issues of toxic masculinity, Chie and Yukiko basically just became even more aggressively overzealous about everything and gained an annoying laugh respectively as their main (non S.link) development.

I can't see P5 not being an improvement honestly. Even before playing it, I'm more fond of the characters and they seem more grounded.

That's not really clear cut.

His dungeon is a...bathhouse for a reason.

And the dungeon isn't really there for humor.

While I personally think Kanji is gay, 1) all the dungeons are more metaphorical than literal (Rise doesn't literally want to be a stripper, for instance) and 2) they use Kanji's dungeon for humor constantly.

Nothing. Sure, you slacked on finishing Horizon and Breath of the Wild in time for this, but shelving both of them to play the true GOTY 2016? No one is gonna be mad at you for that!

I'm playing Horizon now, I got Nier, Mass Effect and P5 on my plate. I JUST go through playing Zelda for over 185 hours. I'm fucking doomed.

P5 handles your issues much, much better.

It is very clear cut by the end which was always a shame. It is like they put those themes in to balance out Youske's bullshit but then got cold feet which kept going into P5.

I'll just say this last thing

The first act of this game stayed with me for days after finishing it. It's a masterpiece that's arguably the best piece of storytelling and narrative that any Japanese developer has ever done.

I stand by that. It's worth picking this up for it alone.

Post gave me chills, man. I don't know if I can wait any longer haha.

On the topic of ATLUS always dropping the ball on even the minor LGBT stuff, it really sucks and I can never give it a pass, but I feel the positives heavily outweigh the negatives when it comes to this series. I feel I can still heavily enjoy something, while acknowledging that it is problematic with certain issues.

So the homophobia is ok with you, just not $60 ok?

Have you played the game? Question: how long into the game do I have to play until
goro
joins the party?

Weren't there also unused voice clips that hinted at the possibility of Yosuke being a romance option?

Sounds like Persona I love. And I say this as someone who started to play Megaten (and Atlus) games thanks to P3 and P4, but such games are really a tamed experience in narrative regarding what Persona 2 acomplished.

That's good to hear. I'm really excited for t and the reviews are really promising. A through and through animu JRPG with over a 90 MC score? Insane.
I'm honestly kinda stunned it's reviewing this well but, I just think on my experience and am glad others are having the same level of enjoyment from it.

It truly is an incredible experience.

Sad to hear about the LGBT stuff, always hoped there would be LGBT romance options never felt there would be. It'd be nice in the future.

Can anyone tell me if the LGBT treatment is more agregious than in P4? As I'm not someone who found It bothersome in that but as I've become more socially progressive since I can image much more would bother me

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but the first arc is definitely a gut punch and really drives home the game's idea of catharsis. It's super solid.

Fuck man your comments are really making me want to jump on this game ASAP. As good as a lot of games have been lately in a general / mechanical sense, it feels like it's been a long time since a narrative had any kind of bite to it, or any kind of subversive subtext.

I'm hoping the game is more severe/darker in tone, similar to P3.

Thanks for the heads-up, I'll avoid their review for now.

It's more real than P3. P3 is dark in atmosphere while P5 makes it tangible and is heavy with what it handles. The tone isn't doom and gloom but the stuff that happens and can be pretty rough.
