Persona 5 Review Thread

It's the true voice. If you truly believe games are art, you'd treat them like every other medium, where it's preferable to watch the movie or work in its original language the way the director intended.

You may LIKE the dub of whatever it is, but it's not the original. For example, this has nothing to do with Japanese voices specifically, to be perfectly honest - if it was a German movie that was dubbed with American voices I know I'd want to hear it in German, not in English.

The dubbed movies argument is a poor comparison, dubbing over real people always looks/sounds horrible regardless of the quality of the acting

Yeah, that's the one thing that sucks. Kanji may not have been handled perfectly but I thought for sure him and FeMC would be paving the way for Atlus having further queer characters and female protags. Ah well.
Kanji's not gay, and in P4, it's pretty much just used as comic relief. His issue is bein insecure about his masculinity and what it means to be a man. Sorta a mirror of Naoto's issues.

This is a game series that lets you date every female character in the game. Not even Witcher 3 lets you do that. That should tell you what kind of demographic this game is aiming for.

Tbf, you could kinda go after Jun in P2. And in PQ you could chose to "marry" your male teammates.

Hoping to see some m/m options in their future games tho.

The artistic vision stuff is real dumb. People don't write scripts having only one specific actor that can be capable of playing the character. The voice actors give life to the characters, but pretending that the actors are acting 100% as the person who originally envisioned the story imagined it to be is silly.

Doesn't have to be 100 percent the same thing. The closer to the honest expression of the director's vision one can get, the better. It's just degrees of separation, since it's very rare that, say, a bilingual director fluent in both languages will personally help out with the voices in an English dub, as a random example.

Wait how did the review thread turn into another dubs vs Japanese vo? The game gives you both options. Nobody is missing anything

Exactly why I say he wasn't handled perfectly. I hate that they didn't actually commit to what his sexuality was and how they played it up for humour. Go hard or go home, man.

Of course remembering the earlier comments about how they handle the subject this time, maybe it's dodging a bullet by not having any queer characters in the party.

Metal Gear?

Hint: If your first thought was Snake Eater is the third game, then it's proving the point :p

I still haven't finished Horizon Zero Dawn or Breath of the Wild and I just ordered the Steelebook Version of this game, what the hell is wrong with me?

But reyn time and Dunban swag was always funny to listen to. Usually I would hate that type of acting but was so appealing in xenoblade.

Xenoblade actually might be one of the few games, if not the only game, I prefer dubbed haha. Felt like it had a lot more life in comparison to the Japanese version.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
The Japanese dub could be 1000x better but Ill still play in English because you know what? I dont understand Japanese.

Nothing. Sure, you slacked on finishing Horizon and Breath of the Wild in time for this, but shelving both of them to play the true GOTY 2016? No one is gonna be mad at you for that!

Sorry, I ended up derailing the thread. I was just saying that man, Aoi Yuuki is a big, big draw for some people I know since she is a voice in the game and it ended up spiraling into me bringing up my opinions on dubs.

One of these is not like the others.

Kanji's handling and the retconning, backtracking and handwringing over Naoto annoys me to no end. The very issues they logically could have/should have/ would have bonded over is just now considered "no you're just misunderstanding and inserting your own agenda." Also, Yosuke's constant casual homophobia. Ugh

"Constant casual homophobia" that you can never call him out on.

That's what bugged me the most. I played Yu as being absolutely down with everything. He just wanted people to live their truths, and the fact that I could never call out Yosuke on being a total dick to Kanji always drove me crazy.

Wow. I was expecting P5 to review well, but this is still an incredible score.

Don't know if I'll get it day one since I'm still deep in Mass Effect, but I'm definitely looking forward to playing it, whenever that is

Yeah. Atlus honestly has a lot of progress to make in that area.

Also, I understtod the Metal Gear one. :) The first one's not all that special, but the second one is where you can really see a lot of the quirks that would go more into the MGS series as a whole.

Maya is just the name that that teacher of Persona 3 uses for a fictional MMO.

Zolo is just saying nonsense.

I can't tell if you're serious or not, but if so - Maya is P2: Eternal Punishment's protag.

Or were you trying to make a "3 was the first Persona game" joke

Ah I gotcha

And yea I swore you could change form English to Japanese in the ingame settings. So I don't think you are locked into one for 100 hours

Dodn't your teammates get grossed out at that in Persona Q?

P2 came out in the 90s back when people played games and didn't have to lean on the otaku market. The days of Persona being a subversive series are long gone.

Naoto as gender fluid is a valid reading I think. I was just playing DAN and the fact that they went through the trouble to mention at the very opening of the game that she used to present as masculine but "she's over all that now" is just really irritating. Same with Kanji maybe not being gay, but also not wanting to be this hypermasculine stereotype he was perceived as, going through the whole "true self" bit and then spending the rest of the game and the spin offs as THE SAME ARCHETYPE. Like they just couldn't pull the trigger on actually dealing with inner turmoil that actual teenagers face, but had no problem giving a distressed idol a strip club dungeon and following through on "hey! You can be a ~regular girl~"

Question for people who have played the game

Is the game way more encouraging of constantly swapping who you bring in your party? because i felt in persona 4 golden it was basically 'Pick your team now and stick with them'. Is there anything that encourages or supports you constantly switching up your team? And is it similar to P4 &P3 in that you cant swap your party members once you enter a dungeon?

Yes, inactive party members still earn some EXP, and you can increase this amount. You can swap party members out mid-dungeon, and eventually mid-battle.

You can swap party members at predefined spots in a dungeon.
The ability to swap party members in combat is unlockable.
At higher difficulties, swapping out party members in combat is indispensable as enemy AIs will mercilessly target your weaknesses.

All characters gain experience whether or not they are in your party.

Eh. I suppose so, but it's certainly not what they were going for. "Death of the author" and all that though. If I remember right, there was also a line from Rise right after the dungeon about Naoto's issue not really being so much wanting to be a boy, but about wanting to be respected as a detective. This is also why she tends to get more feminine clothing in timeskips such as the one in P4G.

Hah, I tried playing the first Metal Gear but. Ah, couldn't do it. Anyway, I LIKE THE FIRST DEVIL MAY CRY GAME

It's not just her wanting to be respected, but her discomfort at feeling forced into traditional displays of femininity, body discomfort, and general awkwardness around conversations regarding such. They present it as an issue that seems to run deeper than her being a detective Conan expy with the Kuzunoha name, and then pull back at the last minute when it comes down to actually getting into the meat of her arc and then afterwards proceed to reassure the target audience that THIS IS A GIRL, FEMALE LADY PERSON, FAP AWAY BOYS. Follow through or don't do it. Or at least do some research before throwing issues like that out there only to trivialize them.

Sweet. Really looking forward to changing up the party everytime. Is the EXP dependant on how much the MC gets or is just some random number?

I disagree with that. Death of the author might be a thing, but the game makes it absolutely clear that Naoto does not want to be a man. She simply wants to be accepted in a male dominated society. Naoto dressed and acted like a boy because that was the only way she felt she could gain respect.
