Pokémon Sun & Moon |OT| Ultra Beasts and where to find them

That's cool, to each their own. But you seriously disagree with the disgusting volume of cut scenes?

For me, the only issue is that it's really linear, but still after each plot, you are free to explore the entire island and there are a lot of things you can find

Got my ass handed to me on my initial attempt at Mallow's challenge.
The Lurantis's automatic Solar Blade on the first turn was just horrifying for my Rock, Water, and Ground team.
Ended up having to ditch the challenge, grind my Rockruff and Cubone until they evolved, caught a Fletchling just to use for the totem battle to take hits, and ended up running into a Stufful that called for help like 3 times. I caught one! Her name is Cuddles. :3

Oh, and I BODIED that Lurantis.
My fight, Lurantis never even got to use Solar Blade. I don't remember what she did turn one. It wasn't Solar Blade. Probably because it was 1/4 effective to Dartrix. The rest of the fight, she had to synthesis, as my Dartrix was doing 75% damage every turn with Pluck.

It was actually the sun powered Weather Ball from the helped Castform that gave me the most trouble. That attack did a ton of damage.

I was starting to struggle a little on the second Trial. Not picking a grass starter and there not being many grass/electric choices up to now hurt a lot.

Which island are you on?

I just started diving into the second. I know it was early, I just assumed the first island was tutorial, so was excited for the real adventure on island 2, but it feels so far to be the same thing.

Yeah, I am still early. You have given me hope for tomorrow that this game turns out to change my opinions.

I have been a little prejudice on my opinion, I will cleanse my bias and continue on tomorrow.

The overworld is beautiful and packed with charm and detail. It is quite linear and disconnected, but it's not lacking exploration and the sense of adventure is there. There are next to no annoying caves or surfing routes to be found and progression isn't as rigidly structured as in past games.

And I think the new Pokemon are the most unique and fun batch in ages. So many cool new typings, abilities and moves to play around with. The game is cutscene heavy but I find them entertaining. The first few hours are just really slow, things should pick up soon and the story becomes interesting.

"oh boy a splashing fishing spot, i hope i get any other pokemon than a magikarp"
*draws in Pearl and spot disappears*
i hate this. why would they allow this to happen.

God getting a Delhmise is going to be a nightmare.

Save, fish, reset.

Been using Cheerleader Oricorio for most of the game and I just now saw Flamenco Oricorio. I need that red nectar immediately.

Edit: and it's literally right next to the trainer who I saw it from, oh baby.

If mine had used Synthesis I would have been eaten alive. On the other hand the allies barely did anything.

The trick to Totem fights seems to be to
kill the Totem first because the second ally is almost always worst than the first.

Is anyone else using Komala? That thing is a monster.

I mean its normal STAB is weaker than Bewear and Toucannon's, but Komala is way cuter. I'm actually glad it doesn't evolve. Perfect design.

Saw a sign in the overworld saying you get them from Festival Plaza.

I love how the AI has literally no idea how to handle Komala when it comes to status moves, lol. It's practically game-breaking.

For what it's worth, I'm a decent way into the second island, and it's starting to give me some side areas to check along the routes. The cutscenes have been less frequent too. It's still not exactly as open as I'd like it, but I'm hoping the trend continues into the other islands. The aggressive railroading from Point A to Point B has probably been my biggest complaint with the game so far

As long as they include Team Skull

My favorite part of those encounters is the fact that
you get to troll them by pretending you have no idea who they are.
When I realized that was a recurring dialogue choice through the first few encounters, it genuinely made me laugh.

I'm a little bit past the Ghost trial.

I like the idea of the Totem Pokemon battles, but when you one or two hit them it kind of takes out the thrill of the battle. Would be cool if some trainers would have that buffed effect to them.

Also been deliberately avoiding trainers and running away from wild battles for a while to stay slightly under leveled or about the same level as the Pokemon in the area, but it doesn't feel like it's enough. Taking advantage of type weaknesses and defenses is still pretty strong especially if you have a well balanced spread of types/move types on your team.

Still enjoying the ride through the world, but yeah the difficulty doesn't really feel all that different from past games for me. Ah well.

I'll get my copy on Monday, wonder trade / searchable trade are still a thing so we can get whatever Pokémon we'd like at the beginning, right???

I'm struggling on how to chain SOS calls.

If a pokemon already did an SOS and called a pokemon, should you be beating the pokemon that got called or the original one?

Doesn't matter. After 50 turns maybe make sure you knock out the original because it might start to use Struggle.

Finished the second grand trial. My team is Dartrix, Bewear, Diglett, Araquanid, Pikachu, and Salandit. Some quick updated impressions:

+Island 2 has some nice diversity when it comes to Pokemon. You can fill out the grass/fire/water gap in your team and there are some other types mixed in there as well.
+The island trials a good, but not a huge step above gym leaders.
+Totem Pokemon are really well utilized. Totem Lurantis was one of the hardest battles I've had in a Pokemon game. I can easily see kids getting frustrated since you have to go into the battle with a specific plan if you want to survive.
+The game is actually relatively challenging. I'm sure you can still starter nuke everything if you want, but the Totem Pokemon and SOS summoning can really push you to the limit.
+Z-moves are a nice way to make weaker Pokemon more powerful and genuinely do help out in Totem battles.

+/- Poke Pelago is... a thing. A thing that you do. These daily timer things are murder. I swore in the cave area you could use beans to speed up the process, and I did, but it didn't seem to go any faster. Like Festival Plaza I assume it will have some big payoffs, but you gotta grind up to see it.

-Both islands are really linear. I could understand the first one being linear since it was basically a tutorial area, but this one makes you go in a loop as well. Even if you want to explore, there are arbitrary blocks in place. In XY when you got to Lumiose City, you had a big city to explore and could venture to different routes. Obviously there were eventually obstacles to guide you in the right direction, but you still had more freedom.
-So many trainers have just one or two Pokemon. Hau still has two. TWO.

Doesn't really matter to my knowledge, except in special instances (like Carbink calling in a Sableye, or a baby calling in a Happiny/Chansey - Sableye, Mareanie, Happiny/Chansey etc won't call for help).

Just caught a shiny Magikarp!

It does feel like they've given almost every new mon a cool new ability or signature move, or both this gen. Pretty cool as it makes it much more fun and inviting to use the new mons.
