Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow Eshop Release |OT| This Gym is Great! It’s Full of Women!

Use Explosion

Damn I seriously lucked out with Chansey compared to some of you guys, I think I caught the first one I ran into. Tauros and Scyther were much bigger pains in the ass. The only Safari Zone Pokemon I'm missing now is Pinsir with its godawful 1-4% encounter rate...

Since I played Blue back in the day, I decided to give Yellow a whirl. I was able to get a gengar before brock using the mew glitch. I caught it at lv 3 so I can hav eit level up with my party. I am about to enter Mt. Moon. I am preparing my Buterfree to get to lv 15 for sleep powder so I can catch an abra for the mew glitch in cerulean.

I'm trying to get my girlfriend into playing and she just won't even try. She says the graphics look too bad and there isn't enough variety for her. :( I'm bummed, she loves the DS games and pre ordered Sun...

What should I do to convince her it's worth it? Already told her about glitches, Pokemon bank, etc. she won't even give it a shot :(

Did it go from Level 9 to Level 11? If so, there's a glitch in Gen 1 where if a Pokémon levels up twice and goes over the level it should learn a move, it doesn't learn it.
I wasn't paying attention to the levelling, but I guess that's what happened. I'm thinking of just using him as an HM slave anyway.

The fact the Pokemon doesn't attack at the turn it wakes up is annoying... Also, stuff that heals Statuses seems a lot more useful than in the later games.

Yesterday when fighting Blaine, I had him use a Super Potion on his Rapidash, despite having full health and had just Fire Spin'd me the previous turn...

I don't think I've ever had that happen before!

Is it bad that Charmeleon is my HM slave? I only need him to evolve so I can teach him Fly. He really is useless without Slash/Flamethrower...

Nothing. Let it go. If she doesn't care or want to play it, move on and don't fixate on it or try to force her.

I taught mine Cut.

But once I taught it Mega Punch, it can hold its own now until it gets Flamethrower.

At 33,
Ember
Mega Punch
Cut
Slash

He's starting to be somewhat useful, although I doubt he'll ever have the utility that my Persian has. Free money, Bubblebeam and Bit hax. And then later on, Slash max crits with STAB.

Break up with her.

My Charizard has been pretty much useless outside of Erika's gym, Ember has no power whatsoever and even his critical hits don't OHKO most Pokemon. Was he always this bad, or is Flamethrower just his saving grace?

You don't, she's clearly not interested and honestly speaking the game is only worth playing if you have nostalgia attachment to overcome the old age of the game.

Charizard just needs some TLC in-order to be useful as his movepool is really bad.

My advice is to teach him Dig and Submission (replace it for Fly in Yellow). Teach him mega punch till he learns slash and keep ember till he learns Flamethrower.

Is it ever explained why the Elite 4 setup in this is "odd"?

In every game since Gen1, the final stretch is the Elite 4 then the Champion.

In Gen1, you fight the Elite 4 then Blue, who is only just the new Champion, right? But he just beat Lance, who was the previous Champion, which means Lance wasn't part of the Elite 4?

Or did Lance get relegated down into the E4 after his defeat as Champion, and an unknown member of the E4 got kicked out?
Lance was the previous champion? It's been too long. I like the idea of a member being kicked out but given how according to the gym statues you and the rival are the only people to beat the gyms I wonder if there was no champion.

Still seems a bit much that only the champion can lose their place while the rest of the elite 4 are fine. I'd kick Bruno out as what kind of fighting specialist takes two Onix (who at that point of the game is a complete joke) and zero Primeape (or even Poliwrath) not to mention Hitmonchan which usually whiffs for about 15 damage doing a super effective punch. Even in Gen II he only replaced one of the Onix with a Hitmontop :(

my interpretation of the gym statues is that Red isn't gonna read out loud all of the random names that have defeated the gym leaders, instead he's only interested or only notices Blue. And after you beat it you read both as an accomplishment.

Doesn't make sense that nobody ever has beaten a gym leader

I almost lost all my Pokemon at the Mt. Moon. Either I play it way too risky or the game is a bit harder than I thought. I had only Charmeleon after a point that I managed to sustain using Potions.

I actually think they play pretty speedily; faster than modern gens, which drag for me. Anyway, I believe Shizuka was able to beat one of the games in around ~22 hours, and it seemed like he/she was running through the game (based on posts). I'm at about 14 hours in Fuchsia City.

I did everything I could do, as in talking to every NPC, battling every trainer and catching all legendaries, Mew included.

I'm getting close to 40 hours and I'm in front of the League, but I've been... sidetracked. 119/151 at or around level 50. I've been duping Rare Candies, PP Ups, Vitamins, and the most important TMs (thanks, PC limit) for about 2 days now.
They better let me transfer these Pokemon up. I'd understand Mew not going through due to the OT but I mean, I've done all of this years ago legit. It'd be annoying to have to painstakingly level up my team at the E4 for the next 6 months again.

Btw for supernerds like me, these are the max Pokedex entries you can get without trading/cheating

Red/Blue: 124 (11 version exclusives, 4 trade evos, two starters, two Eeveelutions, a Hitmon and a fossil Pokemon)
Yellow: 129 (13 version exclusives, 3 trade evos, two Eeveelutions, Hitmon and fossil)

For Yellow, you can get 17 more from another version and the remaining 4 from the other one - Electabuzz or Magmar, Ekans or Meowth lines, and the third Eeveelution.

Huh. I forgot Wrap had no effect on ghosts, but when I continued Wrap, it did the damage animation and sound effect but no damage. And when I tried another attack it did nothing. No text, nothing. Fascinating.

Finished off Koga. His Pokemon were (at a minimum) at least 11 levels higher than mine. @.@ Current team:

Nidoking (lv. 33)
Haunter (lv. 31)
Pikachu (lv. 32)
Dugtrio (lv. 32)
Dodrio (lv. 33)
Vaporeon (lv. 33)

Just baaarely won with Vaporeon's Surf. It and Koga's Venemoth had maxed out Double Team usage, and Koga managed to land Toxic. D:

Today happened the first casualty in my journey, Smart the Kadabra was hit by a critical Leech Life by Koga's overleveled Venomoth because I thought he was going to outspeed that bug but instead he got murdered. Thankfully, the Snorlax that I caught today avenged his friend by two-shotting that foul beast and ending Koga's reign of terror.

In his memory I'm teaching Food Truck (Snorlax) Psychic as the move to abuse Amnesia. The replacement will be the dojo's Hitmonlee, let's see how good it is.

Current team:
DPV the Sandslash (lv. 38)
Battleship the Wartortle (lv. 34)
D-Decker the Dodrio (lv. 35)
Food Truck the Snorlax (lv. 35)
Tesla X the Pikachu (lv. 37)
ATSTWalker the Hitmonlee (lv. 30)

Cementery:
Smart the Kadabra (lv 39)

Wander around through 10 floors, battling trainers who 90% of them can poison you, the other 10% can take 50% of your HP off if you don't OHKO them due to Selfdestruct. Piles of items to fill up your bag, some of which is junk like X-Accuracy, but there's like 3 TMs, so you need room. And then there's the warp panels.

It took me an hour and some change to beat it, and I had to go to the center to heal and drop off items several times.

Oh, huh, the bed you sleep in to heal was added in the remakes?

Marathon'd through Rock tunnel, Erika's gym and the Team Rocket Hideout.
In the process I got my Primeape and Hypno which evolved earlier than I recalled, neat.

Need to start narrowing down my final team at this point because the bounty of the Safari Zone draws ever closer (like the moment I get the pokeflute it's straight down cycling road ignoring as many trainers as possible, I love the relative freedom at this stage in the game).

It's possible to go down cycling road without hitting a single trainer, but it can be a bit tricky if you don't know the path.

No, but it's about 90% through the dungeon before you reach it. There's like four trainers between you and Giovanni at that point (one of which being Blue).

Speaking of which, nice job helping me fight against the evil Pokemon mafia Blue. You were such a huge help. I really appreciate that you decided to walk all the way through the building and its traps, MGS style, just to battle me and then leave.

The implication is SUPPOSED to be that Blue was trapped in Silph Co along with its employees when the Rockets began their takeover of the company. You rescue him, but not wanting to show weakness, he straight up battles you out of spite.
The guy with the Lapras watches your battle with Blue, and determines that you show true compassion toward your pokemon, and thus decides to give his pokemon to you.

Do you think Pokémon Bank will allow you to trade between the 3 versions besides Sun/Moon?

BTW that's so awesome, I can have my 2nd favorite generation available when Sun/Moon launches. favorite gen is III

Now I remember why I wasn't a fan of exp share even if it sounds good not letting the resident electric pokemon hoard all the exp in the water routes.

And that's game set and match.

Approx. 20 hours 30 minutes and I'm through.

My final team, in order of acquisition:

Code:
Nikolai/Venusaur - L:45 [Body Slam / Toxic / Leech Seed / Razor Leaf]
--
Bit/Fearow - L:44 [Drill Peck / Fly / Leer / Fury Attack]
--
Arino/Sandslash - L:46 [Rock Slide / Strength / Earthquake / Slash]
--
Zero/Ninetales - L:45 [Flamethrower / Fire Blast / Quick Attack / Confuse Ray]
--
Amp/Jolteon - L:48 [Thunderbolt / Agility / Double Kick / Thunder Wave]
--
Ceres/Starmie - L:45 [Surf / Psychic / Blizzard / Recover]

Level 47 Jolteon outspeeds Level 65 Charizard with a critical Thunderbolt.

It's kind of funny going into the E4 waaaay underleveled and winning because the AI is garbage. Lance's Dragonite would only use Agility and Barrier against Venusaur because Psychic beats Poison.

It's really, really rough going back to Gen 1, where the most useful grass-type attack is Razor Leaf, and Golbat's highest-powered move is Bite, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a good time. It was a fun trip, but I think I'll be leaving the past in the past from now on.

(Unless G/S/C launch on VC because I am bad with money oh man.)

Not really all you need to is get the key card and take the lift to the 9th floor or use the key card to open the door on the third floor and take the warp title to the 9th floor.

Hmm not really, Blue was just there getting his final gym badge as he heads off to the elite 4 after you defeat him.

The only different is that Blue doesn't lift a finger to help anyone but himself whereas we defeated the Rocket goons and Giovanni.

If you take Origins to be the Red/Green canon, Blue just didn't care about the Silph Co. invasion and didn't bother with TR. he probably just heard there was some commotion going on and wanted to check it out without getting too involved.

Thinking he was kidnapped as well is kind of like the "Raticate is dead and he's at the tower to mourn" theory. Interesting and I can definitely see where it comes from, but I don't think the developers were thinking that hard.

Yeah Koga (and all of the back half gym leaders really) are super buffed in Yellow. At least with Koga the three Venonat are pretty easy to take out, but Venomoth is tough.

He and Sabrina having their signature mons from the show is pretty cool. Same with Surge's Raichu and Giovanni's Persian.

You don't get to complain when you have Starmie on your team.

I don't see how this is implied at all. Knowing Blue's personality it makes sense that he'd break in through the Rocket scrubs for the sole purpose of fucking with you.
